615.0. "RA310 firmware upgrade problems" by ADOV01::JARMAN () Wed Feb 12 1997 05:21

I'm trying to upgrade the firmware on a RA310 from V27Z-0 to V30Z so I
can use it in a cluster

I got the files V30Z.IMG and V30Z-2.IMG from

CSC32::ISG$COMMON:[HSZ40] as pointed to by note 6.6 in this conf

using the VMS copy command. I then FTP'd them (using binary) to my NT4
    Alpha.

Using KEATERM I logged onto the HSZ20, ran clcp and used the inbuilt
Kermit to write the files over the serial link. in both cases the file
transfer seemed ok, but it then aborted with
'EDC check failed on downloaded file'

Does this mean the files on CSC32 are have probs or did I do something
    stupendously stupid?

    thanks for any thoughts

615.1My fault - sort of...ADOV01::JARMANFri Feb 14 1997 11:1422
Sigh - why do simple things have to be so hard?

I didn't use the RA310 GUI software on my NT host because it refgused
to communicate with the RA10 at all. (I subsequently found something on
the storage WWW server which points out that this sw only runs on 3.51
    of NT

After trying another machine , and using a standard copy of Kermit I
gave up tryingto use a terminal emulator on the serial port - it
continued to give the same error after the 28 min download

So I'vo downgraded my server back to 3.51, installed the GUI and the
firmware upgrade worked first time. The only thing I noticed was that
the inbuilt Kermit used a 94 byte block size on the ttransfer, all the
other Kermits I tried negotiated a 98 byte block size - so maybe the
    transfer didn't really work right?

So now it's back to reinstalling NT4 so I cvan start installing the FT
    kit of 1.1

I've use the procedure outlined in the storageworks raid array
installation guide for nt clusters using the terminal application
and clcp which worked just fine. You shouldn't have had to downgrade
to do this. Perhaps you should review the section of the manual
on the firmware upgrade to determine what is different.

I'll post a reply to note 6 for reference to this manual (and
  others)

note, the 'errata' document for upgrading firmware.

There is much discussion of this in the HSZ40 notes conference. Apparently,
there are problems using Keaterm's Kermit. Hyperterm was recommended. It
works well for me.
