Last spring Jimmie Vaughan invited blues world legends to join him in
saluting his younger brother. STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN: A RETROSPECTIVE - the
first televised tribute to the late bluesman - unites Stevie Ray's "friends,
peers and heroes" on the AUSTIN CITY LIMITS soundstage for an evening of
roof-raising blues. Brother Jimmie leads this "who's who" of blues masters,
including B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Dr.
John, Art Neville and former members of Stevie Ray's band, Double Trouble,
Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon and Reese Wynans. The program airs on PBS as
part of the March 1996 pledge drive.
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN: A RETROSPECTIVE honors the late musician by combining
electrifying performances with footage from Vaughan's AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
appearances and interviews with the featured performers, who share personal
anecdotes and reminiscences about the young star.
Vaughan's untimely death in August 1990 stunned fans around the world. Only
seven years earlier the native Texan captured the eyes and ears of the music
world with his debut album, "Texas Flood", recorded with Double Trouble.
Subsequent albums such as "Couldn't Stand the Weather", "Soul to Soul", "In
Step" and "Family Style", a collaboration with his brother, established
Vaughan as one of the world's premier blues guitarists. Between 1983 and
1990, Vaughan earned multiple Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards, plus
honors from Guitar Player magazine and the Blues Foundation.
Footage from Vaughan's first AUSTIN CITY LIMITS appearance in 1983 captures
his awe-inspiring showmanship and the lightning speed that characterized his
early performances. Later in his career, as clips from his second appearance
in 1989 show, Vaughan complemented his technical flash with strong vocals
and compelling lyrics. A deeply spiritual man, he transformed himself from a
flamboyant young guitarist into one of the most widely respected musicians
of his generation. In a unique turnaround, his musical heroes, such as
Clapton, King and Guy, ultimately became his fans. "Stevie had many ways of
showing you that he had not only talent," says B.B. King, "but he had the
feel for playing blues."
Eric Clapton remembers the passion that permeated Vaughan's playing. "I
think he influenced me in terms of his attitude. Let alone his style. Or his
ability," Clapton says. "His attitude toward his music was so strong, and I
think his strength was in that sort of power he had with his guitar and with
his singing and with his music."
Vaughan's heroes and friends honor his memory with riveting performances of
his songs in STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN: A RETROSPECTIVE. "This is an incredible
opportunity to keep this music alive," says Bonnie Raitt, whose performance
reaffirms her place as one of contemporary blues' best guitarists and
vocalists. Also joining in the tribute is New Orleans' own Dr. John, whose
original brand of jazz, funk and blues enticed Vaughan in the late '70s.
With everyone on stage for "Six Strings Down," a song co-written by Neville
brothers, Art and Cyril, and given to Jimmie shortly after his brother's
death, the evening reaches an emotional pinnacle.
Robert Cray predicts that Vaughan's influence will reverberate throughout
the music world for years to come. "I know that nobody will ever forget
him," Cray says. "I think for a long time coming there's going to be a lot
of frustrated guitar players trying to pick up on Stevie's stuff."
Buddy Guy knows Vaughan's music will live with him forever. "His guitar
playin' will ring in my mind and my brain till the day I'm gone," he says.
"I'll probably hear Stevie when I close my eyes."
