763.0. "Exchange 5.0 supports Digital Cluster/Wolfpack?" by ZPOVC::MONTYWONG () Tue Apr 22 1997 21:19

    Hi,

This is an old question but still, a lot of customers are asking:
Will MS Exchange 5.0 support Digital Cluster and/or Wolfpack?

    Please advice.

Wolfpack will support Exchange failover. Exchange running on one node
    at a time.

Digital Clusters will not support Exchange failover.

Any reason ? Technical or Marketing ? Could you reveal a little more
    information why it won't work.

Technical. Need engineering bodies that we don't have. Most engineers
here are now working on Wolfpack value-added software, not Digital
    Clusters.

Some engineering work would have to be done in order to make Exchange
    failover work on Digital Clusters.

Gee , and I thought Digital clusters would always be wolfpack plus more .
Guess you cann't always believe everthing you hear.

According to this entry...

Wolfpack supports Exchange Failover but DIGITAL NT cluster doesn't

According to Microsoft (at the wiz conf) Wolfpack will support only one instance of
SQL in the cluster but DIGITAL NT V1.1 supports more than one SQL instances in
the cluster (one on each node)

So, if I'm a customer that wants to implement SQL on my Excahnge server and I
want my server to benefit from *ALL* of the cluster advantages... what should I do?

P.S.: If we start that game that we cut functionality from wolfpack in DIGITAL NT
Cluster... all of our presentation material up to now needs to be scapped and the
message from marketing re thinked.

re .5. Maybe you misunderstood me.

The "Digital Clusters for Windows NT" product will not support Exchange
failover. All future NT cluster solutions from Digital will be based
on Wolfpack, so of course you will get Exchange failover from Digital.

For SQL failover, basic Wolfpack functionality will allow a SINGLE
instance of SQL to run in your cluster, and will allow failover of that
    single instance.

Digital plans an add-on "Wolfpack Plus" package that will provide the
dual-SQL server failover on Wolfpack, just like you have on "Digital
    Clusters for Windows NT" today.

Where can I find more information on this "Wolfpack Plus" and it's features?
I can tell you that from what I've heard that people outside of Digital think
Clusters will just "go away" once Wolfpack is released. I've known about
"Wolfpack Plus" since last fall, but I still have no idea what features it
will provide. I think we need to do a better job of advertising.
