490.0. "Spy Game" by SSGV02::GRANT (Margo, DTN 381-6192) Tue Mar 04 1997 15:16

I was pleasantly surprised by "Spy Game" (a replacement show??) last night --
sorry, don't remember which network. I had only read a few words about it and
would probably not have deliberately watched it ... but the TV was already on,
in started, and instantly there were several famous TV-spies-from-the-past on
screen. Couldn't stop watching after that, and enjoyed it as decent 8:00 fare.

The two leads aren't just the pretty faces they seem to be; the characters
seem to promise some depth. Loved the "McGyver-ish" take on a spy who doesn't
carry a gun. It was campy and fun.

The IMDB has no information about this show other than the start
    	date, which was last night.

It's on ABC, and is produced by the same guy who produces "Hercules"
and "Xena" (Sam Raimi). That's all I know...

    	Sam Raimi?

Wow, there might be a reason to watch those 2 shows after all.

Huh. He finally produces a show almost worth watching?

The pilot was pretty fun. Definitely superior to that rash of ancient era
Babewatch shows that've been popping up in syndication lately.

Following the end of the Cold War and the dismantling of the [Image]
international espionage system, E.C.H.O. (Emergency Counter
Hostilities Organization) was born. Secretly orchestrated by the
President of the United States, E.C.H.O.'s goal is to put out domestic
"brush fires" involving former agents. Led by bureau chief Micah Simms
(Bruce McCarty), the organization's ultimate success rests squarely on
the shoulders of Max London (Allison Smith), his young counterspy; and
the newly recruited, legendary ex- agent, Lorne Cash (Linden Ashby).

Lorne is a jaded ex-spy who would rather be golfing than back in the
world of espionage. He has seen it all and embodies an edgy wariness
born of Cold War paranoia. Lorne is a wise guy who adheres to his "trust
nobody, tell nothing" mandate cultivated during his professional days.
Taught never to use guns or hardware which could be used against him,
Lorne himself is a weapon -- a master improviser who uses either his
body or "found objects" with deadly skill. He has unflinching courage
and nerves of steel, not to mention a slightly left-of-center sense of
humor and, most important, a finely honed knack for surviving.

Trained in the military, Max is a secret agent of the new, post-Cold War
era. Young, beautiful and cool-headed, she is fairly modest about her
most amazing gift -- her photographic memory. Unlike Lorne, Max is
well-versed in the latest technology and is accustomed to using a
variety of weapons and gadgets. Although not yet experienced in the
field, she is fearless, loyal, quick-witted and extremely adept at
physical combat. Max is a good match for Lorne, taking their partnership
  seriously and heeding his advice.

A "boy wonder espiocrat," Micah Simms is E.C.H.O.'s top dog, who reports
directly to the President. Intelligent and personable, Simms knows his
rank is of little importance to his two headstrong agents and is
sometimes frustrated by their driving determination.

One of the most important nations in the world needs the most cunning
and skillful operatives to protect it. The Cold War may be over, but the
enemies are still out there -- they're just better hidden. Now it's up
to Lorne Cash and Max London to seek out, outwit and kick out today's
  most nefarious infiltrators.

"Spy Game" stars Linden Ashby as Lorne Cash, Allison Smith as Max London
and Bruce McCarty as Micah Simms.

Created by Sam Raimi & Ivan Raimi and John McNamara, the series is
executive produced by John McNamara, Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert. Kathy
McCormick serves as co-executive producer. David Simkins and David Eick
are supervising producers. Ed Ledding is the producer.

Filmed in Los Angeles on the Universal Studios lot, "Spy Game" is a
Renaissance Pictures/McNamara Paper Products Production in association
with Universal Television and Warner Bros. Television.

Only caught the last 15 minutes of this and wasn't really impressed.
However, the closing scene had Robert Culp holding the Statue of
Liberty hostage - if he is an example of some of the "ex-spies" then
it might be fun watching just for that!

    Who else showed up?

Patrick McNee and Peter Lupus were in the very beginning.

Cute concept. Can't wait to see Robert Vaughn, David McCallum, Stephanie
Powers, Bill Cosby, Diana Rigg, etc. (Don Adams? Barbara Feldon? :-) )
show up in future episodes. Though it would be nice if they had more than
cameo appearances...

I watched the first few minutes of the first episode and didn't like it.
Too violent, for one thing. In a recent issue of TV Guide, the reviewer panned
it and I more or less agree.
I didn't watch spy shows in the 1965-85 time frame, so the appearances by
earlier stars don't have much meaning to me.
There was an obvious glitch in the first show. When the characters walk into
the bar, there is a green canopy over the door that says "ALIBI". When they
leave the bar a few minutes later, there is a plain green canopy over the
door.
I admit that I'm fussy about things like this. A notorious example of this
was that a few years ago there was a movie with a high-speed chase. In one
scene the car has a big 2-digit number painted on the door. A few seconds
later, the same door on the same car showed up again, without the number.
And in Groundhog Day, during the car chase scene, the sun went in and out
of the clouds about 5 times in 10 seconds.

This is NOT a serious show, so I'd suspect that any goofs/glitches
    	are put there intentionally.

And how could you not watch any spy shows for 20 years? Not even
    	"Get Smart"?
