419.0. "The Naked Truth" by SWAM1::MEUSE_DA () Thu Jan 11 1996 20:21

Been watching this show for quite awhile.
Not bad, Tia Leone (sp?) can be quite comical.

Last nights show with the nuns was a real laugh.

How low has Rob Lowe sunk? He is supposed to be a special guest star on
this show sometime soon.

I really hate this show but it seems someone at the network must like
it because they will not let it die...It will be on twice tonight..they
are really pushing it but I do not think the characters work together
well. There are so many shows on now that I really do not like but the
seem to have a large following, example: Drew Carey, Single Guy, News
Radio, Wings, Nanny, Men behaving badly, etc.
It could be me and I just do not get these shows.

"Wings" used to be great, but it's just OK now.

And maybe it's just Tea Leoni, but I like this show also. That
    	guy Dave cracks me up.

The show is not great but it's not terrible either. It has it moments. In
some ways it seems similar to Brook Shield's new citcom and Murphy Brown in
that there is one lead star and a lot of interchangeable nobodies who all seem
to mill around in the background. They seem to surround the star with a large
collection of character actors who are more caricature than real person. At
least this show has Norm.

By contrast, on Caroline in the City the other characters seem to be more
realistic and better defined as individuals. For example, you see the other
characters on Caroline in both funny and serious scenes. In Murphy, Naked
Truth, and Shield's citcom the characters in the rabble are not taken seriously
enough to be much more than a gag from time to time.

I guess the question is whether they can afford to let the rest of the cast
remain a nameless mass of chuckles and hope the star carries it off the way
Murphy Brown does. My guess is that Murphy is an exception and the audience
will want a bit more backup for the two new shows.

There's one reason people watch this show and it's Tea. She's personally charming
and a natural comedian. Her physical style is remeniscent of Lucille Ball...without
as much ditziness. This show will succeed or fail on her. As for me...she sure is
fun to watch.

Well to some extent yes but an actress has to be really popular to make it
without a cast and story the way Murphy Brown seems to do.

Lucille Ball had Fred and Ethil, both of whom were really good characters
played by really good actors and when the show was the best she had Desi.
"Wa-do you mean you cannah go tonight!? En why-ah you feet all purple!?"

Caroline could be all Lea Thomson but they decided to put some real
characters around her and it really helps. Norm really helps this show but
his part is not big enough. It would help this show a lot to get some more
real characters.

She was more fun to watch on "Flying Blind" on Fox a couple of years
ago. The show has lost some of the wackiness that made it work. And
they still haven't really decided what to do with George Wendt (who
shouldn't be the boss; he's a supporting character) or Holland Taylor
(whose character seems to do nothing at the Comet other than complain
that she isn't in charge of it anymore).
