| I don't know of any. I went through the same options that you did.
If you can afford it, I can recommend AltaVista Mail as a very fine
product. It works extremely well. Its only drawback is that there
is no in-house site license for it; you actually have to purchase it
with real money.

4555.3 | How about Netscape fixing their kit ? | nova05.vbo.dec.com::BERGER | | Thu Mar 20 1997 07:03 | 8 |
| I have the same problems. The problem with Netscape mail is the
well-known InstallShield bug with NT4.0/Alpha I believe. How about
Netscape producing a kit with the fixed InstallShield ? They've done
it for Navigator haven't they ?
Anybody from IBG care to comment ?

I could probably fix that. However, since I don't know if they have
tested it on NT 4.0 I don't care to take the risk.

See above.

Thanks all for the replies... for the moment I think
that I will play the trial version "game" until I can
get approval to buy AV-mail or wait until Netscape puts
out a patch (wont hold my breath :) ).

I'm using AV Mail. It cost my cost center something like
$12. GREAT product for that money.

| Where did you get a $12 price for AV Mail? I thought we had to
purchase it at the regular customer price, which is around $800.

Standard Cost
QB-505AA-SB V2.0 AltaVista Mail Server $12.39
Windows NT
LIC/CDRM
That did it for me.

In my case I filled out an online order form and sent it to my
manager for approval. Your group probably has some purchasing
process you must follow to spend $12.39.

After a bit of digging I have found a server called Post.Office
from software.com (www.software.com).... they have a 10 user
version that one can download for free...
They have Intel and Alpha natives, runs on Nt4.0 and 3.51.
For some one like me whom only needed the one user for local
e-mail this seems to be a good solution... I will run it for
a while and see what comes of it...
As for the AV-mail ... when I looked up the kit price it was
in the multiple hundreds range... and I could not find any
reference to the ~$12 price.
thanks to all those whom feb back input to my original post.

| RE: .12
The multi-hundreds price for AV Mail is the external price. Apparently IEG or
somebody has arranged for internal distribution at media costs. Our department
secretary was able to order at the $12 price using that Q number through the
usual internal ordering channels. The kit duly arrived yesterday.

So why don't we get one kit of each AV product, put it on the network, and have
no media costs?

You mean, use the Digital Intranet?

Because the AltaVista group still wants to count the number of
units it ships and would prefer many (no-profit) sales to
Digital to a single sale.
I know of one business unit which negotiated its own deal
for tunnel licenses. Right now, that's a more likely
option than finding someone to pay for a license for the
whole corporation.

Continuing to be obvious, isn't that the point of Danny's IBG server: to count
how many kits get downloaded for licensing purposes? If Netscape are happy with
it, why can't AltVista be happy with it?
