1259.1Faith of the CenterDELNI::MCCAULEYWed Aug 14 1996 14:1861
A wonderful articulatation of the Faith behind the center.

    From the Fall/Winter Brochure

What makes Rowe Special?

The foundation of the faith that underlies and supports the work of Rowe
Camp and Conference Center is not often articulated. Indeed, since each
person has his or her own sense of what that faith is, it has seemed wise to
let it be. Words can only point to the reality they represent.

Many of our workshop leaders are able to give voice to both the ineffable
mystery behind our existence, and the concrete problems we are facing on the
planet. They speak what needs to be spoken with a strength that touches us
deeply. We are proud of offer a forum for them to share their wisdom with all
who join us here.

It's easy to forget about wisdom, to get caught up in the daily business of
how much we are ahead or behind, of how our buildings are doing, of whether we
have enough money to hire another staff person, or how we interact with each
other. This is the day-to-day drama of our lives, and too often the sole
focus of our responsibilities.

It is easy to forget that we share something vital, something profound.
Though we rarely speak of this love of wisdom, it pervades our lives.
Perhaps we fear it isn't cool, or sophisticated, to articulate something so
tender and gentle. But it is pervasive. It underlies so much of what happens
here every day. It is part of our magic, one of the conernestones or Rowe.
Another cornerstone is a faith in human beings and a recognition of the
fundamental beauty and goddness of people. We are willing to see people not
just in the context of our daily lives, but in the larger context of a greater
beauty, the context of life on Earth and the beauty of creation. The only
proper response to this beauty may be to fall on our knees in awe, in praise
and in thanksgiving. To rejoice. And to realize this beauty extends into the
entire universe.

When we stop to listen and to see, we find that Rowe is a place where this
beauty flows freely. It is another part of our magic. We, too, find it hard
to pause, to take a deep breath, to allow ourselves to see this magic that is
everywhere.

Perhaps this is why people love it here at Rowe. We provide a little space
and our guests give themselves a little time from their day-to-day lives. It
doesn't take much, it's just around the corner, just down the road, or in the
eye of the person across the table from us at lunch. Perhaps it would be
better if it were more mystical, more mysterious, less common, but it isn't.
It is everywhere. We take it in every time we breathe in and every time we
breath out we send it back out into the universe.

Perhaps it would be better if this faith were to remain implicit, unspoken. A
painter, unable to articulate his or her work would be wise perhaps to point
to the paintings on the wall. In our case we can only point to the exquisite
experience that take place here in the conference room, in the farmhouse
living room, in the chapel, over our sumptuous meals, and in our relation to
the forest that surrounds us on three sides and the exquisite little vilage
that bounds us on the fourth.

We invite you to join us in experiencing the profound connections people make
here with themselves, to each other, and to nature. Whatever this mysterious
thing is, we have it. There is a magic here, wise, beautyful, undeniable. We
invite you to join us.

    John,

Liberal Christians would feel comfortable in all of the seminars. the
camp has a pluralistic approach to spirituality. Rowe is probably the
most non traditional of the local UU Camps and Conference Centers.

Ferry Beach, and Star Island are probably a bit more traditional.

    John,

I don't think you would enjoy the conference center. I would recommend
that those believing in the innerrancy of the Bible not attend. That
is why I also included the faith statement of the center. Any who
agree with the Faith Statement will have an excellent experience.

    Patricia:

I realize this is your outreach you are inviting people to. This list
shows some practical seminars I'm sure would be beneficial to
individuals. Some of course I don't see benefit but that isn't for me
    to say...that's just me.

Are you familiar with Congress 96? I went to Congress back in 1990 I
believe. It was held in the Prudential Center area...Hines Auditorium
but not sure exactly where. Even though you do not believe in the God
breathing of scripture, this conference would give a clerer persective
on Biblical issues so you could know the adversary better.

1259.9The bond within this file!DELNI::MCCAULEYThu Aug 15 1996 16:2034
    Jack,

I put this entry in, not in an attempt at outreach, but because I Love
Rowe camp and Conference Center. It has impacted me profoundly.

I was amazed at the Conference's Faith statement when I read it,
because it is amazingly consistent with my Faith beliefs.

I know that these kinds of seminars are offered in a number of
different places. These seminars can push our envelopes quite a bit.
I know they push my envelope. I believe in pushing myself with these
kinds of experiences. I also know that if I were going to participate
in some of those kinds of seminars, that I would want to make sure I
did it in a safe place, where their is some kind of quality assurance.

Rowe, for me, is that kind of safe place. I offered the list of
seminars here, because I want people who may be looking for some of
those seminars to know they exist.

I also want to share my excitement at the fact that I am going to spend
next week at Rowe's Kindred Spirits camp. It is a very appropriate
name. I do feel very much a kindred spirit with many in this file. I
even feel somewhat of a kindred spirit in here with many who seem
    initially very different than I.

I have made a commitment to try to live my life in accordance with my
Faith. I believe that is the bond that unites us all in here,
regardless of what our belief structure is. What we are all strugling
with is how that commitment to live our Faith impacts our relationships
with each other and with others. How does our commitment to live our
Faiths impact our relationships with those of other Faiths.
