    Here are three conferences that are related to Television. I just
    thought I'd pass this information along. I'm sure there are more
    but here are the ones I am aware of:

    NOTED::STAR_TREK - I'm not sure if this one covers Star Trek:The Next
    Generation or not

    ROCKS::UK_TV - Television showen in the United Kingdom

    EOT::TV - general Television

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Update: EOT::TV is dead. (I don't know whether you kind moderators are
    willing to let this become *the* "TV" conference.)

    Other (quasi-)related conferences:

    PROSE::MST3K - for discussion of the Comedy Central cable channel's
    "Mystery Science Theater 3000".

    SPOCK::SHERLOCK_HOLMES - about Holmes, of course, but there's a topic
    on the BBC Holmes series (currently being aired on cable's Arts &
    Entertainment channel).

    [The following I gleaned from the conferences list; I haven't checked
    on them lately to see if they're still active.]

    MISERY::ABC_SOAPS (soap operas, ABC network)

    AIADM::ANOTHER_WORLD (specific soap opera)

    BROKE::SANTA_BARBARA (specific soap opera)

    SCHOOL::DOOL (specific soap opera)

    Regarding this becomeing *the* TV conference, it can become whatever
    the participants (to a degree) want it to be. When we started this
    file it was meant as an alternative not a replacement. I miss EOT::TV
    and especially the ::MOVIES conference myself.

    Thanks for the info on the other 'related' files, I've added several to
    my notebook.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  Here are two more related conferences:

UPSAR::CABLE_TV Mostly discussion of business and consumer issues, but also
some discussion of cable-only programs and networks.

FOGGYR::BROADCASTING Covers both radio and TV; a few discussions about TV
programs.

Also, the STAR_TREK conference covers all three series (original, The Next
Generation, Deep Space Nine) and the movies.

I checked as carefully as I could in VTX to find a Babylon 5
conference and found no listing--despite the one listed in an earlier
note on MEDDLE. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I've
created a Babylon 5 conference on our node:

CLOSUS::BABYLON5

Here is my entry in the VTX registry:

This conference has been created for discussion of the FOX TV series
Babylon 5. Appropriate topics include discussion of series episodes,
series personalities, technical wizardry used on Babylon 5, posts from
the Internet Babylon 5 newsgroups, and similar subjects.

I've entered the FAQ from the Internet, as well as some general
information on Internet ftp sites, etc.

Everyone's welcome!

    HI - Does anyone know if there is an Internet mailing list or WWW
    address or somesuch for the UK tv show Dr Who? The notes conference on
    the Dr has been very quiet lately, and I'm looking for someone to talk
    to!

    Many thanks

I'm pretty sure there's an Internet newsgroup on Dr. Who. Check it out
using your favorite newsgroup reader (VNEWS, XRN, Mosaic etc.).

    Joyce, how do you access them?

    You need an account on the Internet. Digital does have some accounts
    but almost all of DEC's are protected by 'firewalls'. You can send and
    recieve mail messages at DEC but you can't access other information.

    Once you have and account on the Internet either on a home computer or
    a certain type of account here, you read them kinda like notes.

    I have access to them via my account at school.

    Actually, all you need is a newsreader (if you have DECwindows, check
    out XRN or, for motif, MXRN, look in the UFP::XRN notesfile for
    pointers to these kits), and a list of servers (UPSAR::NEWS-BACKBONE, I
    believe the list in there). Call up the newsreader, configure it to
    point at local news server and voila! Access to newsgroups galore.

    If you are behind one of DECs firewalls, you may have trouble receiving
    mail, especially to hidden nodes, but I have no problem sending and
    receving mail to my regular cluster account and I have no problem
    reading news from my hidden standalone.

    Careful, though, newsgroups can get habit forming. :) Also, be
    prepared for a generally less polite crowd than can be found in here.
    Internet and the Usenet Newsgroups have no Personnel Policies and
    Guidelines. The old "Valuing Differences" don't float out there.
    Basically, if you think SOAPBOX can be bad, you ain't seen nothing yet.

    However, with a good newsreader, like MXRN, you can easily skip over
    articles (and authors) you don't care to bother reading. Kinda Next
    Unseen en masse. And it's kinda fun.

    I'm not a News Professional, I just play one on TV.

    Cheers,

    kim

If you don't have a workstation, use VNEWS ... see the notesfile (I think
it's CLO::VNEWS) for info on how to get the kit.

Re: .8

	You don't need an account on the Internet (actually mean an
	account on a system that has Internet access :-), you don't
	even need to be running the Internet protocols. That's because
	most all of the USENET newsgroups are routed inside of Digital,
	and as .9/.10 said, you just need either DECnet or TCP/IP on your
	system (or cluster) and know the name/address of a USENET server
	(along with a NEWS reader) to plug in.

	The conference UPSAR::News-Backbone used to have posted the most
	up to date list of NEWS servers, and also pointers to various
	news readers for ULTRIX, DEC OSF/1, OpenVMS, DOS, etc (and various
	flavors of readers from command line, to screeen menu, to full
	blown Motif/X11 Windows).

	Press SELECT (or KP7) now to add the conference to your notebook.
