262.0. "Dr.Quinn, Medicine Woman" by GRANMA::JBOBB (Janet Bobb dtn:339-5755) Thu Jun 09 1994 04:18

Couldn't find a note on it - if I missed it - moderators please feel
    free to move this...

I started watching Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman sometime this year.
Never saw the beginning episode. I know the general gist of how Dr.
Mike ended up with the kids, but how/when did Sully appear, why did she
    move out west, etc?

Could someone fill me in on the beginning details?

    thanks!

Janet - I'll do my best to fill you in since I've watched since the
    first episode.

Dr. Quinn was a doctor with her father in Boston. He died, and she saw
an ad that a town in Colorado needed a doctor. She applied and got the
position. Needless to say, the town folk gave her a hard time - they
thought that they were getting a doctor named Michael Quinn. Seems
that Horace - the telegraph operator - thought that the other operator
put the middle initial A on the end of the name, so he left it off.
Anyway, nobody wanted to befriend her except the kids mother who ran
the hotel. They became really good friends, then she got bit by a
rattle snake and died. Dr. Quinn needed a place to stay and was
looking at the bulletin board in the general store. For some reason
Loren was giving her a hard time - I think because she put a sign
up saying if anyone needed a doctor, she was there. Sully came to her
rescue, they got to talking, and he said that he had a place that she
could stay at. It was a cabin that he had built for him and his wife,
but since she died in childbirth he hadn't lived there. Anyway, after
the kids mother died, they all went to live in the cabin. Sully and
she became friends, and the rest is history. They've had their ups and
downs, so next season should be good!

Oh yea, at first Dr. Mike's mother objected to her going out to
Colorado, but Dr. Mike got the flu when an epidemic was going around
and almost died, the kids sent a telegraph to her. By the time she got
there, Dr. Mike was fine. Her mother got to know the kids, loosened up
and wasn't so snobby anymore, and everything worked out. A while
later, the mother was real sick, so Dr. Mike and the kids went back to
Boston to see her. She ended up being OK - of course thanks to Dr.
Mike. The doctor thought she had cancer, but it ended up just being
some food poisoning from some fish that she ate. Anyway, of course Dr.
Mike falls for one of her mother's doctors, and in the meantime Sully
shows up because he missed her so much. The kids try to teach him how
to dance and woo her the way they do in Boston. The doctor asks Dr.
Mike to marry him, Sully gets bull because he overheard, and he leaves
to go back to Colorado. Dr. Mike comes home, the kids tell her Sully
left, and she rushes out to the train. They profess their love for
each other, and Dr. Mike gets the kids and they head back out to
Colorado a couple of days later. When she gets back, Sully greets her
and they have their first real kiss - right in front of all the town
folks. That's how last season ended.

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know!

262.2thanks!GRANMA::JBOBBJanet Bobb dtn:339-5755Fri Jun 10 1994 07:239
thanks! I never could figure out how Dr. Mike and Sully met - figured
it was out west, but then they would make references to boston... and I
couldn't quite figure Sully coming from Boston.

Have they explained much of his past - his knowledge and friendship
with the indians, and the references by towns people that he's part
    indian?

Next season ought to be interesting!
262.3DELNI::DISMUKESat Jun 11 1994 02:3213
When his wife died (she was Loren Brey's daughter) he pretty much
secluded himself away from the townsfolk. He lived in the woods,
became friends with the indians, etc. Loren blamed Sully for the death
of the daughter and baby - I guess he figured if she had never become
pregnant, she wouldn't have died in childbirth...he may be right - 8^)

Did you see the episode where Dr. Mike's first love returns from the
"grave"? I knew she'd stay with Sully, but she sure made him squirm
    (though unintentionally).

they died, and he moved out west.

re: .3 - the episode where Dr. Mike's first fiance (thought to be dead)
    showed up.....

this was the last show of this season, and it's the one that got me
thinking about how Sully and Dr. Mike got together. The next week
reruns were being shown and there was a Halloween episode, where the
ghost of Sully's wife is haunting Dr. Mike and the house. This is the
episode where I finally said," I'm gonna ask the notes file..."

I like this series (wish I had watched it from the start). They do
tackle some upsetting issues. However, I would find it hard to live in
the town with some of the characters - Jake and Loren show up to be
basically good people, but they certainly get pulled along by the crowd
very easily and that's upsetting (but I suppose it's very close to the
truth). I did like the story line where Horace and Myra finally get
    married.

Not sure how the romance between Dr. Mike and Sully will go - it always
seems like TV romances are best while they are in the making, once the
characters get together the plot usually suffers. Hope this doesn't
    happen here!

There's not much activity here...must not be alot of Dr. Quinn fans
    :-).

I'm asking this for my wife:

In the two latest episodes the character Colleen is being played by
a different actress. Does anyone know why this change was made?

262.8SSGV01::GRANTMargo, DTN 381-6192Tue Jan 31 1995 08:033
Well, I don't have the answer, but I sure had the same question! I noticed
that they refilmed the closing credits with the new actress, so it must be
permanent, but to me, it's a loss. I really liked the 1st actress.
262.9I was going to ask!GRANPA::JBOBBJanet Bobb dtn:339-5755Wed Feb 01 1995 08:2919
.6 beat me to the question, too!

The actress has been different for at least the last 3 episodes. I
didn't watch it over the holidays because of schedules and reruns.
First show I watched after the holidays, I did see the opening credits
and noticed the addition of the new actress and the ommission of the
old "colleen", so was a little prepared for it.

I think this actress has ok skills, but with the physical differences
(different hair, etc.) it still takes some getting used to!

I liked this past weeks episode with "Sam" wanting to climb the
mountain, Though, when she gave Dr. Mike the R.W.Emerson poetry book, I
had a feeling as to why she was climbing the mountain.

So, do you think this year's season ender will be the wedding or some
physical disaster to prevent the wedding?

    janetb.
262.10Where art thou, Colleen?NEMAIL::MILLERSat Feb 04 1995 11:5612
Count me as another voice in the Colleen dilemma. Anyone know of how
we can find out what happened? There was no previous scuttlebut in TV
Guide or similar mags as far as I know. The last episode I recall
seeing her in was with the new boy in town and Colleen's struggle with
being well-developed before her friends; there was a parallel plot with
the newsletter editor and discovering a lump on her breast.

Is the new Colleen the same actress who played the step-daughter in
"The Trials of Rosie O'Neill"? I know I've seen her before.

As for the season-ending, my money is on the wedding. Can we expect
    Matthew's wedding during February sweeps?

I am really bad with names (as you will soon find out) but here goes -

She was on a short-run show last year ("The Long Road Home"?-was that
title?) about a family that had gone down to South Carolina for the summer
to visit the grandparents. Had a "Prince of Tides" kind of feel about it. It
starred Terrence Knox, Alec (Desparado-can't remember his last name), the
actress from the first Raiders (Karen Allen?) and an older actor - Robert
Farnsworth? I hope somebody else can fix up these names because now it's
gonna bug me too!

Thanks Chelsea - I debated with the Robert/Richard thing and I think you
are right. I'm still not sure about Alec - I thought it was Mcsomething,
but McCord doesn't sound right. Oh well - I liked the show and was
sorry it didn't last longer.

262.16The Colleen QuestionNEMAIL::MILLERTue Mar 07 1995 06:594
I read in TV Guide this week that the original Colleen left the show
amicably as a result of some disagreements -- or some such thing.
Apparently, when asked the network will not say anything more.

Has anyone heard anything more?

I, like a previous noter, saw her for the last time in the episode where
she was being teased because her breasts were growing. Now, finding a new
actress with no explanation, I have the odd feeling of protectiveness and
betrayal on her behalf. Did I miss an episode where there was *any*
explanation of this, even a lame one? I think if they hadn't changed the
credits by reshooting the same scenes with the new actress, I wouldn't have
this strong gut feel. It feels like they tried to basically erase the first
Colleen out of existence. They should have just used new scenes with the new
Colleen instead.

What's even weirder about the original Colleen leaving is that she was
back for Sat. night's episode, with yet another new beginning. I

original Colleen left) or did she come back?

I believe that the episode to which you refer was a repeat of an
earlier episode. That's what my TV listing noted, anyway. The
networks tend to show re-runs once "sweeps" month is over -- February
    is a "sweeps" month.

262.20RepeatALFA1::ACQUAFRESCATake me to the beach, please!!!!Tue Mar 14 1995 06:545
    Was it a repeat? I didn't even see the little (R). Plus, I hadn't
seen that episode and I though I had seen them all. I still like the
    original Colleen better.

262.22nice wedding!GRANPA::JBOBBJanet Bobb dtn:339-5755Fri May 26 1995 15:3417
Gee.. no one has mentioned the wedding!

I finally was able to watch the tape of it last night. I liked the
episode, though wondered how I would have acted towards my mother if
she acted the way Dr.Mikes'Mom did....

I liked that the episode didn't just marry them at the end, but we got
to "attend" the reception too. it must be nice to live someplace with
no bugs! :^) That's all I could think about when I saw the tables of
food laid out for the reception... any outdoor party I have always
seems to have more bees and flies than guests!

What year is it supposed to be for this episode? Trying to figure out
how soon it is before Custard meets his demise. I liked Jake's..."I
think this bench would be better over here...."

262.24Baseball episode - goodGRANPA::JBOBBJanet Bobb dtn:339-5755Thu Oct 05 1995 20:3821
Did anyone else catch last week's episode (9/30) where the town invites
a traveling baseball team to play, as a way of making money?

It was a "lighter" show, no great conflict, other than the usual
personality conflicts. And had some pretty funny moments.

My favorite - the town is putting together a team to challange the
"Pro's" and they are trying to come up with a name. Brian suggests some
type of bird (eagle, hawk.. can't remember now) and the response is "A
bird? You can't name a team after a BIRD!". (being in the Balt. area,
this got an extra laugh). Another suggestion is the Colorado
Rockies.... everyone in the room pauses then gives it a big ...naaaaah...

And, Hank may be absent, but he's not forgotten. Someone mentioned him
and the response was "Well he's not right now is he...". Any know
what's going on with Jake? He's usually in most of the town scenes.

Overall, I liked the episoe. I'm glad to have an occassional rest from
    the usual traumas they have.

Dr. Mike goes out into the woods with Cloud Dancing, to help Scully,
they take the wagon. Scully has crawled from his orignal spot, but they
find him. His bleeding has stopped due to some herb he put on it, but
he also has a broken ankle. They are in the process of setting the leg
when the soldiers show up and drag cloud dancing away, after roughing
him up and little, pushing Dr. Mike around and having scully yell at
them. Cloud Dancing does get a good hit in the face to the head soldier
guy. So - left in the woods - Dr. Mike sets and splints the leg and
they head off to the wagon, she making comments about how it's been a
while since they had an adventure in the woods. Of course, as they
reach the wagon, she goes into labor. At first they think they can make
it back to town, but her water breaks. So out of the wagon, onto the
ground with scully looking a little green around the gills. Delivery
has the normal tv ups and downs. funny part - she's comforting him at
one point saying everything will be ok and he's doing fine, she's not
abigail, with her hands on his cheeks. A contraction comes and she just
about pulls his face skin off. A problem with the embilical cord
causes a scare, with her yelling at scully to cut the cord so the baby
can come out and him not wanting to do it. He does, baby comes out
fine. I think I remember it being a girl. Everyone is fine.

In the meantime - the "men" are out looking for scully with no luck.
When they get back they find out that Dr. Mike is also missing now, so
they head back out again. The woman - Dorothy, Dr.Mike's sisters,
Myra and Grace also go out to look - with Mom protesting the whole time
about her daughters going. Horace is also upset with Myra going.

While everyone is going - Horace has an attack of some sort - the dr.
and banker take him to the young doctor from Boston. At first the Dr.
treats him with medicine, but when horace gets worse, he has to
operate for gall stones. Colleen helps. Operation turns out ok, Dr. is
pleased with himself (very relieved). Horace is upset with Myra when
she gets back, saying he had to go through this by himself and she's
    never there for him.

All search parties get back with no luck and are going to head out
again when Sully, Dr. Mike and baby show up in wagon. He's driving,
she's sitting in front seat with him. Everyone gushes about the baby.

final scenes - Myra decides to visit her sister, telling horace they
need time apart to help the relationship. Banker is kissing up to new
Dr. as a possible for his spa clinic. Sully tells Dr. Mike he's not
giving up on the Indians, even though he was fired as Indian agent.
    More gushing about baby.

No news on cloud dancing but they had previews of next year which show
sully saying he's going after cloud dancing, them together in a train,
a train wreck with the town gathering supplies to help and Dr. Mike
    looking/screaming for sully.
