1227.0. "Les Miserables" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Psalm 85.10) Fri Mar 29 1996 14:44

I recently enjoyed the 10 year anniversary concert of "Les Miserables,"
the musical version of the classic by Victor Hugo, presented on PBS. The
event was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in London in October 1995, I
think, and was shown recently 3 or 4 times during the local pledge drive
period.

At first, the music seemed a little operatic to me. But as I became
accustomed to it, the recurring themes became remarkably memorable.
I still hear them playing in my head occasionally, now many days later.

The prayer of Valjean for Marius' life is particularly moving.

Did anyone else see this production? Any thoughts about either the book
or the musical?

Shalom,
Richard

    Les Miserables is one of my all time favorites! It's not a good vs.
    evil story. It's the letter of the Law vs. the Spirit of the Law. In
    many ways it is a metaphor for today's Christian community in the US.

    Verily. It is also a story that examines the high price of love and
    bitterness, of compassion and zeal.
