295.0. "DUE SOUTH" by DELNI::DISMUKE () Sat Sep 17 1994 03:45

Anyone catch the 2-hour premier of Due South last night? Comments?

Kind of reminded me of that move with Arnold and Jim - Red Heat or
something (a bit tamer for television, though).

    Hi Sandy! Remember me?

Due South was actually on a few months ago as a filler movie. I
thought it was o.k. and had some potential. I loved the "wolf" that
Paul Gross' character has as a partner. Unfortunately I think they
will have to stick to a lot of typical "city folk" vs. "Outdoorsie
folk" cliches but I'll watch an episode or two.

I missed the movie when it first came out, so I was pleasantly
surprised when I watched this last week. There are some typical
stereotypes which I hope they use as comic relief and don't let get in
    the way of the story.

Nice to see Boston's own David Marciano get a role where he doesn't
    play a crazed killer!

I missed the movie, but caught the show last night. Thought it was OK

Why do the Canadians hate the guy? And why was he sent back to the

He turned in a bad Canadian cop, ie one of his own.
No one in Canada would take him after that. In fact, the only
organization that would take him was in Chicago.

I thought last night's show was terrific. It takes a lot to get me not
to watch the luscious Helen Hunt, but Due South did it. The plot was
good, the interplay between the two sets of detectives was terrific,
and the kid was smart but not smarmy, like a lot of TV kids. I could
have done without the trip through the park, but at least the bad guys
got away then. Diefenbaker (sp?) is great, too.

I like this too! I really like Diefenbacher, so does my dog Simba.
It's funny, when Deifen barks, Simba runs to the tv and watches what
    ever Diefen does.

I think it's funny how they have so many jokes that are just casually
put in the script and just come out naturally.

I hope this show continues on it's path and makes it through at least
the first cut of new shows.

Just a couple of comments about the show:

I watched it for the first time last night, and it took me about
20 seconds to tell that the show is filmed in Canada (Toronto). At the
start of the show you could see a "Canadian Tire" sign off in the distance.
You could only see it for about 2 seconds and it was out of focus, so the
untrained eye might not have seen this.

Diefenbaker was a Canadian Prime Minister in the late 50's. All I know is
that my dad saw him walking a dog outside 24 Sussex, but he forgets what kind
it was.

Mackenzie King was also a Canadian Prime Minister. His claim to fame
was that his advisors were his dog, and his dead mother.

If I spot any more Canadian things, I'll post them.

There is a two hour movie episode on this Friday. I was beginning to

295.11Due South CancelledCSC32::MA_BAKERFri Jun 02 1995 17:1314
The bad word is that "Due South" has been cancelled for next year.

This episonde was scheduled at an earlier date but was pre-empted at
    the time.

I have sent my complaint letter to CBS about the way they pre-empted
this series for everything that came along and to complain about it
being cancelled, but I am not expecting anything to come of my letter.

Interestingly, I read in the paper several months ago that this series is
highly regarded in Canada and up for a few Emmy-equivalents there, but that
did not seem to matter to CBS, either.

This is no surprise since CBS does not have any affiliates up in Canada and
even those who pick up signals from across the boarder don't really interest
American advertisers.

But given the interest, perhaps it would make sense of the CBC picked it
up.

I don't think Due South was really cancelled. CBS decided not to show
it anymore, but I believe that CTV (in Canada) intends to show it still.
The show is a Canadian production that CBS was buying.

    Mike.
295.14CSC32::MA_BAKERMon Jun 05 1995 15:0923
Is CTV on satellite? I might just have to buy a dish.

The next in the series follows up from the 2 hour episode shown last
Friday and it is scheduled this Friday on CBS.

Lucky Colorado Springs gets to have the Billy Graham Crusade instead.
So when someone who lives somewhere that gets it, sees it .... please
please please, post a really thorough synopsis. I don't want to go
through the rest of my life wondering what happened next.

My little sister is on Prodigy - unfortunately I am not - and she tells me
there is a long string of discussion about "Due South" (both Canadian and
American) and what we saw last Friday night was a much different show from
what they showed in Canada a while back.

I suppose that they are getting the USA audience prepared for the show's
demise, so it had to be different. But I for one would sure rather see
it go out with the same clever sense of humour and light hearted feel
that it has had all along.

Or maybe it was "In Your Face, CBS" for not picking it back up. I know
that is how I feel about CBS myself and I kinda told the president of
CBS entertainment just that in my letter.
295.15WMOIS::LYONS_STue Jun 06 1995 18:5611

I will tape this Friday's episode if you would like. I cna then
    forward it on.

I was really surprised at how last week's 2 hour episode went. It was
so serious compared to previous episodes. I am glad however, to see that
CBS will air the next episode because I would be pretty ticked if they
left it off where last week's episode ended.

    I will miss this show.
295.16Thanks for offering to tape itCSC32::MA_BAKERWed Jun 07 1995 16:2221
Thanks for offering to tape it. I have asked the local CBS station if
they plan to air this episode at a different time and they say they
are, but it is not in the tv section of the local newspaper, so I
don't trust them. If you could tape it, that would cover my bases,
and if they do show it, you won't need to send it. But better to ask
you to tape it and have it shown here than to not tape and not have it
shown here and then be sol. I really don't want to go through the rest
of my life wondering what happened next. The local station told me
Saturday night at 10:35pm MDT (June 10) -- FYI for anyone in Colorado
    Springs.

Not only am I going to miss "Due South", I am already having withdrawal
symptoms. But if CTV is going to continue to carry it, I will find a way
to get my fix. Either buy satellite disk or pay for cable for my brother
in NW Washington state -- I used to watch CTV in NW Washington -- or
    someway.

Maybe FOX could pick it up -- they could put it on right before "X-Files"
and Friday nights would be perfect for me .. ;-) Time to write
another letter I guess, this time to FOX.

I only started watching this show three weeks ago because I saw a preview
for the two parter and it looked good. Thought it was great and now really
regret not watching from the start - there must have been something else
on at the same time. I have enjoyed watching Paul Gross in a lot of
Canadian productions.
There was a good take off of the Diet Coke commercial where Lucky
(whatever his name is) played the construction worker that all the office
babes lusted after... except in this commercial you *think* it's going to
be the Diet Coke commercial and then when the ladies look down you see
Paul Gross in his Mounty uniform take off his hat and look up in the sky
while all the ladies swoon... it's cute. Did you get it in the States?
I hope that they continue production even if CBS decides not to buy the
future episodes. Apparently it is doing very well in England.

    June 13, 1995:

" "Due South" has gotten the nod for a second season from our neighbors
to the north, even though the show's future doesn't look bright here.
CTV, Canada's Television Network, has renewed the series, whose fish-
out-of-water story line revolves around a Canadian mountie who becomes
    a Chicago crimefighter.
The dramedy (sic), which is filmed in Toronto, was a joint venture
between CBS and CTV, with CBS footing nearly two-thirds of the show's
    production costs. "

They must be getting close because the "Victoria's Secret" 2-hour

Ray and Fraser, both apparently recovered from their gun shot wounds of the
last episode of the 1st season, and Diefenbaker are on their way for
2 weeks in the Northwest Territories to rebuild Fraser Senior's cabin.

Ray complains about how he is missing vacation in Miami for this. Fraser
says well after all Ray didn't have to go, but Fraser is glad they are
    going.

Ray has some grumpy arguments with the guy at the little airport in
Canada where they are waiting to board a small plane for the Territories.
Ray is over baggage weight and also has to leave his service revolver
at the little airport. Fraser-- "It is against the law to take a
weapon on an airplane, especially one that is not even registered in this
    country."

While they are getting checked in, there is a prisoner being unloaded at
the airport who kills the pilot and then takes over as the pilot on the
plane that Ray and Fraser are taking. Ray and Fraser and Dief are the
only passengers. Fraser calls Dief-- "We are going now. We will not be
    coming back." and they board.

The plane takes off (supposed to be 4 hour flight). Ground control
tells the "pilot" that the 2 guys are cops. "The Mountie is OK but
watch out for that other guy." Fraser figures out that the pilot is not
the pilot, that he appears to be someone who was recently in handcuffs,
there is blood on his flight suit, and the plane has been flying South for
    2 hours.

Ray figures he is a drug smuggler heading for Mexico and recounts ugly
things that would happen to cops who meet up with smugglers in Mexico.

Ray has his backup gun with him. Fraser-- "I will have to arrest you
off course once we land". They plan to overtake the pilot and land the
    plane.

The pilot bails out of the plane. Leaving Fraser to land the plane.
Fraser-- "I did read a flight manual in my grandmother's library.
There were 2 pages missing, but I'm sure it was nothing vital, and
there can't be that much difference between a Sopworth Camel and a
    small light plane".

They crash land. Fraser has a gash on his head and can't see, but he
convinces Ray that he is so familiar with the forest that he can guide
them out. (NOT!! -my comment) They walk around in a circle and come back
to the crash site. Fraser blames it on one leg being slightly shorter
than the other, so that he did not walk a straight line, and asks Ray
to measure his legs. Ray refuses. Strongly. Then Fraser decides that
it is his head injury that is making him go awry.

Back home Lieutenant Welch has been informed by the little airport guy
that the plane had gone down, there was no sign of the plane, there
was no sign of survivors. He asks to be kept informed and will have to
    inform Ray's family.

At the plane when Ray and Fraser return, the hijacker was there and
shoots at them. Ray returnes the fire, but does not hit the hijacker.
Blind Fraser stands up and says "Under order of the RMCP you are under
arrest" and gets shot at. The hijacker flees.

Meanwhile the hijacker had cleaned the plane out of supplies, so Ray
works on building a fire and they eat grubs and the like to survive.
Ray tells Fraser about how he has been camping before, his dad (Veccio
Senior) took him camping when he was a kid.

(Fraser Senior and Veccio Senior are both in this show. Fraser sees his
dad and Ray sees his dad. Fraser Senior wants Fraser to lose Ray and
go after the hijacker because "Mounties always get their man" - which
turns out NOT to be the Mountie motto - "and bring him in alive" and
he says that Ray will just hold Fraser up. Veccio Senior wants Ray to lose
Fraser and look out for #1 and the hell with anyone else in the world.
Both dead fathers pop up throughout the show with their respective
philosophies. And they also seem to see each other but not to communicate
with each other. Both sons tell the fathers off - they are not about to
abandon their friend and so on.)

Fraser is in pretty bad shape. Ray asks Dief if he will get them out if
Fraser doesn't make it. Dief also howls like a wolf. Ray-- "Sure, like you
think you are a wolf or something."

Fraser then loses the use of his legs so Ray carries him. They keep
themselves going by singing songs that they don't remember the words
to and telling each other about their childhoods. Fraser is also getting
real dehydrated and kind of muddled -- he keeps calling Ray "Steve".
Fraser can't sweat which means he is 10-15% dehydrated. At 20% you die.
Ray lets Fraser have all their water. Veccio Senior has his say about Ray
letting Fraser have all the water.

Meanwhile the hijacker is also tracking them. The hijacker still has a gun
and 2 clips of ammo. Ray had used all of his bullets when they hijacker
shot at them by the plane.

Fraser makes a bolo, a kind of sling shot thingy made with 3 big rocks
on strings. The Inuits use bolos to hunt with and can get elk using it.
Ray tries to use it in a test and throws it into the top of the trees.

Ray and Fraser get to a river, get water to drink, and then Ray tries to
inflate the rubber raft they had with them, only the 2 Seniors get into
the act again to try to convince their respective sons to do what they want
them to do, and so Ray loses the raft -- it inflates but floats off
down the river. Fraser-- "Should we get in now?" Ray-- "I don't think
right now is a good time."

Fraser is beginning to get the use of his legs back, so he can walk
some after Ray pops Fraser's back. Painful.

They make a raft out of trees that Ray cuts down with his little
hatchet and they put together with some rope and some tree roots (Fraser
suggested tht they use birch bark strips, boiled and chewed, the Inuit
women do that all the time, it is good for the teeth. Ray-- "I will
tell that to my dentist next time I see him.") - Ray wopuldn't have any
part of the boiling and chewing so they use the tree roots instead.

Ray tells Veccio Senior that he is not like him and he is glad that he
is not like him. Throughout this episode we find out a quite lot about
what a rotten person Veccio Senior must have been when Ray was a kid.

The hijacker shows up and starts shooting at them. Ray helps Fraser and
they run from cover to cover to get to the raft. Fraser's plan is to
lure the hijacker to the raft at the river and then they will capture
    him.

While they are running from cover to cover Ray tells Fraser that
his dad never did take him camping, that he wanted to go when he was 10
years old, just to spend some time with his dad, his dad finally promised
and Ray made a tent and his mother had let him use her good sheets and
everything, and he waited and waited and his dad never showed up. Ray
finally found him at the pool hall instead. Ray then went home and took
down his tent and they never talked about the camping trip again.

Ray and Fraser are pinned down at the raft. Fraser's plan-- He will
distract the hijacker while Ray uses the bolo to get the hijacker.
Ray-- "You can't see the hijacker and I can't use the bolo."
Fraser-- "I didn't say it was a good plan."

So Ray goes to get the bolo, the hijacker is shooting at him, Fraser says
"I can see" and promply knocks himself out on one of the trees of the raft.
Dief is also running to attack the hijacker.

Ray throws the bolo - he misses the hijacker. He misses by a longggg way.
    What did he hit?

The bolo hits a rocky craig overhead of the hijacker, which causes a rock
slide to come down on the hijacker.

Ray checks Fraser and Fraser can see. Fraser asks what happened and
Ray says that no one would ever believe what happened, it was a freak
    of nature.

Fraser Senior-- "You got your man." Fraser-- "We got our man."
Ray-- "Yes, we did." Fraser Senior-- "But I think he is dead."
    Fraser-- "Oh, dear."

Ray and Fraser and Dief float down the river on the raft. Ray is the
oarsman. Fraser keeps giving Ray a bad time about watch out for the
rock, watch out for the sandbar, etc. Ray finally gets Fraser to admit
that Ray does know what he is doing, and then ...

    Fraser-- "Is that a waterfall?"

    End of episode.

Late breaking news
Toronto, Canada, November 8, 1995 -- Alliance Communications Corporation
announced
today that the CBS Television Network will air 8 new one-hour episodes of the
critically
acclaimed television series Due South beginning Friday, December 8, 1995 at
8:00 p.m.
EST.

Read the official announcement from Alliance

Due South is a Canadian-produced hour long action-adventure, comedy-drama
about a
by-the-book Mountie assigned (along with his deaf, lip-reading wolf) to the
Canadian
Consulate in Chicago, who in his spare time assists the Chicago PD (via his
new best
friend, a street-wise tough Chicago detective) in solving various crimes. In
Canada it's
currently shown Thursday at 8:00 pm (eastern) on CTV in Canada. In the United
States
CBS will broadcast the second season of Due South starting December 8, 1995
at 8:00
pm (eastern).

The first episode of the second season will be aired in Canada on November 9,
1995 on
CTV at 8:00 eastern. If you live outside of Canada or outside of the eastern
time zone
you should check your local listings for when the new episodes will be aired.

The first three episodes will be:

     #123 - "North" Nov 9, 1995
     #124 - "Vault" Nov 16, 1995
     #125 - "The Witness" Nov 23, 1995

The above was taken off one of the internet web sites - there seem to
be quite a few which you can find by doing a net search and putting
in Due South (this one is from Brian and Sandy MacGowan's page)

All right!! Now I can watch my program 2 times on Thursday on CTV feeds (I
found the 2nd feed, it is later than it used to be) and 3 more times on
Fridays on CBS feeds. If I add taping to this, my fix becomes unlimited!!

Maybe all of our cards and letters did amount to something, even if they
never got answered. (Not to mention that CBS needs all the help it can
    get right now.)

I can still continue to put in synopses of the episodes behind
spoilers warnings, if anyone wants me to, or we can wait for CBS
to show us what Ray and Fraser do each week.

CTV did not show the 2nd episode of the 2nd season after all tonight.
They showed a rerun of last season's episode entitled "A Cop, A Mountie,
    and a Baby" instead.

Next week's schedule has the Beatles Anthology program instead of "Due
    South".

Has anyone in Canada heard if CTV is waiting for CBS to show the season
opener before CTV continues on airing the new season or anything like
    that?

Spectacular and moving episode Friday night. Great performance by
David Marciano, who got to show his full range of acting skills. This
episode did have a few quirky, humorous moments (mostly thanks to
Diefenbaker), but the serious tone was appropriate for the topic. I
also enjoyed learning a bit more about Ray's background. The writers
did an excellent job of tying in last year's episode with Zucco to this
installment. Zucco is a villian we will see again.

The aspect I liked about "The Deal" from last year (that CBS repeated a
week ago so that viewers were set up for "Juliette is Bleeding" this
week) was that it was one of the 1st episodes to really start developing
Ray as a character in the series. David Marciano has been nominated for
a Gemini Award for Best Actor in a Dramtic Series for "The Deal".
We've actually been learning quite a bit about Ray and his past this
    season from several episodes.

"Juliette" was a very good episode. Nice continuity, as always. However,
like "Victoria's Secret" it does bring out the darker side of "due SOUTH".

I will miss Louie, though. It will be interesting to see how the
tension between Ray and Huey will work out without Louie.

"Juliette" is the 7th of this season's new episodes. I have not heard
yet if CBS has decided to get more than the first 8 (of the 13 CTV is
producing) that CBS ordered for this year. For US viewers, I hope so.
Letters to CBS will help. Weekly ratings have ranged from #53-#65 so far
    this year in the US.

To send mail to CBS about the series write:
    CBS Entertainment
    175 Fifth Ave.
    Suite 2307
    New York, New York

To send mail to Due South, or any member of the cast, write to this
    address:
    DUE SOUTH
    940 Lansdowne Ave
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada
    M6H 3Z4

You can also send comments to the cast and crew via e-mail:
duesouth@inforamp.net. Direct the comments to the proper person(s)
on the subject line. These comments do not go to CBS, or CTV,
or Alliance Productions, however, so hit CBS directly with support
letters. All e-mail to this address does get answered; it might take
them a couple weeks to answer you however, since they get over 100
pieces of mail weekly, since they started publishing this address at
the end credits of each week.

    CBS'S WEB SITE IS:
    http://www.cbs.com/
Visit here to see the complete CBS line-up, plus links to several CBS
show's Web Pages. (There is a really poor (IMHO of course) CBS home
page for "due SOUTH" -- 2 pictures and nothing else.)

To see World Wide Web pages for "due SOUTH enter one of the following
URLS into your Mosaic or Lynx Browser:
    http://www.interlog.com/~macgowan/DueSouth.html
    http://www.usask.ca/~turner/duesouth.html

Another home page is Hanzi's and it is good and thorough. I don't have
the address for this, but an internet search on due south finds it readily.

I still watch "due SOUTH" on Thursdays on CTV and if CBS does not pick up
the rest of the season, I can and will still post synopses. (Until the
CTV uplink feeds go digital, that is.)

I have been nosing around in some internet home pages and found a
notice as of March 1 that CBS has ordered an addiional 5 episodes
for season 2, bring the total to 18.

Also, CBS will be showing NCAA basketball playoffs for this week and
next week, but "due SOUTH" will be back March 29.

(CBS doing this is a good thing for me because I will lose CTV satellite
feeds very soon. CTV is going digital and will also be doing proprietary
encryption, so CTV will not be available in the US. NTV (the Newfoundland
CTV affiliate) also goes digital at end of April. Sigh)

Hi,

As knowone it seems, has replied from the UK I thought I would!

We have had Due South here in the UK for a couple of years (I think)
I really enjoy the show and can't wait each week for the next one!

I enjoyed the episode with Lesley Nielson, the train and the girl!

I think the BBC may have teamed up with Paul Gross, because he's
certainly been over here alot in the last year, appearing on all
our chat shows with Dief!

Cheers,
Marina

The BBS has joined CTV (Canada) and a few other countries (France is
one) to finance a 3rd season of Due South. It started production
yesterday and will be shown in Canada starting in September. Paul
Gross is back as the Mountie, but David Marciano will only be making
guest appearances as Ray. And.... a different dog will be playing
    Deifenbaker.
