50.0. "Dire Straits" by SUBURB::DALLISON (Tony Dallison @RDL 1E x:7899-5009) Tue Apr 26 1988 17:00

Any of you peeps out there Dire Straits fans???

    Anybody got a complete dicography???

I think that Making movies and Love over Gold are about their best
albums, that I've got anyway. Although "Brothers in Arms" had some
good tracks on it, like the title track and "the mans too strong",
I wasn't too impressed with the overall sound - too repetitive.

Anyone out there know what They're doing now, I daresay Mark "Nobbly"
will be doing the Princes trust (BTW - so is Bruce Springsteen),
but do you know of any more albums to be released or tour plans?

    Thoughts peeps..

    Have a good one,
    -Tony Dallison-

You don't know what you're missing on Alchemy. Two Young Lovers
is an excellent track which isn't available on any of the studio
    albums ( I think ).

Dire Straits are, for me, one of the few bands that sound as good
live as they do in the studio.

I saw them in Belfast many moons ago just after The Sultans of Swing
had been released and thoroughly enjoyed their excellent performance.
Some of us weren't fortunate enough to see them at Wembley. :-(

    Andy.

Agree with .2 Two Young Lovers is fantastic, they should
get a sax in more often, great sound, and the live
version of Sultans of Swing is MILES better than the studio
    	one.

Apart from Alchemy, I like Making Movies best, dunno why.

My top three Dire Straits albums in order of preference are
1...Dire Straits (1st album) one of the Classics of the latter
    	'70s
2...Brothers in Arms, not a 'dud' tune on it.
3...Communique(sp?), not a bad follow-up to the 'superb' debut.
Which is something most bands can't manage !!!.

One of the BEST bands I've seen live.

I thought I heard that that MK had decided not to be part of DS
any more. i guess that would mean the end of DS as we know it !!

    Anyone confirm this ???

MK has for a while wanted to do some stuff on his own.

P.S. He guested on the last two EC tours and that is some awesome
music. I manged to get to the Albert hall gig last year but one

There was an interview with Knopfler in an edition of Q magazine
towards the end of last year, in which he was quoted as saying "there
may not be another Dire Straits album", so certainly it seems that
if he did leave, the band would cease to be a going concern. Whether
he has decided to reinforce this decision of late, I don't know.

Basic problem is (same for many other *name* bands) is ...

What to do next that's not the same as they've already done. I
reckon that Dire Straits have reached this. U2 may get here in
    a couple of albums time.

I think this is one of the reasons why Dire Straits may not do another
album. Knopfler could do a rock 'n' roll album but I don't think
they're really cut out for this on record.

    David.

Rumours about Dire Straits splitting up seem to get spread around quite
frequently. At the moment (according to their information service) there
are no such plans to dissolve the group, although some of the band are
considering doing their own solo albums. MK put out the Princess Bride
soundtrack in January and I think John Illsley is considering a 2nd
album. The group are headlining the wembley show on June 11th as well.

Dire Straits record company will be releasing a Dire Straits compilation
album on October 25th, entitled 'Money for Nothing'
The following tracks will be featured:
Sultans of Swing
Down to the waterline
Portobello Bello (Live version, Paris 1983)
Twisting by the pool
Romeo and Juliet
Where do you think you're going
Walk of life
Private investigations
Money for nothing
Tunnel of love
Brothers in Arms

The Cassette and Compact Disc versions will also include Telegraph road.

The bands contract states that the record co will only produce one
'Greatest hits' type album during the term of the contract and they've
chosen this time to do it cause there's no other DS products out just
now for it to clash with. This is not an indication that the group
are about to split up, although there are no gigs planned in the next
few months. There May be another DS concert at the end of the year
though, will find out more nearer the time.

Knopfler has stated that he will only devote 3 months of each year
to the band, as he wants to concentrate on his family.

Live, people will always want to see them ...

On record, the only progression I can see them making is a real
rocker .... that last album was quite mellow.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we don't see any more new material
    from them.

Update on Dire Straits:
Mark Knopfler and Alan Clark are both in Japan just now, touring with
Eric Claptons band. Once that is over, Mark will be spending a few weeks
in New York before he starts work on the next (soundtrack) album.

It will be entitled 'Last exit to Brooklyn' (based on the book of the same
name by Hubert Selby Jr, published by Paladin books). The soundtrack will
probably have been recorded by the end of February, and the release date
is scheduled for Autumn 1989.

The latest album MK produced, is Randy Newman's 'Land of dreams'. Randy
will be on 'Wogan; on November 21st, promoting the album and Mark, Guy and
Brendan (from the Straits) will be in the band for the show.

There are no Dire Straits concerts lined up for the forseeable future.

The Dire Straits information service is being temporarily suspended. This
is because there is nothing planned for the group in the forseeable
future. The group is *not* splitting up, but it is unlikely there will
be a new album until Autumn 1990, and any concerts will be charity gigs.
MK is probably going to put out his own album in addition to the 'last
exit to Brooklyn' album. He's playing on Radio 1 tomorrow (Mon) night at
8pm.

Dire Straits have now temporarily reformed as a blues/rockabilly band
known as the Notting Hillbillies.

They are about to go on a UK tour of small venues and will be playing the
Reading Hexagon on Wed, 4 April.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on 20-Jan-90

An album by the Hillbillies called 'Missing...presumed having a good time'
will come out in the UK around 19-Feb, in the US and Canada on 27-Feb
and other countries at the end of Feb.

Mark Knofler will also be playing at Eric Claptons concerts on
26,27,28,30,31 Jan and 1 Feb.

Please do not contact me to get you tickets!!!

I presume not many people know about the concerts yet, except those on
the mailing list. Try calling the Hexagon and see what they say about
tickets. Remember, not many people will know who the Notting Hillbillies
are, so ticket demand may not be as great as if it was billed as Dire
Straits. I have full tour details and more info in my cube at REO2-G/H9

    Notting Hillbillies are:

Mark Knopfler & Guy Fletcher (the decent keyboard player) from DS

Brendan Croker & Steve Phillips, both brilliant blues guitarists from
Leeds, and buddies of Mr Knopfler (check out their albums)

a pedal steel player from the US

The plan was to do a Hank Williams-style tour, in one van, of all small
    venues.

This is not, as far as I know, anything like a DS revival.

Straits stuff was played, namely Water of Love and Setting Me Up (both

Dire Straits are likely to start recording their new album in the autumn

Well it looks like they are going to be bigger and better this time
round, if that is possible. And as I did'nt get a chance to see them
last time round, i.e Live in 85 - and a bit in 86, I am waiting with
baited breath for their first few England concerts.
I am going to see them in Sheffield and Wembly. I shall expect a
few reviews of N.E.C and Glasgow - please. I believe they have a whole
new set of merchandise - pretty obvious really, venues and the road
crew have got to be paid for after all.
I saw them, or at least I saw inch high figures way off in the
distance, at Knebworth. Lets hope they keep up the tradition of special
guests appearing unannounced like Mr Clapton himself or Phil maybee.

I'm slightly disappointed too, but certainly not enough to sell it (BTW Craig,
Woolies are selling it for 9.99, I presume the extra 1p covers your charges for
verifying the CD is flawless ;^)

There are 3 tracks which I really enjoyed (of which 'Calling Elvis' is one)
but some of the others are growing on me.

There are many sounds reminiscent of Notting Hill Billies (the C & W that Craig
referred to) but I prefer it when they let rip a little more. Give me Sultans'
or 'Money for Nothing' any day!

However, its off to Wembley next week and I expect it to be all that much better
in the flesh....

I like 'The Bug' which I hope they play at Wembly. They played four
tracks from 'On Every Street' at Sheffield. Calling Elvis, On Every
Street, Heavy Fuel, and Planet of New Orleons. Now that people have had
a chance to hear the rest they may play a few more.
A friend of mine wrote to the info service to ask Dire Straits to
play Telegraph Road at Sheffield on the 20th Aug for Jaynor. We didnt
expect them to because of the infinite number of chords etc and only a
finite rehersal time for nine people to perfect 17 or so tracks out of
which they pick obout 12 for each concert. Anyway you can imagine
Jaynor's face when they started playing Telegraph Road.
Chris White, who joined for them for Brothers in Arms, plays a
number of excelent saxaphone solos, including one in Privates
Investigated ( slight twist ) and makes Planet of New Orleons sound
    like a classic.
I was able to get some close up photos at Sheffield right at the
front. The security may be different at Wembly, I am sure they will
allow cameras in, but they may not allow people to rush the stage.
All I can say is if anybody reading this is going on Friday 20th, once
they play Walk of Life ( likely to be the second track as it was at
Sheffield ) PLEASE just get up and scramble as fast as possible to the
front. If enough people do it who can stop us ?
Apart from a slight hitch when Marks radio transmitter battery on
one of his guitars ran low on juice, the concert was worth the wait.
Romeo and Juliet sounds fabulous with the new sax bit.
