441.0. "~THE KINDRED~" by WMOIS::TARDUGNO () Tue Mar 19 1996 00:50

In two weeks, on April 2nd, FOX will have another new show
courtesy of Aaron Spelling. The new offering is called
"THE KINDRED". The main character is played by Mark Frankel,
the gorgeous man that had a series named "Fortune Hunter"
last year, that got cancelled in October.
(Frankel was Very good and it used to be on a Sunday. They
never gave it a good time slot or a chance to find an
    audience.)

He gets another chance at american tv (he's English)...
From what I've read and seen in coming previews for
"The Kindred", Frankel is the head of an organization
seemingly like the Mafia, when in fact they are Vampires.

From what I've read, its supposed to be more on the classy
side (no blood and guts)........I'm hoping its going to be
    good.

correction to my own note: Fortune Hunter was on over
a year ago ...was cancelled in October 1994.
time flies when your watching the tube...

This show is on 8:00 on FOX network...I just read a preview review
on this and the other new show "Profit". They both got an "A"
which almost Never happens....also noted in the article was they
suspect that The Kindred should be bigger than both new shows
and maybe should come out a big winner because of the
acting and writing for this show is top notch....we'll see....
441.3Vampire: The MasqueradeMILKWY::RENcrime control not gun controlWed Apr 03 1996 21:3317
Its based on Vampire: The Masquerade. In the credits, it was referred
to as a book (i.e. based on the book...), but I've only seen it as a
role-playing game. I've never played the game, but it seems to be very
popular, as Vampire: The Masquerade live action role-playing events at
conventions seem to be pretty big with high attendance.

Other spinoffs include a collectible card game published by Wizards of
the Coast (famous for Magic: the Gathering), originally published as
Jyhad, and rereleased as Vampire: The Eternal Struggle. The show seemed
to include many names and terms from the game/book, and was interesting
to watch. However, from a perusal of the game book, and some of the
card game art, I was expecting a much darker tone and a more
gothic/punk atmosphere than portrayed in the show. Still, it wasn't
bad, and I will watch the 1st 1 hour episode tonight.

Im waiting for the 2nd install tonite...I hope it gets better
The rating on this was an A from the reviewer...couldn't believe
my eyes since they Never give A's for new shows

I thought the dialogue was 95% sharp and moved right along....
We'll see how this pans out.....

I watched the pilot and thought the acting (with the exception of Mark Frankel)
bad and the script even worse. Nice production though and it was nice to see
Jeff Kober (from China Beach) again. The premise isn't bad but the execution
really needs some work.

The Globe TV critic, Fred Biddle, gave this show a terrible review.

441.7I liked wednesday's show a little betterMILKWY::RENcrime control not gun controlThu Apr 04 1996 21:2413
I watched yesterday's episode. I thought it was a little better than
the pilot, and they added a few twists to the plot. They still need to
work on giving it a lot more atmosphere and mood, though I thought
there was some improvement last night. Maybe the writers/directors
and designers should look at some of the large amount of artwork
produced for the games (especially the color paintings in the card
game) to get a better feel for that sort of thing. Its not just a
visual thing, but a combination of writing, visual impact and acting.
I suppose this is important for any show, but I thing its especially
important for something like a vampire story.

441.9RE .8 Recap of wednesday's episodeMILKWY::RENcrime control not gun controlFri Apr 05 1996 18:3564
    Re .8

Brief recap of wednesday's episode. I have most of this on tape...I
tried to pause out the commercials, but forgot to restart the tape
during one segment. I wasn't planning on saving it, but if you'd like
to borrow it, please send me email at MILKWY::REN, and I will save it
for you. I live and work in Marlboro. Otherwise, read the spoilers
below, and I'll use the tape for taping my weekend shows.

    SPOILER WARNING:

    Very brief recap:

    1) A young female investigative reporter tries to do a story on Luna.
He talks to her a few times, decides that if he can control her,
they can actually use her to protect the Kindred and the Masquerade.
He tries to seduce her but may actually be falling for her. He buys
her newspaper through some subsidiary companies and offers her the
       top editor position.

    2) The cop (I keep forgetting his name) wires a crooked
dockworker foreman in a sting operation on Fury, but it goes
sour, and they kill the foreman. The cop gets in first, tries
to pull the stake out of the foreman, just in time for all the
other cops to see him with a bloody stake in his hands. IA opens an
investigation on him, because they think he killed the foreman.

he also does more research on vampires and finds they have the
ability to see past events if they can touch objects associated with
the events. He takes ring that the killers tried to remove from the
foreman, but couldn't remove, and brings it to Luna to "read". Luna
says if he can get proof that Fury broke the prohibition against
killing humans (the foreman was actually a human), he could have
him eliminated. The ring only shows the actual killer, not Fury.

Among the Kindred clan leaders a vote is taken, they vote to kill
the Kindred who killed the foreman, but they don't get enough
votes to kill Fury, the killer's boss.

    3) The cop finds a Street Sweeper shotgun loaded with phosphorus
rounds in his apartment. He receives a call about this "gift",
and is told that it is to take care of any unfriendly visitors
he may recieve in the night. A Kindred (possibly the killer of
the foreman, I'm not sure) attacks him in the night, but he manages
kill him with the shotgun. The phosphorus rounds are called
       "dragon's breath".

    4) Fury speaks with the cop's kindred partner, who agrees to set
up and kill Luna. However, when he goes to see Luna, Luna "reads"
him, but surprisingly says something like "you told him you'd
betray and kill me...and he believed it?" leaving the partner's true
intentions a mystery. Is he working for Luna, and trying to set up
Fury, or is it the other way around?

These are the major things that happened, that I remember. These 4
items were kind of intertwined in the episode.

The season finally was pretty good.....I liked the way they ended it.
I believe this one is cancelled so at least Aaron Spelling gave it
a more than decent burial in its final episode....I'll miss
seeing Mark Frankel who is a good actor and not to mention one of thE
most handsome men I've seen on TV in a while.

This got cancelled??? What happened in the last show? I thought
this was going to be around a while with all those great write ups
    it got.

441.13Not Cancelled yet, only a few episodes made.MILKWY::RENcrime control not gun controlFri May 17 1996 16:0818
Kindred was a mid-season replacement, and thus only a limited number of
episodes were produced. All have now been aired. The decision to cancel
or renew the series has not been made yet, though the decision will be
made in the next week or two. If you liked the show, you can write to
Fox to urge renewal...they do take fan response into account (though
ratings and advertising sales are the primary factors). Contact

Kindred has now been cancelled, along with Space: Above and Beyond. Sliders
was actually renewed. X-Files has been moved to sundays, and a new

Disappointing that they cancelled it. I managed to get myself right
    involved in the show.

Is it for sure cancelled or is their any word on it being picked up by
    a different network?

441.16I heard Showtime got itMILKWY::RENcrime control not gun controlThu Jun 27 1996 21:108
I just heard that Showtime picked it up. I don't remember what the
source was, or what format it was going to be shown in (were they
picking it up as a series, did they get the rights for made for cable
movies, or were they just going to air the original episodes as cable
    movies?).

I think no-one but me remembers a great TV guy called David Jansen
    (sp).
He was in a few shows that I enjoyed week after week.
I know that he did introduce at least one actress to later stardom.
I always thought his great laid back style gave a lot of intrest to his
    shows,
But then I am old enough to remember Roger Moore as the Saint pulling
off the perfect job, to prove a point.
