338.0. "Super Bowl Halftime Show" by RANGER::MAYNARD () Tue Jan 31 1995 07:14

This was undoubtedly the WORST halftime presentation I have ever seen!
It featured Patti Labelle and Tony Bennett and and a storyline called
"Indiana Jones and the Mysterious Eye."
Patti Labelle looked like a twenty dollar hooker and couldn't lip-synch
    worth a damn!
Tony Bennet looked embarrased, when he wasn't hidden behind the plumage
of the Las Vegas style showgirls.
The Indiana Jones skit looked like something written, directed and
produced by a 14 year old boy on steroids.
I felt bad for the people in the stadium because with all of the
smokepots going off, I'm sure that all they saw was one large smoke
    cloud.
IMO They should just scrap the whole idea of a Super Bowl half-time
spectacular. It's become annoying at best.

These things are always the pits.

The time Michael Jackson did the show it wasn't quite as bad but it's usually
pretty awful.

And the game wasn't much better although the Chargers did give the gamblers
a scare when they threatened to score near the end which would have resulted
in the 49'ers not covering the 19 point spread.

  Highlight was the Bud commercial

  BUD ...
  BUD ... SER ...
  BUD ... SER ... ... WEIS

I really didn't watch the Superbowl but kept checking in to see
the score - unfortunately, one of the times I checked in I
caught the halftime show - it was pretty bad and that costume
Patti was wearing was awful - I would have been so embarrased.
You would think by now she could tell what looked good on her
and what DIDN'T. I agree with the previous noter - Tina Turner
    would have been better.

I have to agree - the halftime show was the worst. Bring back the
    marching bands!

Can you imagine what people thought, who aren't familiar with the
Indiana Jones movies? A half-time show that was basically a brawl, with
badly dressed people and lots of smoke. What an embarrassment! And a
bet most people missed that it was a plug for a new Disney attraction.

I thought Kathi Lee Gifford did a nice job with the national anthem.

So - considering how much companies pay to advertise during the
superbowl - what commercials do you remember (and like)?

My votes - the frogs (budweiser) is definately the best.

Pepsi had several I remember.... the guy trying to get his money
accepted by the soda machine, the little kid at the beach sucking on his
straw to get the last of the soda out of the bottle and sucking himself
into the bottle, the Coke/Pepsi drivers in a diner.

The Rolled-Gold Pretzel commercial with the guy from Seinfield
chasing the dog through the airport onto the plane with Lloyd Bridges
and having to parachute out was only ok, until the ending where he
lands in the Superbowl stadium. I've seen that commercial since then
and it has a different ending.

Other commercials - McDonalds, Lincoln, Dodge, Bud and bud-lite.

How do companies measure if they got their monies worth?

I would haphazard a guess however that most people have seen
at least one Indiana Jones movie. And my guess is sports
fans are more likely to be action-adventure fans than a
	non-sports fan.

It was during a time out. Had the game been going on we wouldn't have been
watching commercials.

But no I don't think anyone landed at that time and I doubt it was that actor
that actually did the jump. But the way they did it made it look very real.

It appears that what they did was to film the commercial at one point, tape
someone jumping into a stadium with something of a crowd at a 2nd point, tape
what's his name (George Castanza) walking off the field and a 3rd point, then
they had Al Michaels record the "guy just landed on the field" message.

During the time out they ran the commercial then they played the tape with a
guy landing, the actor walking off the field, and Al Michaels saying a guy just
landed. That made it look like they were coming back from a commercial and that
the guy who landed was really the actor but it was just the tape trick.

When they really came back a minute later, there was no sign of anyone having
landed and no discussion of the event so I doubt it really happened.

Not only did Jason Alexander not land on the field during the real game, but
Kathie Lee Gifford was lip-syncing the National Anthem! I also think Tony
Bennett was lip-syncing but others disagree.

Why not take the money it took to put that piece-of-we-all-know-what of
a half time show together and donate it to some worthy cause! I mean
there's really need to look at the ugliest woman on earth (La Belle) in
the most ridiculous get up ever made (even if it was worn by T Turner)
    and listen to lip-synched, un-music.

I shudder to think what the producers of this Half Time Heffer think
    the average American's IQ is.

I'm gald to hear that you thought the half-time show was less than

I don't really understand the half time show. I've never met anyone who
liked watching it on TV.

I suspect it's designed to look appealing from the stands but it looks
stupid on the small screen. But that doesn't make a lot of sense, why design
a show for such a small audience (relative to the TV audience) when every
seat is guaranteed to be sold anyway?

Since so many VIP's attend, the NFL may well be doing it for political
reasons.

.8 who hasn't seen an Indiana Jones ... and watch the superbowl?
my folks, my sister, a good portion of other family members. Though
most of my friends would recognize it. I would guess there are more
than you/half-time producers think. Even having seen the Indy movies,
this stunk as a half-time show.

    re: Rolled Gold commericial
It seemed to me that the stadium behind George when he "landed" had
very few people in it, so I would guess that it was filmed sometime
prior to the game. But, given the look on Jason Alexander's face, he
    might have done the jump.

.11 - I'm still smiling over your opinion!!

Lip-syncing - is it possible that the songs weren't lip-synced, but
that the acoustics in the stadium threw off the timing between the
lips-moving and when we heard the sound?

And I like the idea of taking the money normally spent on crummy
half-times, with megabuck stars and using that money for charity!
Anyone have ideas of who we could write to suggest this? Bring back
marching bands! At least the people in the stadium could also enjoy
halftime then, rather than being in-undated with smoke and the backside
    of props!

Thought of another commercial - Cuomo (NY) and Richards (Tx) having to
get used to the "new" changes and then eating the Doritos chips out of
    the new style bag.

Since when is halftime a thirty minute commercial?!?!?!

Let Disneyland buy a sixty-second spot like everyone else and give
halftime back to the kids across the country who practice on their

We all know what and where Disneyland is. We all love it, we'll all go

Disney didn't pay the NFL -- quite the reverse. The NFL's position is
that Disney shows always get good response; the TV ratings don't drop
    during halftime.

    Ratings, shmatings!

They may not have paid cash, but they paid *something* believe me. TV
gives nothing away for nothing! And it's an ad for Disney wether cash
was used or not. That's like saying that a sound bite of the latest
pop hit on the internet isn't advertising.

Well, you'd never make it in the TV biz, I can see.

The NFL paid Disney at least six figures for the show. The NFL was
buying Disney's track record. That's not something for nothing.
