854.0. "Phase IV / IV+ differences, background etc ?" by CHEFS::BARKER_E (Ummm...) Tue Feb 11 1997 13:13

    Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong notesfile ...

What is the difference between Phase IV and Phase IV+ ? We have a
number of Cisco routers and DECbrouters that see each other as either
Phase IV adjacencies or Phase IV+ adjacencies. We are having problems
that appear like comunications between Phase IV and IV+ routers isn't
working properly across our config. but it would be nice to know what
the differences are, where there are specs available etc.

Any info would be gratefully received,

    	Thanks, Euan Barker

Phase IV+ is only used on Token Ring. Phase IV Plus does not require
the system the change it's hardware address to aa-00-04-00-..-..

look at http://www-esn.lkg.dec.com/netarch/approved/trn_dlspec_v100.ps

I thought that was Phase IV Prime, or are they one and the same ? This
network has no Token Ring but the Cisco Routers/DECbrouters show
themselves in some cases as Phase IV and in some cases as Phase IV+,

    Thanks,

Oops. You're right. That'll teach me to note early in the morning.

Phase IV+ add a separate L2 multicast for routers and a few other
things. I don't Phase IV+ matters unless you are an area router.
