It's about time for another lightweight topic. Here's one in which you
may share riddles, quiz questions and curiosities.

What do Francis of Assisi and El Greco have in common?
        ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^

These are not the names they were born with. The names were acquired and
refer, strangely enough, to a national identity:

Francis, the Frenchman (Actually, his mother was French)

El Greco, the Greek

El Greco was an artist.

According to the Bible, what was the first thing God made holy?

1087.9 My guess would be ...VNABRW::BUTTONAnother day older and deeper in debtTue Jul 11 1995 07:3622
	Re: 1087.8 Richard

	> ..... what was the first thing God made holy?

	If the question were vocalized:

	- God first *wholly* created the universe.

	- But He made the Earth *holey* (so that the waters could spring up
	   from the deep).

	- *Ho Li* was trading in silks around 3500 BC (outside of the sphere
	   of early Hebrew writings).

I would postulate that the first *holy* item was either the famous
tree in Eden, or the sin which was its -- indirect -- fruit.

	:-) :-) :-) :-)

	Greetings, Derek.

> ^^^^

It depends on which version of the story you are reading.

And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of
every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall
	be male and female.
					Genesis 6:19 (RSV)

Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his
mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and
his mate; and seven pairs of the birds of the air also, male and
female, to keep their kind alive on the face of all the earth.
					Genesis 7:2-3 (RSV)

Why the discrepency? According to Richard Friedman's "Who Wrote The
Bible?", Genesis 6:19 is part of the "P" (Priestly) source document while
Genesis 7:2-3 is part of "J", the "Jahvist" (Jehovah) source document. In
J it was necessary to have seven pairs of the clean animals so that some
could be sacrificed without extinguishing a species, while in P, written
by priests of Aaron, there were no sacrifices until Aaron appeared on the
scene; sacrifices could only be performed by priests.

Isn't Gerald Ford Episcopalian? I seem to remember a story where he

was scheduled to preach. Maybe she was still a deacon. But when it
was noted that the president was in the congregation, she was replaced
by one of the male priests. The president made a point of coming back
on another Sunday when she was scheduled again and insisted that she
    not be replaced again.

How old was Ismael when Isaac was born?
1087.41POWDML::FLANAGANlet your light shineMon Oct 09 1995 12:3315
    Meg,

There are two versions of the story in Genesis. One coming from I
believe the "E" and the other coming from the "P" source.

According to the "P" source Ismael was born when Abraham was 86 and
Issac was born when Abraham was 100. Making Ismael 14 when Isaac was
    born.

According to the "E" source, Hagar and the infant child Ismael were
expelled from Abraham's and Sarah's household, after Isaac was born.
This would make Ismael an infant when Isaac was born.

The "E" source is the older source, so the answer was he was an infant
    according to the older tradition.

THEOLOGY 911 * FINAL EXAM

1. Summarize Thomas Aquinas' _Summa Theologiae_ in three succinct
sentences. You may use your bible.

2. St. Martin of Tours and Pope Clement VII were not contemporaries.
Had they known each other, how would the history of the Reformation turned
out differently?

3. Define a moral system that satisfies Liberals, Conservatives,
Moderates, and the entire population of Ancient Rome, ca. 3 BCE.

4. Memorize the Bible. Recite it in tongues.

5. Imagine you have the stigmata. Would it affect your productivity at
work? Would you still be admitted into fine restaurants? Would it be
covered by your medical insurance, or should it constitute a pre-existent
condition?

6. What does it mean to be eternal, co-eternal, and non-existent all at
once?

7. St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine of Hippo decide to rob a bank.
The note to the teller is 1,200 pages long, not counting footnotes,
complete with a promise of damnation if the teller does not accept
immediate Baptism. In the middle of the heist, they engage in an
extended debate as to whether or not the money really exists.
Are they committing a mortal or a venial sin?

8. Speculate on what the current status of salvation history might have
been if Abraham had just stayed in Ur.

According to the Bible, who provided the instructions for the
construction of the vessel known as Noah's Ark?

re .110

	Richard,

According to Genesis 6:13-16 & 22 it was Jehovah God, though
these verses don't go into full detail we are able to see
the size that the Ark was to be when completed.

Genesis 6:13-16 NWT 'After that God said to Noah: "The end of
all flesh has come before me, because the earth is full of
violence as a result of them; and here I am bringing them to
ruin together with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark out
of wood of a resinous tree. You will make compartments in the ark,
and you must cover it inside and outside with tar. 15 And this is
how you will make it: three hundred cubits the length of the ark,
fifty cubits its width, and thirty cubits its height. 16 You will
make a tso'har [roof; or, window] for the ark, and you will complete
it to the extent of a cubit upward, and the entrance of the ark you
will put in its side; you will make it with a lower [story], a second
[story] and a third [story].' and verse 22 'And Noah proceeded to do
according to all that God had commanded him. He did just so.'

If I remember rightly a cubit is close to 1.5 feet (17.5 inches) in
length, so that Ark was likely to be chestlike retangular shape with
	dimensions of 437 ft 6 inches X 72 ft 11in X 43 ft 9 inches . It
would have been quite a sight once built.

	Phil.

    Not a trick question.

The answer I was looking for to 1087.110 is "God."

I read a thesis on this subject by my Pastor.

Apparently the word for the pitch used to seal the ark is from the same
root word for atonement. The covering and all.....

That's correct, Jack. "Kaphar" is used in the OT 71 times and is
translated as "atonement" in 70 of them. Genesis 6:14 is the lone
exception, but it is still a typological picture of atonement (i.e.,
    salvation).
