359.0. "Jurassic Park on Network TV" by SWAM1::MEUSE_DA () Fri Apr 07 1995 08:26

I saw this brief ad on the tube for Jurassic Park. It was on one
of the network stations, 2, 4 or 7. That it would be shown on tv
    in May.
I've got the tape so don't care. But just it seemed to soon for
such a film to make it to network tv.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what the ad appeared to state.Showed
a dino foot and puddle, ferns. You know the scene.

Maybe it's a new TV show.

I thought it was a bit soon too. It did come out almost 2 years ago,
the summer of '93 but I still saw some theaters running it last
year. I did enjoy that movie so I will probably tape it.

Channel 2 (PBS in Boston) is doing a new series called Eyewitness. The
first in the series was on Monday night at 8:30pm. Each of the series
is a one work title. The first was "Cats" and was all about cats. It
was kinda interesting. One of the shows they will be showing is called
"Dinosaurs" and will include a bit on how they did Jurassic Park. Maybe
this is what you saw an ad for???

I remember hearing that NBC (or was it CBS or ABC?) bought the tv
rights for Jurassic Park and Shindler's List for a ton of cash.

It will be on in May. Isn't May one of the sweeps months?
359.6saw ad on NBC for movieGRANPA::JBOBBJanet Bobb dtn:339-5755Sat Apr 08 1995 07:079
I say the ad last night. It was on NBC (during Friends) and it
definately looked like an ad for the movie, not a show about the movie.
It had the scene where the mumblelyfratz dinasaur (can't remember which
it is) is peaking through the kitchen door window. And the caption read
    "coming in May".

It will be interesting to see has this translates to the small screen!

yep, they ran a real long commercial for it on channel 4 last night.
They are showing it in May during the sweeps. Appears May will be
a big month for taping shows.

I am looking forward to the tv movie Langoliars(sp?) based on the
Stephen King story. I enjoyed the story, hope the movie is good.

Velociraptor. And TV Guide (I think) notes that it was decided NOT to
run it in letterbox (bah humbug). Supposedly the only editing is for
language ("oh poop, here comes the gosh-darned dinosaur").

Letterbox would be nice. I've got the standard version tape, would be
    nice to compare them.

Personally I wouldn't bother watching a film like this on network TV. The
whole point to this film is it's special effects. To watch it panned and
scanned in the terrible picture and sound of network tv and with adds constant-
ly interrupting would be a waste of time, imho. I think the only good way to
see a film like this is in a theatre (assuming it's a good one, most are
not) or on the THX laserdisc in a decent home theatre.

Agreed. I LOVE letterbox (and don't understand people who can't move
their chairs a little closer, if they think letterbox is "too small")
and though my TV is stereo and my receiver and speakers are decent, I
would rather they not clean up the language for me, TYVM.

I don't like letterboxing. It's more than moving closer, you lose resolution
if you have to move closer and it all gets fuzzy. Now when high definition
TV comes along, then letterboxing might make more sense.

    re. 11

you are right and I agree.

but there are those people that will not go to theaters. They watch
tv and rent movies. My neighbor is like that. He enjoys films, but
hates theaters. He hates the prices and dislikes crowds.

Me thinks you missed something :-) When HDTV comes along then
	letterboxing is *not* needed!

Yes, letterboxing does lose a *little* resolution, but without
letterboxing you are losing about 1/3 (yes, 33%) of the original
resolution (film) to begin with. Of course if one only watches
movies filmed by ex-TV directors/actors/... then you are not
losing much since they (like Shatner, ala Capt. Kirk) only use
the middle of the shot to begin with. Take a film like Blade
Runner however made for the wide screen and you really do lose
alot with a cropped image :-(
359.16I really dislike letterbox format OCTAVE::VIGNEAULTCapsicum cravingsWed Apr 12 1995 02:366

I personally find letterboxing to be extremely distracting. If a
movie is in letter box format, I can't change the channel fast
enough. The JP video looks fine on TV without letterboxing.

In order to do Schindler's list on network teevee, they will either have
to cut the hell out of it, split it into multiple nights, or both. Either
way, it'll be ruined.

359.18Well it was on...ASDG::SBILLFri May 12 1995 12:0113
It seemed like five minutes of movie, fifteen minutes of commercials. When they
have a movie like this they should really consider sticking to regular
commercials and skipping the promos (for other shows) they would make the same
amount of money on the movie and they would be able to cut the amount of time
people have to wait for the movie to come back on. Actually lately it's the
promos that have gotten more irritating than the regular commercials, they add
so much time between content and if you're not interested in the show it's
really irritating. I never thought I'd fall asleep during JURASSIC PARK but I
did. I just couldn't get into it because the commercials (and promos) kept
breaking the suspense and they were too long. The sound was rather weak too.
