408.0. "The Streets of Laredo" by SUFRNG::WSA038::SATTERFIELD (Close enough for jazz.) Thu Nov 16 1995 18:31

Was everyone as disappointed with this as I was? I thought _Lonesome Dove_ was
one of the best things ever done for television and _Return to Lonesome Dove_
was almost as good (I have them both on laserdisc). So I was looking forward
to this. The story was weak, the characters were weak (again the script, the
acting was competent), there was nowhere near the involvment or emotional
content of the previous two. Why were all the characters recast? I can under-
stand one or two actors not being available or not wanting to do another, but
all of them? I like James Garner but his Captain Call was by far the weakest
of the three.

I heard that Larry McMurtry disliked the first two and cowriting this screen-
play was at his request. Well it was much more poorly written than it's
predecessors. The only thing up to the previous two was the production,
excellent cinematography. The best thing about this production was the opening
credits.
