390.0. "AMERICAN GOTHIC~" by WMOIS::TARDUGNO () Sun Sep 24 1995 12:19

New show on Channel 4 (right after X-Files) time slot 10:00....

Gary Cole is evil incarnate..as a small town sheriff BUT
before I go on...I've NEVER seen a tv show like this one...
This really was scary and I FREAKED in the beginning
with the little girl lieing on the bed, the Sheriff comes
in to comfort her and whammo I almost jumped out of my chair!
The doctor character was one I also liked...thought the acting
    was excellant

Is there anyone who saw this that would care to EXPLAIN the scenario?
it might take a few paragraphs

Hmmm, I don't know if we know enough information yet to do
the scenario! What I got from the first show is:

The sheriff is very evil and has the whole town in his pocket. The
townsfolk don't know how evil he is but some have an idea. The
ones who have an idea, don't dare do anything about it.

The first show introduces Kaleb, a young boy and his father and sister.
I missed the first few minutes, but it looks like the father freaked
out about something and was going to kill the sister. Kaleb runs out
and gets help from the sheriff and deputies. The sheriff walks in and
gets everything under control. He sends everyone out of the house.
He checks on the sister and she is a little dazed buy ok. He then
snaps her neck. A deputy saw the sheriff do this and he is scared,
but he doesn't say anything at this point.

Kaleb is taken to the hospital where the doctor is new in town
(therefore not indebted to the sheriff, doesn't know how evil he is,
and won't be bullied by him). The scenes with the doctor were good,
you could tell the sheriff wasn't used to not getting his own way.

The sheriff "convinces" Kaleb's dad to sign him over to the sheriff
and the sheriff kills the dad with the pen (stabs him in the throat).
Now Kaleb has no one left and the sheriff has the right paper work.

Somewhere out of town, a young lady is watching tv and they do a report
on the news about Kaleb. She is his "cousin" and she goes to the
    hospital to take custody.

Back at the hospital, the doctor is starting to investigate Kaleb's
parents. His mother died after Kaleb was born. She was in the room
alone with the sheriff and she decided to commit suicide by jumping out
the window. The doctor is starting to piece together that the sheriff
seems to be the only one around when bad things happen. A nurse warns
him to stop nosing around the sheriff.

Kaleb is visited in his hospital room by his mother. There are lots of
spooky special effects and message is written on the door in blood
Go Home. Kaleb takes off for home.

When he gets home, his mother visits him and replays a scene from her
life. It turns out the sheriff raped her and Kaleb is the sheriff's
    son.

By this time, the sheriff has found Kaleb and is chasing him through
the house. Kaleb sets a fire and jumps out a window leaving the
sheriff in the house. The doctor and cousin are at the house now too
looking for Kaleb. The cousin is screaming, "I know who you are".

I believe that was the end. This is just the bare bones of this show.
There are a few scenes I left out in the interest of time but they
were good scenes, maybe some one can elaborate. Also, there were a lot
of good special effects through out the show.

390.2about the cousinACIS02::SEIBERTRMon Sep 25 1995 12:3511
The cousin seems to be pretty key in whats going on. Whatever it is
happened to her too. She has some scenes where she is saying she has
lots to tell Kaleb and then they show flashbacks of her living in the
same house as kaleb. Her parents are both dead too. She was also
present went the sheriff attacked the woman which makes me think that
it was her mother and not Kaleb's mother that was attacked. I had a hard
time following that whole thing. That would make her his sister, but
I'm pretty sure she called herself his cousin. Anyone figure that
    out??

    I loved this show!!!

The flashback of the sheriff raping the mother had Kalebs sister
watching. Also all of Kalebs flashbacks (at the hospital and at the
house) were of his sister telling him stuff. Remember also that when
the sister "lost it" at the beginning of the show she kept muttering
over and over "someone's at the door". This is what made the father
go ballistic and attack the daughter. When they did the flashback
of the sheriff raping the mother, there was a knock at the door and
the little girl said "someone's at the door".

It'll be very interesting to see how this all unfolds. This show is
right up my alley and will definitely hold my interest.

So that was his sister with the birthday cake??? I though it was
his mother. I only saw the sister dead so I didn't recognize her
    alive!!

The thing I can't believe the most is that Shawn Cassidy wrote it!!!

    of Fox.

I keep seeing this series compared to "Twin Peaks", that seems to be a sloppy
comparison since about the only thing the two have in common is that they're
both very different from other series. If AG is half as good as TP I'll be
happy, so far it looks quite good. I think it would have been much better as
a two hour premiere though, it was too rushed at only one.

Randy

Brrrrrr.... this one was really scary. I am looking forward to the
    rest of this series.

The cousin does appear to know what is happening about the sheriff
wanting Caleb. Somehow she got away from it all when she was young,
but her parents apparently didn't since she was visiting their gravesite.

I don't think Caleb's father signed the paperwork before he was killed
or killed himself, or the sheriff would have been able to take the boy
from the hospital and would not have been worrying about the cousin getting
    custody.

The school teacher is in cahoots with the sheriff but we weren't given the
story on that yet, except for the part where she seduced the deputy
(to keep him out of the way, since he saw the sheriff murder the
    sister??).

The sister had apparently been catatonic or in shock since she saw the
sheriff rape her mother but she seemed to always sense when the sheriff
was coming ..."someone's at the door"... even before the sheriff first
showed up while Caleb was going for help when the father was trying to
clobber her with a shovel because she kept saying "someone's at the
door" over and over during the boy's birthday party, and even with the
same message to Caleb in blood on the wall after she was dead.

I like Gothic mysteries and this one has me hooked...

you used the word "clobber" and i've been laughing hysterically
since I read it...(its kind of a funny word).either that or i've been
watching too much X-Files...(The Files have alot of subtle humor
    in it)

American Gothic is really different and the special effects
were done well.....for TV this could turn into a rare jewel of a
series..........amazing that Shawn Cassidy could put this together
    so well....

390.10Character FlawWREATH::SCOPAWed Oct 11 1995 12:1234
I think there's a flaw in this series.

Gary Cole's character is inconsistent. At times he appears Lamont
Cranston-like in that he can "cloud men's minds" as we saw in last
    night's episode.

He seems invincible....yet why hasn't he "taken care of the Doctor and
    Caleb's cousin?

The only answer could be that the strength of one's mind is a factor
in Burke's ability to do what he wants to do.

When a character has "PerryMason-itis" (Perry NEVER lost) the show
    gets boring.

This show is teetering on that fence. Last night's episode was not
particularly good. It did continue to support the fact that many of
Trinity's citizens owe Sheriff Burke a favor...yet like the poor sap
last night and the judge last Friday...they hesitate to help him even
    though they fear him.

Anyone have any thoughts on that key found by Caleb's cousin? I'm
thinking it will unlock a box containing evidence against the Sheriff
when he was a young officer. Where is that box? Probably in the old
building that housed the town newspaper.

Anyway, getting back to Gary Cole's character...I think the show needs
to identify the weakness in this Sheriff. That is, what weapons (strong
mind, strong character, garlic, etc.) are needed to combat his powers.

One last comment...did anyone have any problem with that porch scene?
Now I understand why NBC had a viewer discretion warning for the show.

    Mike
390.11commetnsACISS1::SEIBERTRWed Oct 11 1995 13:3518
I think the his downfall are the people who are basically "good"
people who will not be bullied by him, namely the doctor and the
doctor's assistant, the lady that owns the boarding house, Caleb
    and cousin.

I think the Sheriff will only "win" with weak people who can be bought.
Those that have faith and believe in good he has no influence over
even when he does terrible things to them. Its the basic concept
    of good over evil.

The judge got strength to rule in favor of Caleb from that soup
Caleb brought over from the lady in the boarding house.

What porch scene? I guess I missed it.

I think this is definetely the creepiest show on tv right now.

The rumour that I heard was that CBS cancelled the Godfather movie that
they had scheduled due to the Pope's visit. So they showed "Courtroom"(?)
    and "American Gothic" instead.

"American Gothic" is supposed to be on again Friday and it will be a

I was amazed by the porch scene too, combined with the "swimming scene" it
was some of the most erotic scenes I've seen on television. This series seems
to be expanding the perimiter's of network television. It's artistic merits
aside that makes it a good thing, imo. I agree that this was the weakest
episode so far, it was still superior television though. That the erotic scenes
involved a (supposedly) 15 year old girl and a middle aged man made it even
more amazing that they appeared on network television.

Okay, for those of you who missed the tuesday episode and want to
  what happened.......

Sheriff Buck calls in his marker on his victim of the week, the owner
  of a fix-it/junkyard operation.Buck wants this man's 15 year old daughter
to work for him at the office part time after school, kind of a 'take her
under his wing'deal. This week's victim(TWV from here on out)stumbles and
stutters saying gee I dunno.Buck gives him a midnight deadline.
TWV doesn't reply by the deadline. At 11:58pm he hears a noise in the
basement and notices his wife isn't in bed with him.He finds the wife
doing laundry and as they start to go upstairs midnight strikes and his
wife is suddenly gets an electrical shock(I'm sketchy on that detail)and
goes flying across the celler causing bodily harm to herself.TWV franticly
runs outside to restore power to his home and runs into Sheriff Buck who
proceeds to tell TWV the extent of his wife's injuries without even seeing
her(later the good doctor gives TWV the same diagnosis).
Later that day as TWV is leaving the hospital he runs into Buck who asks
him to do him to do him a favor.TWV enthusiastically says sure, anything
you want Lucus.Buck wants him to meet someone at the bus stop and bring
that someone back to TWV's house.
The person who he's picking up ends up being his former boss (I'll call
him Chester for I can't recall his name)who had just gotten out of prison
after 17 years. He was imprisoned for killing a man whom he thought was
playing around with his teenage daughter.TWV was a shakin' when he saw
  Chester.
So back a TWV's house Buck talked TWV into having Chester stay in the
spare room for a few days, while dropping hints to everyone as that Chester
killed the wrong man and that TWV had goo-goo eye's for Chester's daughter
at about that very same time.
Now TWV's daughter gets infactuated with Chester askin' all kinds of
questions like how's it feel to kill a man and such, having a semi-innocent
conversation in his bedroom and meanwhile Chester's getting goo-goo eyes
  for her.
The next day Chester's outside, barechested and sweating away, doing some
yardwork. The daughter comes stolling out in her little sundress with a
couple of popsicles,or maybe it was a double that she broke into two.
Chester takes a break, they both end up sitting on a swinging chair on the
porch, talking nonsense and pretty much flirting with each other.I guess
controversial part would be when she's sitting with her head back and
her mouth open while Chester holds a popsicle upside down over her mouth,
and as the popsicle melts she catching the drops with her tounge.Later on
that evening TWV tells his daughter to stay away from Chester.
The next day Chester and the daughter are swimming, more like wading
together when TWV come out yelling and screaming at the other man to stay
away from her.Chester kind of menacely brushes TWV off saying they were
  only swimming.
Later that night TWV hears laughter coming out of his daughter's bedroom
so he takes out his shot gun, bursts into the room and shoots Chester.
But it ends up that it wasn't Chester that he shot it was his wife.
TWV gets taken away,Chester is shown walking away down a road and disappears
like one of the dudes going back into the cornfield in'Field of Dreams'
and Buck offers to give TWV's assistant finacial help to keep running
the business in return for a future favor.

Subplots:Sheriff Buck and the good doctor has a tug of war over Calib's
science project with the doc coming out on top.
The cousin finds a car in the junk yard that was once the
family car.She had a flashback with Buck pulling them over when
she was a child and her mother hid something under the dashboard,
snapping out of the flashback she reaches under the dash and it
was still there,a box that contained a key.

You think someone could tell me about the episode after this.
      VCR mishap,go figure.

390.22commentsACISS1::SEIBERTRTue Oct 17 1995 11:3992
Yes, I can give you an update for the Friday show. This is what I
remember.... There were two main plots and one subplot.

    In the first main plot-

The sheriff is trying to make brownie points with Caleb. Caleb likes
to shoot the bow and arrow and apparantly there is a town shooting
match between the kids. Caleb has a little boyfriend he is practicing
with. The Sheriff walks up and boots the other little boy away and
    makes small talk with Caleb.

Caleb is using a bow his dad made for him... a rickety old thing but
it works. The sheriff poo poos the bow, says Caleb need "good
equipment" and needs to "think" he's a winner. He coerces Caleb to
shoot a crow which Caleb really didn't want to do and got upset after
he killed the animal. Caleb tells the sheriff to get lost and runs
away from him. He is later visited by Merli who is also upset with him
that he let the sheriff talk him into killing the animal. She tells
him he can't run from the sheriff and he knows what is the right thing
    to do.

Later the sheriff catches up with Caleb and gives him a really nice
state of the art bow. Caleb is dazzeled and takes it and starts using
it. The sheriff is also filling his head with the fact that his little
friend (who is a better shot) just wants to win and doesn't care about
Caleb. Caleb starts to listen to the sheriff and blows off his friend.

At the shooting match, Caleb is in a tie with his friend. The sheriff
is looking on proudly as Caleb is doing so good. Caleb's friend makes
a comment, "Well, if I don't win, at least you will and that's just as
good." Caleb realizes his friend is not what the sheriff said, he
blows the match on purpose so his friend can win, he dumps the new bow
at the sheriff's feet and says, "I'm not gonna win your way" and takes
off with his friend. The sheriff is disgusted and angry, he seeks
comfort with the school teacher (what a piece of work she is!!)

    Second main plot-

The cousin is still snooping around. One of her old girlfriends was a
nurse on duty at the time of Caleb's birth/his mother's death. She
wants to go talk to her. (it is flashed back that the nurse knows the
sheriff is caleb's father. He is driving her car, she on the passanger
side and he runs them off the road into a small river).

When the cousin goes to the nurse's house, her mother (who is really
kind of wierd, all smiles even when it wasn't approprate, obsessed with
"perfection") tells her that her friend died in a car crash. They go
up to her old bedroom and her mother oogles all her awards and how
perfect she was and what perfect nurse she was....mom leaves the room
and the cousin snoops and finds old love letters from the Sheriff.

The cousin puts 2 and 2 together and confronts the sheriff. He says
they searched for her car...had the coast guard out..never found her
and so forth. The cousin hires some divers of her own and searches the
small river. The car is only 15feet down. She has it towed out of the
water. She opens the car door--the nurse isn't in there. The cousin
notices the driver seat is pushed back for a tall person.

She goes back to the mother's house and tells her that she found the
car and her daughter wasn't in it. The mom is mad but keeps smiling.
The phone rings and the mother says she can't talk right now and hangs
up. She leaves the room for a minute and the phone rings again. The
cousing picks it up..it is sanitarium where the daughter is living.

The cousin goes to visit her friend. The nurse spent 4 min. under
water and has brain damage, she doesn't remember much and lives in
another world. The sheriff walks in and brings her a rose. The
sheriff and the mother are the only ones who know she is there. The
cousin is ticked, she accuses the sheriff of doing this to her. He
says, "want to kmow what happened? I'll show you." The cousin
reluctantly gets in his car and he retraces his route, he said they had
a fight that night, he started driving with his eyes closed and
speeding, the cousin is getting more and more nervous and finally grabs
the stearing wheel making the skid in approx the same place it went of
the road before. The sheriff says is was a lovers spat and the nurse
tried to kill them both (not true, the sheriff totally went off the
road on purpose.) The cousin is sitting close to the sheriff and he
    kisses her.

    Subplot:

This involved his deputy, the nice one. His ex-wife married a wife
abuser and he was sick and tired of his ex wife getting beat up and his
kid being around this jerk. He stands up to the man, over the deputy's
shoulder, the sheriff pulls up and gives the wife beater a look. The
wife beater backs down saying he will not do it anymore. The wife
beater is a wood worker and he makes a point of saying his hands are
for art. The deputy leaves and the wood worker trips and falls onto
    his saw..there goes the hands.

    That's about it,
    Renee

.22 < Thanx for the update...

Question: Was the black woman given custody of Caleb on Friday's
show? She wasn't on Tuesday's show. She's only been in
one scene in the 4 episodes I've seen. She is real, isn't
                  she?

Overall I'd have to say that I really like this show.I don't
watch too many network dramas so I can't compare this with what's
out there but as one filer already put it 'this is right up my alley'.
I think the creepiest scene so far,and there have been many, was in
the 2nd episode. The first scene with the coroner in the autopsy room
by himself doing a psuedo-postmortim on Merly and her father. There
was a second scene similar to that later in the show but I felt that
they went too the well too often and it didn't have the same effect.

A thought: I would have watched 'In the Heat of the Night' if Carrol

    Steve,

The black woman was not on Friday's show that I remember. Caleb's
scenes were mostly outside shooting the bow or in school. When he
talked to Merly he was already in his bedroom.

The black woman does have custody of him though. Remember when they
did the custody hearing and the Sheriff was there with the school
teacher, the doctor and his assistant and the cousin (funny how I don't
know anyones names!). The sheriff was all cocky and self assured,
pointing out how the doctor was an alchohlic, the school teacher nailed
the cousin saying how exciting she was going under cover in crack
houses and what an exciting job she had and she is never home. The
sheriff thought for sure he was going to have Caleb (he also "visited
the judge before hand and reminded the judge he owed the sheriff a
favor) and the judge declares the black woman the guardian!! It was a
great scene! The sheriff just about laid an egg!!

Later, when Caleb is moving in, it turns out the doctor is a renter
there so in effect, Caleb is now with the doctor.

        Renee,
Yes I remember seeing that episode,it's just that I think
there must be some kind of history with her with the sheriff but
yet she's only been shown in one scene in six episodes now. There
were a few scenes in boarding house on last Friday's show, too.
     Nit,nit,nit.

      General comments on Friday's:
This episode's bugging me,is it bugging you? It was good to
see Bruce Campbell again, good old Brisco County Jr. himself. He's
     also been in a couple of exec.prod.Sam Raimi's movies,Evil Dead 2
and Army of Darkness.Too bad he had an untimely demise(he did die,
didn't he?)it might have been a good recurring role for him.
Overall I thought it was pretty good.I liked the old double
nightmare trick with Caleb.I knew what was in that box before the
cousin opened it but I still get chills up my spine just thinking
about it.And I just love the look on Buck's face when he get's
     double crossed.

Yes, its "bugging" me!! Ewwwwwww I hate bugs!!

I think that guy is dead. The cousin walked away (not much she could
do) and Buck sure wasn't going to save him. He opened the box and
laughed at him--he couldn't stand that guy.

I think that most of this show was actually a lover's spat between
the sheriff and the school teacher and they made up at the end.
Imagine if they were really mad at each other!!

I loved what Caleb did with the money!!! Another burn on the sheriff!!

Re: the black lady--yes, I've only seen her on that one show. So far
they haven't said anymore about her.

Good points: my favorite show of the year. A great replacement for
people who liked Twin Peaks, old Picket Fences, X Files,
Nightstawker, etc. Twisted, well acted, *perfectly*
casted (btw, this guy should have been Randall Flagg in
"The Stand," no question). And great comedy: "Never
let your conscience be your guide," "Can't we all just
get along?" A must-see or must-tape every week.

Bad points: Um, too much more of the Caleb gets tempted, Caleb gives
into Buck's temptations, Caleb repents, Caleb screws Buck
plots will start to get tired. Get on with something more
substantial and mix it up a bit.

Thankful point: Given how wretchedly awful "Picket Fences" is this
year, I'm glad this is on. Man, what happened to that
show - did Kelly's leaving affect it that much. Whew,
that stinks this year - Melrose Fences.

Well American Gothic is off the air until "early next year in a new time slot".
The good news is that it is still in production and now I can watch Homocide
as well. More good news is Due South is returning in the 8pm Friday timeslot
and Picket Fences is moved back to 10pm. This makes Friday night the best
night for tv. Due South, X Files, and either Picket Fences or Homocide makes
for a great lineup. I hope American Gothic doesn't end up in a bad time slot,
my vote is for Wednesday at 10.

This new lineup starts for CBS on December 8th, specials fill in until then.

Word is that because of falling ratings for both Pickett Fences and American
Gothic that they didn't want to run them during sweeps. Moving Pickett Fences
back to ten and away from X Files may help it. American Gothic just got
pushed out of it's spot. They have ordered a full season of episodes so it
will be back in January, hopefully in the 10:00 Wednesday spot vacated with
the cancellation of Courthouse.

Saw the advertisement for American Gothic for Wednesdays at 10:00??
Why did they move it out of the Friday time-slot??? I thought
it was perfect after Strange Luck and X-Files....oh well
    Was it doing that bad??

390.35CSC32::MA_BAKERTue Jan 02 1996 16:5726

Your thinking about it being perfect after X-Files was exactly what CBS
had thought. They thought that they would capture the X-Files audience
by running it right after X-Files.

American Gothic's numbers were hanging in the low 90s out of something
    like 105 programs rated.

But it was not so much that American Gothic was doing so badly, it was
that almost everything on CBS has been doing so badly. Wednesday night
was really hurting and Picket Fences was not doing very well in the
earlier time slot on Fridays, either. You might remember CBS tried out
an episode of AG in the Weds time slot earlier this fall. They must have
been encouraged by how it did there.

CBS kinda gave up on getting the 18-45 age bracket and brought back
Due South (My Favourite TV Show so that did not break my heart at all
;-) - this was supposed to be for 8 episodes and I have not heard if they
are going to order more than that -, followed by whatever that Dick Van
Dyke mystery program is called, and then moved Picked Fences back to its
original Friday slot. CBS called this trying to bring back its more
    traditional audience for Fridays.

An entire season of American Gothic has been ordered by CBS, by the
way, for what that is worth. So all the episodes should get aired in
    some time slot.

The local newspaper today says CBS is "quietly" pulling it off through
the Feb sweeps. They will be showing specials and movies on WEDs thru Feb,
andit is not clear if or when they will bring it back.

They say the ratings have not improved in the Weds time slot. But I
watch the ratings weekly and it seems to me that they have been better
    lately.

It looks like CBS will be cancelling AG. They have said they will continue
airing new episodes beginning March 6th but that remains to be seen. Since
ratings have been so low in both time slots and they pulled it for February
sweeps it would be very unlikely that they will renew it. Looks like the best
we can hope for is that they will at least complete this season. I don't
know if we should attribute it's low ratings to CBS mishandling or the general
public's lack of taste. I'd guess the latter.

Is anyone else getting totally sick of networks cancelling
a show before it really has a chance? Here is another example
of a show that had a few episodes, got pulled off for the holidays,
got put back on a different night and is now pulled off for another
month maybe to be cancelled. They don't give anyone enough time
to find it again and get into it. It is also very hard to keep
an audience when they keep pre-empting like this. Very annoying.

    RS
390.42STAR::MDNITE::RIVERSNo commentFri Feb 09 1996 14:0816
Maybe enough people don't complain about show shuffling to the networks.
Also, in the case of AG, it's going to be very hard for a show to find it's
audience on a network that's having trouble getting people to watch.
Where does CBS advertise it's shows? On CBS. If nobody's watching,
nobody's going to see the advertisement.

Too bad if this one leaves. Maybe somebody else will pick it up (FOX
would be nice, they seem more inclined to leave shows be despite
    relatively low ratings).

Any decent show is not allowed on iota of a chance if it's not

With today's TV execs, shows like "All in the Family" and "WKRP"

American Gothic was the one unique piece of entertainment on the
entire slate this year (even X-Files is going a little "pop").

Why can't they just give it a lousy time-slot, one where they don't

One thing we can do is write and let CBS know what we want, it would need to
be now since the decision will be made shortly (if it hasn't been already).
A series that's on the cusp really can be saved by letter writing. And keep
in mind that sending a snailmail letter counts much more in their minds than
telephone calls or email. The address is in reply 39.

Does anyone have an episode guide for this show, or know of a good web
    site?

We have had about ten or so episodes in the UK, and I'm enjoying it a
great deal, but I'm not sure that either our TV channel is showing them
in the right order, or maybe they were made without too much focus on
    continuity?

Near the start, Caleb went to stay in a boarding house run by an
interesting coloured lady - the next few shows, there seemed to be one
or possibly two white women running the place?
Then last week, we had a good show where Calebs sister comes back to
life using the spirit of an unborn baby, but the opening title sequence
    was totally different.

This week the opening was back to normal, and the coloured lady was
back in the boarding house (but no mention of the journalist character)
    - this was the episode where a radio host wanted to get on TV, and
Caleb hadn't seen his sisters ghost for a while.

    Any opinions?
