1217.0. "Presidential Considerations" by CNTROL::DGAUTHIER () Tue Feb 13 1996 12:13

Well, with the Iowa caucus behind us and the NH primary next week, I
suppose it's time for everyone to think about who they're going to
vote for president. Who would you vote for and why? Which candidate
best represents christian values? Should he get your vote? (I say
"he" because I'm not aware of any women running at this time)

re Note 1217.0 by CNTROL::DGAUTHIER:

It's not that I like Clinton very much, and it's not that I
dislike Dole or Alexander, but I'll probably vote for Clinton
because I dislike Newt Gingrich, and even more so the
"freshman Republicans", whom I feel would be countered by
Clinton but not by any likely Republican.

Yeah, it's a lousy reason to vote for somebody, but that's
the way recent elections seem to have gone.

(At least I don't feel as bad as I did in 1980, when one of
the few truly decent people we've had as President was
attacked by a person for whom, by virtue of his profession,
"character" had a *very* different meaning!)

I'm not sure who I'll vote for in the primaries. Well, actually, I am
sure I won't vote for Clinton in any election.

Concerning "Christian values" you know there's hardly any agreement in
this forum on Christian values. But if I scrutinize the candidates in
terms of apparent honesty and commitment to orthodox Christian morality
I think Buchanan passes the test best. However, I dislike some of his
apparent mindset on trade. There really isn't a devout Protestant in
    the race.

I'll probably vote for Buchanan or Keyes in the primaries but it depends
on how the race shapes up over time. I enjoy having a choice and have
begun to think strategically about how my vote may impact the outcome.

I'm from Tennessee originally and I can't recall anything Alexander did
as Govenor that would corroborate his present rhetoric. Of course he
had an entrenched Democratic legislature with which to contend.

I'm with Bob Fleischer.

I'll probably end up voting for Clinton, who really doesn't represent me.
But the others represent me even less.

Shalom,
Richard

I have to admire Buchanan for having the guts to stand Pro-Life. It's
probably tantamount to political suicide, but I admire his conviction
none the less. In all reality, given the popularity behind the
Pro-Choice side of the issue, there's nothing a Pro-Life president could
do about this anyway. But someone with enough guts to stand up and
hold is ground on something like this tell me a lot about his
    character.

I believe Dole has the most experience in how to deal Washington
politics. And despite what Forbes has to say, that's an important
asset. I also believe Dole's heart is in the right place. He's a
negotiator and a compromiser and is very very well networked. He could
get a lot done. He's probably also a "closet" pro-lifer.

Graham seems to be like sitting somewhere between Dole and Buchanan.
He's got some good points, and experience to boot. Maybe I'll vote for
    him.

I like Fobes flat tax idea but his mudraking and money flaunting in
unbecomming of a President. He also lacks any political experience and
the White House is NOT the place for OJT.

    Don't know much about Alexander.

For now, the Republican primary is the thing to look at. The
democratic primary is all but settled. So I'll register Independent
and vote in the Republican primary.

Where's Ross when you need him? :-)
