293.0. "My So-Called Life" by SUFRNG::WSA038::SATTERFIELD (Close enough for jazz.) Fri Sep 16 1994 13:13

Having watched the first three episodes of this new series, I'm beginning to
agree with the high critical praise it's recieved. This type of thing is very
difficult to do well. An adolescents view of the world is skewed at best and
it's usually not taken very seriously by adults. They've done a good job of
filming it from Angela's viewpoint and yet also objectivly. So we see what
she thinks and feels and also see how reality doesn't always coincide with
her perceptions. The adults are also usually (not always) treated as real
people instead of props. The photography has been quite good for televison
and the writing is excellent. Clair Dane (who plays Angela) is a real find,
she should have quite a future in television and film.

I also like this show. The acting, IMO, is superb.

Anyone have a copy of My So Called Life taped on Oct 13? I messed
up setting up the VCR and missed taping the episode for my wife.
I'd really appreciate a loan. I'm in the greater Maynard area....

    Thanks,

I don't think it aired on the 13th. It was in the TV listings, but when I
went to find it on the tube, it wasn't there.

Despite a letter writing campaign and lots of critical praise (Clair Danes
just won a Golden Globe) this series is leaving the air after this week.
The possibility still exists that it may come back but I'm not holding my
breath. It's terrible ratings (bottom 10) have doomed it.

There's a chance that a cable station (Lifetime springs to mind) would
take the series once the network cancelled it. Small but loyal
audiences are right up their alley.
293.11TOHOPE::WSA038::SATTERFIELDClose enough for jazz.Fri Jan 27 1995 09:138

Yes, an article in the paper today mentioned that possibility and specifically
Lifetime. It also quoted a producer of the show as doubting it since it's
budget is higher that what Lifetime has been able to support.

Brief mention in the coming week's TV Guide that some network
programming honcho has denied it's being cancelled.

I think this is a real shame. I've only recently been able to start watching
it, and it is so well crafted. The pains of adolescence are captured to the
point where it almost hurts to watch. I especially love the Angela (wow,
what a presence!) and Brian characters.
293.14Who to write?HACMAN::HACKDon Hack, NISMon Feb 06 1995 04:209
We only watch two shows each week, Simpsons and My so-called life. We
tape them and watch when we can. If anyone know who to write regarding
someone picking up My So-called Life, please post it here. It is sad
to see what is on TV when we set up the VCR and MSCL does not come on.
Typically, police stories or some other skewed view of life. It will be
sad if such a good show goes under.

Latest word is that someone (presumably using an Internet service)
organized an email campaign and has forwarded thousands of letters to
ABC. The decision will be made in May. Perhaps the public library
will have a phone book for NYC which would list the network's business
addresses. Mark it to the attention of Programming.

Put a fork in it, this show has been cancelled. Very unlikely it will be
picked up by someone else either. It's an old song and dance with most
quality television series.

MTV has been showing the reruns of this show lately. They had some kind
of dial-in survey to see if people wanted to see it run a second time
and had an overwhelming yes response. I seriously doubt it, but maybe
MTV will do something with the show. I got these details indirectly
from my 12yr old daughter who just discovered this show and loves it.

I think it's been on around 6 or 7pm weeknights on MTV.

This show just started in the UK last night, and from the first episode
seems very good...but could someone explain the concept of 'yearbook'?
It sounds like a collection of pictures and comments about the students
(the kind of thing that happens in the UK just before you leave), but
it seems to be a major proect, and not taking part seems like a sin?

    Thanks!

That's about right. In United States highschools (education for kids ages
about 14-17) and colleges it's common for a "class" (all the kids who are
scheduled to graduation in a particular year) to have a "yearbook".

It is a hard covered publication containing a picture of each student along
with a small amount of information about that student and it also contains
general information about the class. There is usually a sports section and
sections reporting on other activities in which the class was involved such as
school plays, concerts, etc.

The year book covers just about everything to do with the students in a
particular class except for academics. In Highschool it is often considered
a status position to be on the year book staff. In College it's more likely
to be done by those interested in a career in publishing.
