23.0. "John Cougar Mellancamp -- Tell me more ." by AYOU11::S_GOUDIE (Is your gorgonzola good ?) Tue Mar 29 1988 13:22

For a number of years I had deliberately avoided this guy, I know
it's sounds narrow minded ,but I felt Springsteen was as far into
this style of American Rock that I wanted to travel. But over the
last year I had started to hear some mutterings from people round
about me as to how good this stuff was so I eagerly accepted
a tape of 'The Lonesome Jubilee" from my brother ....

    and ...

Yes it was real good. I liked it a hell of a lot ,in fact
dare I say it ...... better than Brucie ?

Well , I know a lot of you in here are into this guy so
how about some recommendations on what to listen to next .

I'll second the recommendation for "The Lonesome Jubilee", in
fact I can't think of a better album I bought in '87. Got it
on the strength of the first single "Like Paper in Fire" and
wasn't disappointed. It's nice to hear such good songs as
"Down and Out, here in Paradise" which also have a 'message'.

I too would like tips on some of his earlier stuff.

    	Doug.

23.2"Little ditty 'bout Jack & Diane..."JUNIOR::CHILTONSue Chilton, IN-DEC FSTue Mar 29 1988 17:4416

I have 2 others of his, "Uh-huh" and "American Fool", which are
great. He is more "down-to-earth"/regular guy than Bruce. He
hails from Indiana farm country where he still lives and does a
lot to promote the plight of the farmers.

His concerts are more like parties with a sense of everybody
getting involved, instead of him performing for us, if that makes
sense at all. I've seen him three times in four and a half years,
I like him that much. Some of his songs that I like particularly
are "Jack & Diane", "Hurts so Good", and "Pink Houses".

    I'd recommend him to anyone.

Sue (who has her amp back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and stayed up late
    listening to stuff)

    I know I know ( hangs his head in shame ) . I suppose I must be
    mellowing with old age .

Now if only everyone would make an effort to listen to something
they thought they wouldn't like ..... then it would be agreed
that the Smiths were the greatest band of this decade. Yeah !!

Oh , Back to the base note .'The Lonesome Jubilee' is a fine fine
piece of driving music. It just seems to speed-up at all the right
points in the road, and its got great dashboard slapping ,hollering
    along and shades-on-and-arm-out-the-window pieces.

I like that!. Now, if you like this so much, try to get hold of
the older albums that I mentioned previously. I like them much
    better than "Lonesome Jubilee".

For me 'Scarecrow' is the best of all his albums although 'Jubilee'
does come close. I also have a strong liking for 'The Authority
    	Song'.
incidentally, when I first bought 'Scarecrow' I was playing
a tape of it in the car on the way to a gig, a comment from
one of my mates was 'Hey this is great, its like the thinking
    	mans Bruce Springsteen..' !!!
couldn't have put it better myself.

Hmmm. Over here in the States, this was a B-side of a single about 3-4
years ago. Did it just come out there?

> It's great!

Yes, it is! (And yes, it was originally The Drifters)

    Alan, I'm in the US!

I've seen JCM four times and never heard him do the song until this
past June at Great Woods. I thought it may be his new single because
I heard it on the radio for the first time last week, and twice since
    then.

It's the flip side of the "ROCK IN THE U.S.A." single.

and I like it too. I've come to appreciate JCM a lot more
    as we both get older.

I don't know if he's ever toured in the UK...anyone know?

I've seen him five times, most recently 6/19 at Great Woods,
and he's fantastic. Gets everybody up and moving, his concerts
are like a big party, with each song better that the previous.

You get the feeling that he's *genuinely* enjoying himself. I
    will *never* tire of him.

JCM played the Hamersmith Odeon this February. It was the best concert
I've seen in years. The whole place was up and rockin'. He did some
great covers in the set to.

Can someone put out a list of his albums? I have only recently
started listening to his stuff, and have become a partial fan. If
I can hear more, I may become a total fan.

his first two albums that were total stiffs years ago)

Nothin' Matters, And What If It Did
American Fool
Uh-Huh

Lonesome Jubliee

That's pretty much off the top of my head, so I may have missed an early
one. Also, I don't know if all of these were released in the UK (although
I imagine they were).
