560.0. "Basic ISDN Questions" by NOTED::16.67.96.117::dfaust (Dennis Faust) Thu Jan 30 1997 21:59

I got a call from a customer who wants to set up a routed network over ISDN.
Since I don't know anything about ISDN, I figured that I'd come here to ask
some questions (and hopefully get some answers).

1. The customer needs to download a 10 meg file every morning over this link
and he needs this file to download in 5 min or less. Will he be able to
accomplish this using an ISDN line, or do I need more bandwidth. He plans to
use a RouteAbout Access EI for his connectivity. He will also need to do some
LAT over the link, so he'll need to enable bridging on the link, as well.

2. I've heard about binding two 64K lines together to make one 128K line....
Do we support this into the RouteAbout products, and how does that get done,
does it require a special NTI, etc.

3. Are there typical telephone line rates associated with ISDN?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Take out your pocket calculator. Let's assume (for a best case) your
customer is talking about 10,000,000 bytes, not 10MB. A 64kb ISDN line
could get you 8000 bytes/sec assuming no overhead, so to get that
amount over the line would take almost 21 minutes (and in practice
    some more).

ISDN generally has to B channels, bundling them is more a question of
software. I don't know the products you mention, so can't say much
    more.

Certainly. If you'd tell us which country you're in, maybe someone can
    give specifics.

10 MB in 5 minutes is a stretch...but the EI might just be able to do
it, with compression and Multilink. It will depend on how compressible
the file is. If it is already ZIP'd or otherwise compressed, it will
probably not be possible. If it's nice compressible data, it could
make it in less than 5 minutes.

Of course, if there is other data (like LAT) you will be sharing the
bandwidth and it might not fit anyways.

The RouteAbout EI supports multilink PPP (combining the two B channels
for 128 Kpbs effective) and compression. An NT1 is required in North
America; it is usually supplied by the PTT elsewhere.

Line charges vary widely. Typically, though, you will be charged per
minute even if analog voice is flat rate.

You should probably direct any further questions to
IROCZ::COMMON_BROUTERS, where the RouteAbout types hang out.
