943.0. "Other sacred texts" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Heat-seeking pacifist) Thu Jun 30 1994 22:13

Are there other sacred texts in addition to the Bible that Christians
might hold in reverence?

Could your life be considered a sacred text? Is there any Scriptural basis
for such a concept?

Shalom,
Richard

        Sure.

I believe that *all* sacred writings are inspired by God's
spirit and "profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
        correction, for instruction in righteousness."

(Of course, you might then ask "What are the sacred
        writings"?)

I think, at least in a poetic sense, our lives can be a sacred text.

Someone once said, "Your life may be the only Bible that some people
    will ever read."

God grant that we may live up to this challenge.

      Hi Richard,

Paul said that we are 'living epistles' read by men.

In its ultimate sense, the 'Word' is revelation. As that
revelation is received by faith, we begin to emit that same
word. If faith is perfected and rests on a certain fulness
of a revelation of who God is, we are proportionately a like
        revelation of who God is.

May the day come when it can be said, "when one sees that
person, one sees the Father." That's the essence of Christianity
        - to save us from our sins.

        Bob:

How true. After all, Satanists consider the Book of Shadows or
Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible to be sacred. That's why we must be on
the watch for forgeries, counterfeits, and doctrines that will
	steer one away from truth.

Ohh.., you concur that the essence of Christianity is that we have to
    be saved from our sin?

Please don't let's turn this note into another probing of each other's
    faith and beliefs.

    It's a nice note, OK? :-)

The essense of Christianity for me is to live in Christ. To live in
Christ means that we have what is required written on our hearts. We
are naturally turned away from sin. We are saved from sin. Sin is
    separation from God.

I have no problem with that statement.

    Julie,

    thanks for your reminder.

943.10Salvation Is FROM and Not IN SinSTRATA::BARBIERIFri Jul 01 1994 22:0658

    Matthew 1:21
"And she shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name
Jesus, for He will save His people FROM their sins."

Yes, it is the essence of Christianity. To be saved from sin
is to be wholly restored to oneness in Him.

     Acts 3:25
"You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with
our fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your seed all the families
of the earth shall be blessed.'

     Galatians 3:8
And the scripture foreseeing that God would justify the nations by
faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you
all the nations shall be blessed."

     Let's see now. Acts mentions

     The covenant
     The blessing

Galatians is linked to Acts in that it speaks of the blessing. It
     also links with this...

     Justification by faith
     The Preaching of the Gospel

Well, let's see what the Bible says all this is for...

Acts 3:26 (keep in mind right after Acts 3:25)
"To you first, God, having raised up His servant Jesus, sent Him to
     bless you...

     [ahhh, here is the blessing...]

...in turning away every one of you from your iniquities."

This is the purpose of the gospel. This is justification by faith.
This is the blessing. This is the covenant.

To denounce this is blasphemy. This, in a nutshell, is the biggest
problem with Christianity today. It is the blasphemous dogma that
we are saved IN and not FROM our sins. This may be popular
sentiment, but it is directly in contradiction to the plainest
statements of the word of God.

Please excuse my flaming, but this strikes deep. We cannot excuse
our sin. It is sin which is our condemnation. Yes, we are accounted
rightouess when we first come to God by faith and begin to allow heart
cleansing, but the ridding of our heart from sin IS salvation.

Salvation from sin is what the Bible says.

I'm on vacation all next week, so please understand any silence.

                                                        Tony

I'm sorry about that...we live in a world of mixed messages and it
    can be confusing at times.
