It's very difficult work.  Some of the people are so ill (mentally).

But almost all the guests are appreciative of the work done by their
hosts.

I've eaten at the local soup kitchen on several occasions.  I, too, believe
the people who dine there are grateful for a hot meal, perhaps the one real
meal of the day.  And yes, many are besieged by mental illness.

I took my family to eat our Christmas meal at the soup kitchen one year.
What a contrast it was to our all too customary consumer-oriented holiday
habits.  Oh, there was plenty of turkey and all the traditional trimmings.
There were plenty of smiles and warm greetings.  What there was not a lot
of was torn wrapping paper.
