183.0. "Babylon 5" by HYLNDR::SCHUETZ (SQOIS NAS Integration Project Leadr) Tue Oct 26 1993 04:42

    I didn't see another topic for Babylon 5, a sci-fi series to start
    in January, 1994. Anyways, people have been asking when the pilot
    will air again.

    In the Boston area, the B5 pilot movie (which won an Emmy for Special
    Effects, almost unheard of for a pilot), will show again tonight,
    Monday October 25, 1993 at 8:00 PM on Channel 38.

    Anyone interested should check out MEDDLE::ALT-TV-BABYLON-5
    conference. It's interesting in that the Creator and Producer and
    Primary writer of the series (jms) is an active participant in the
    Internet dialogue, through GENIE.
183.2Hoping for the best, expecting the worstTNPUBS::NAZZAROPig man - half man, half pig!Thu Oct 28 1993 08:285
    One can only hope that the series turns out better than the incredibly
    lame pilot. I was extremely disappointed in both the writing and the
    acting. Reminded me of a weak episode of Space: 1999.

183.3TV Guide gave it one starRAGMOP::KEEFEThu Oct 28 1993 09:4811
    I agree--dreadful. The acting was particularly dull. The captain, the
    security chief, Tamlyn Tomita as Number One (?) --yawn to the lot of
    them. Peter J*** (ex of Hill St Blues?) as Lando of the Bozo haircut
    almost managed to rise above the quality of the script.

    And it won an Emmy for special effects? I must have missed something.

    Spoiler, though who could possibly care...

    And after all that rigmarole, we never even got to see the molten-metal
    critter in the funny suit! What a tease.

Some previews were shown at WorldCon. Tamlyn has been replaced.
Judging from the two shows previewed (just first acts of each), the
writing is excellent. The lead actor still seems flat to me, but
I think he'll work out.

I checked as carefully as I could in VTX to find a Babylon 5
conference and found no listing--despite the one listed in an earlier
note on MEDDLE. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I've
created a Babylon 5 conference on our node:

CLOSUS::BABYLON5

Here is my entry in the VTX registry:

This conference has been created for discussion of the FOX TV series
Babylon 5. Appropriate topics include discussion of series episodes,
series personalities, technical wizardry used on Babylon 5, posts from
the Internet Babylon 5 newsgroups, and similar subjects.

I've entered the FAQ from the Internet, as well as some general
information on Internet ftp sites, etc.

Everyone's welcome!

    Your not stepping on any toes. Feel free to cross-post any info from
    your file to here.

    I've thought the same thing. I think you'll have to look into the
    Babylon 5 notesfile to find out what the status is...

    Acording to the note traffic. This show has been picked up for another
    season and is moving briskly up on ds9 in the ratings. It could be
    a real ratings race in just a few weeks.

183.10better than expectedBEDAZL::MAXFIELDSat Apr 02 1994 07:599
    I resisted this show at first (read mediocre reviews), figured
    ST:TNG and DS9 were enough to follow. But after watching a couple
    of B5 episodes, I think it's as good and possibly better than
    DS9, at least in terms of special effects, and in the characters
    (I only like Quark and Odo on DS9; at least B5 looks like it
    has a few more likeable/interesting characters).

If you only know this series from it's pilot give it another look. It's much
improved from the pilot and is getting steadily better. I think it's now
better than ST:DS9 and as good overall as ST:TNG. It's certainly much better
science fiction and has excellent basics and a grand five year plan.
