291.0. "Hawkeye - new or old series?" by GRANMA::JBOBB (Janet Bobb dtn:339-5755) Thu Sep 15 1994 09:41

Last night, one of the 2 CBS stations in the Washington/Baltimore area
ran a 1 hr. show called Hawkeye. The only character easily recognizable
was Linda Carter (ie Wonder Woman), though several other actors looked
familiar. Produced by J. Cannell, with a 1994 date (we think that is
    the date we saw).

The story seems to be loosely based on the JF Cooper story Last of the
Mohicans as you have the character of Hawkeye and Chingochkook (sp?)
and seems to take place at a British fort (can't remember the name
    right now).

the story line seems to be about a couple from Virginia (Linda Carter
is the wife) who move to this fort in upstate NY on the urging of a
Captain at the fort, who is the husband's younger brother, to start a
trading business. Older brother seems to be a bit of an oaf in the
beginning, not woods/frontier smart at all, but becomes more of a hard,
even ruthless business person as the story continues. The brothers seem
to get along in the beginning but then we find out, through an
argument, that the younger brother went through his part of the
inheritance, older brother "bought" him his Captain's rank and now
expects little brother to help him obtain the trading contracts for the
fort and surrounding area. Part of the story was about this, the other
part was about Hawkeye, who is first introduced when he and
Chingochkook save the Virgina couple from hostile natives.

Unfortunately, since we were having Voting Primaries going on, at least
4 times in the hour, the show was broken into by "Voting Updates"
(which IMHO, when there is only 5% of returns in, don't make much
sense...) and much of the story was lost.

My questions - did anyone else see this? Is this a pilot that never got
bought? Or an episode from an older series? There was no write up about
it in the local program guide. And I haven't seen anything about this
in the "new shows for the season" info. Also, anyone know who the other
    actors were?

IMHO - it only looked like a mediocre show with beautiful scenery
(filmed in Canada). One of the problems both I and my husband had with
it was the Indians looked more hispanic than Native american. Acting
was only average. It also seemed like Linda Carter kept getting the
direction to lean forward and breath deeply so the low front of the
dress was more obvious.... course that could be a good factor for some
    of the audience! :^)

Anyway - would be interested to hear any info on this.

I believe "Hawkeye"is played by Lee Majors (Six Million Dollar Man
among others). It was listed in this week's "Fall Preview" TV Guide
    issue.

Not quite Daniel Day-Lewis, now, is he? :)

Hawkeye is played by Lee Horsely, who's about 20 years younger
and about 20 pounds svelter than Lee Majors.

Forget the name of the show.

    RE: GTI

Yes he did play a PI and I can't think of the name of the show either.
I have been trying to think of it for some time now because it came up
during another discussion of another show. All I can remember is that
he was (as the PI) rich, his female friend and cohert was called CJ and
that he drove a Bently I believe. I think it took place in Texas.
It's driving me nuts not be able to think of the name of the show.

    RE: Hawkeye

I believe it was supposed to be a regular show on one of the regular
networks, but no one was interested in it. I can't imagine it will
last very long, unless of course, Linda Carter can draw enough
"Ogglers" to keep the ratings up.

Matt Houston was Lee Horsley's big claim to fame in the P.I. space. It
also featured Pamela what's-her-name as the foxy assistant and a
    near-omnipotent Apple II computer.

He also had a western show. I believe it was called Paradise which I
liked and was disappointed when they cancled it. I liked the kids that
starred in it with him. Can't think of the show he was a villian in
    that you mentioned.

Thanks for the info - I knew someone out here in notes land would know!
I bought the Fall TV Guide but haven't given it a full look-through, so
    I will check it out.

Since posting the original note, I've found out more about the show.
There was a "Making of Hawkeye" 1/2 hour show on this past week.

The show is being filmed in Vancouver, all the actors interviewed
talked about the wonderful scenery. All of the filming is being done
there. They have built all the sets on location, trying to stay as
accurate as possible. They have at least one historian "consulting".
There were even comments on having problems with the black powder for
the guns, just like people of that time would have had, so they are
never sure if the guns will shoot when the scene is being filmed.

Linda Carter plays the main female lead, Elizabeth (?). Lee Horsley
plays Hawkeye and Ronald Grant plays Chingochkok (I know I'm not
spelling that right...sorry). Don't remember the other actors. The
story is based on James F. Cooper's stories of Hawkeye.

There were severel scenes in the first show that could have been taken
directly from the recent movie Last of the Mohicans, so it will be
    interesting to see what happens.

As I said in my first note, don't know how well this will do. The
acting and storyline was only fair, IMHO. The show does not appear to
be on any of the major channels in the Wash./Baltimore area. It is
currently listed for channel 50 and channel 68 (both channels from
smaller towns in the viewing area, in is from Hagerstown). Neither of
these channels seem to have any affiliation with any of the 4 networks.
Not sure why the show did appear last week on a CBS station, maybe they
    were testing it out.

anyway - thanks for the info!

Has anyone heard if there will be new episodes of this, this year? It
hasn't shown up in the Washington DC area yet?

    thanks!

No, it wasn't renewed. Not suprising, since Boston's channel 38 was
far from alone in scheduling this show in the early hours of the
    morning.
