627.0. "Digital Cluster & Lotus Domino " by NEOV00::KLOPEZ (Ay Caramba!) Mon Feb 17 1997 16:20

    Hello,

    Our customer is working with Digital Cluster for Windows NT with SQL
    Server on one node and Lotus Notes on the second. They would like to add a
    third server and build a cluster with Domino's cluster. Do you think
    this sounds reasonable?

    Digital Cluster for Windows NT
    ...........................................................
                                                              .
    AlphaServer 1000A                  AlphaServer 1000A      . Domino's
    SQL Server ---- ----- Lotus Domino . Cluster
    Server A               !   !       Server B               .   <----
                           !   !             !                .        !
                           RA310             !                .        !
    ...........................................................        !
                                             !                         !
                                             !                         !
                                       AlphaServer 1000A          <----
                                       Lotus Domino
                                       Server C

    In this way they would provide Failover to SQL Server and use the load
    balancing features of the Domino's cluster.

    It seems clear what would happen if Server A or C fail, but what kind
    of failover would take place if Server B fail, Since all the services
    would failover to Server A, would Domino's (Server C) know that he can now
    failover to Server A instead of B? very confusing ...

    I would appreciate your help. We are trying to determine if we need to
    sell two servers instead of one (of course we NEED to sell two!), but we
    need the technical reason of why ....

627.1might work ...HYDRA::EGGIMANNTue Feb 18 1997 15:5918
Hi,

I'm assuming you're using Lotus clustering when you refer to the Domino
cluster on node A,C, and Windows NT clusters on node A,B.

When node b fails, you'll need to startup a notes server process on node
A and associate the floating ip address to this server process. (take a
look at the Notes partitioned servers in advanced services on Domino)
You'll also need to give it the same server name as the process running
on node B. This should fool the clients into automatically connecting back
into node A. This should also fool the Domino server on Node C into thinking
its still talking and replicating update events to Node B.

Interesting approach. Testing interoperability of Notes clusters (for load
balancing) with WNT clusters was next on our list ... Let me know how this
works out.

627.2Which would failover first?NEOV00::KLOPEZAy Caramba!Wed Feb 19 1997 14:3718
    If both cluster products were installed, which "failover" would take place
    first?

    The main advantage of the Digital Cluster is the shared disk, but then
    you loose the load balancing, although we could balance manually with
    two diferent databases.

    Can failover be "turned off" for Lotus Domino and just leave the load
    balancing capability?

    BTW, we are going for two different servers (AlphaServer 4100), we now
    need to find out what is more importante for our customer (load
    balancing vs cost)

The wnt cluster failover would happen first. The Domino failover would not
happen until the ip address and domino server advertised itself on the
surviving wnt cluster node.
