I've been trying to kid myself that there might be possibilities for
the combination of VRML and Web-enabling applications - dynamically
generating VRML worlds that represent application data (I know that
Oracle have done stuff in that area).
In any case, in order to learn VRML, and just to prove that all Digital
offices look just the same I created a VRML world representing my work
area in the Morgines II building in Geneva. Try skipping from one view
to another. If you want to see what I look like upside down, click on
the box on top of my desk ...

All created by hand ... I figure that if you want to really understand
something then you have got to do things the hard way. Once.

| Rather than trying to navigate in the 3D world, try switching views,
genenerally done by right-clicking, and going to a "view" menu -
you start off in the "bird" view, which is hovering just outside one of
the windows - try switching to the "damian" view.
You will need the appropriate plugin, for Netscape Navigator, I
quite like the Live3D UI:
ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/live3d/windows/3dns322d.exe
Otherwise there is the Cosmo player from SGI:
http://vrml.sgi.com/cosmoplayer/
In principal it would be possible to take the mailstop information for
each person in my building, look it up in Elf, and dynamically create a
VRML world showing where each person sat, including their photo and
home page. Time is all it would take - it could almost all be done
automatically.
The other thing to do would be to extend the 'office' metaphore into
3D, so that you click on the calendar on the wall in the office, and it
shows you the person's schedule, the 'phone takes you to their elf
entry, etc.
Anyone looking for a midnight project?

| Damian,
You got me into this, perhaps you or someone else could help me out...
When I try to install 3DNS322D.EXE, after it starts copying files, I
get the message "Read Only File Detected" for:
c:\winnt\system32\msvcrt.dll
If I tell it to replace the file, I get a "General Transfer Error (-4)"
and the install procedure dies.
If I tell it to skip replacing the file, the copy goes to 90%, then I
get a "Successful Installation" message.
However, when I bring up Netscape and click on your page, it loads for
a few moments, then gives me an "Application Error" and Netscape dies,
without ever displaying anything. This is on NT 4.0, with the latest
service pack.
Any clues?

Not tried it yet, but there is a new version out today:
