25.0. "UK Copyrighting" by MUNSBE::BOSLEY () Wed Mar 30 1988 16:24

    I have just discovered this conference after thinking there should
    be one for some time.

    My question to the US conference was concerning copyright infromation
    for the songs I have written. Although all of the replies were very
    valuable the process for copyright was obviously based in the US.

    Does anyone have any knowledge about copyright in Britain, should
    I indeed copyright in both countires ?

    Regards,

    Mark.

25.1A Copyright for each country ?MUNSBE::BOSLEYThu Mar 31 1988 12:378
    One of the replies I have just received from the States suggests
    that copyright must be on a country to country basis. So if I plan
    on going to the US, German or any other country I must obtain individual
    copyright etc.

    Any comments ?

	So far as I know if you write an original piece of music,
	then you automatically have copyright on it - simply write
	(c) 1988 <your name> on any music/tapes etc.

	The only problem would be if someone ripped off your song
	and you had to prove that you actually wrote it - and that you
	wrote it first! So you need evidence of when it was written.

	To do this you can write the music and lyric down on
	paper and deposit it with a bank. Or you can post it to
	yourself (the postmark becomes proof of when it was sent)
	and then keep it safe (the envelope has to remain sealed
	of course!).

    25.2 is totally correct...you must have datestamped proof of when
    the song was written...the two methods in .2 are good examples

    If you post it, send it recorded delivery to yourself and then the
    GPO also has a record of the date sent etc (recommended by the
    Songwriters Guild of GB)
