765.0. "Thanksgiving Day Sin" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Pacifist Hellcat) Sun Nov 21 1993 20:22

A traditional Thanksgiving Day observance in modern American households often
looks like this:

Typically, a woman rises early to begin preparations of the Thanksgiving
meal, which usually includes a turkey stuffed with dressing often made from
scratch, cranberry sauce, potatoes or yams, creamed onions, ripe olives,
fruit salad, biscuits, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. The meal itself
is an unintentional exercise in gluttony.

Sinfully full, consumptively sated beyond capacity, the men groan their way
to the couch set squarely in front of the TV and settle in to burn the rest
of the day watching football games. Usually the women have to the aftermeal
clean up.

Anybody's tradition differ much from this?

Richard

Cooking generally starts the day before. :-) All hands help both with
cooking and clean up. In my uncle/aunt's family all the baking, of
which there is a lot, is done by the men. In my house it's split with
my son helping quite a bit.

Thanksgiving cooking serves a dual purpose in our house. We cook much
more than we need for one meal. Typically we freeze enough for 2-4
extra meals. This is for use as a time saver. It allows us to have
good meals in spite of a very busy work schedule complicated by the
holiday season with its special events.

Football is most of what's on TV so the TV typically doesn't get
turned on. We'll all help put the food up for freezing, wash what
dishes/pots that don't fit in the dish washer and then take it easy.
Probably we'll play a little basketball. Especially if we have company.

When we used to get together as an extended family, before I got
married and moved too far away, it was something like .0. But more
religious of course. We never failed to attend church and give thanks.
Cooking was always a joint male/female affair. Especially at my fathers
house where he was the only adult. :-) On a couple of occasions we
had Chinese take out for Thanksgiving. Very little cooking to do and
clean up was easy. My cousins loved it but some of the more traditional
adults didn't like to admit that they did. :-)

Seldom was there football on TV. Tag football outside perhaps.
Basketball was almost a given. The adults talked a lot though sometimes
    they played as well.

Errr...if it's not prying, what was/is your typical Thanksgiving like??

    Well, lets see.

To start with, my family doesn't watch football or "sport" games on
TV. I think that they are a total waste of time. My son does play
in the High School band during a school football game, though.

The idea of the wife cooking the meal is different at my house too.
My wife and I work on the meal together....as a matter of fact, I
    always clean up after meals.

The meal does consist of turkey ( last years DEC turkey) , and we do
have a large meal..but we don't try to eat as much as we can.
Rather, people eat a full, complete meal.

For my family, its a time to have a nice family day/meal.

I don't think that the description is .0 is common for many folks
    nowadays.

The description in .0 sure sounds like all the family T-givings I've
    ever been to.

I can't stomach another one like it. This year I'm avoiding anything
that even *looks* like a "traditional" Thanxgiving.

    .5 Thanks, Marc.

We're not into spectator sports at my house, either. I'm now beginning
    to wonder if anybody is watching all those games on TV!?  8-}

We're planning to go to church Thanksgiving morning.

Last year, we went to a nearby cafeteria-style resturant (Hometown
Buffet) and somebody else did the dishes and the cleaning up. For
that we, too, were thankful. :-)

    Shalom,
    Richard

Gee Richard, sorry to see your Thanksgiving sux ! Mine is quite
different except that I do watch the football games. I
do ALL the cooking which I luv to do and I do a major portion of
the cleanup. We eat hearty, but its the only meal of the day except
for the light breakfast we have.

Most of all, we give thanks to God, for all that he has blessed us with.

I don't see any sin in the way my family celebrates Thanksgiving.

.8 Good to see you again, Jim!

Don't be misled. I didn't say that .0 typified my own Thanksgiving.

It's not all that unusual for the ones who are sinning to fail to
recognize their sin, as you probably well know.

My purpose is not to induce guilt. I would like for folks to examine
their habit(s) and make certain it is in keeping with the meaning of
    the observance.

I suspect we won't hear very much from those who do not take exception
to the scenario outlined in .0. Who would want to admit it if it was
    a perfect match, and wanted to keep it that way??  8-}

    Peace,
    Richard

It's a perfect description of the way Thanksgiving used to be in our
family. Unfortunately my brothers and sisters don't go home for
Thanksgiving anymore, and my parents are on a strict diet.

Oh for the good old days...

I'm not very fond of turkey. We usually have Cornish game hen and wild
rice, sweet potatoes, ripe olives and pie. Sometimes a little wine.
We usually have guests for Thanksgiving dinner. We didn't last year though.
We won't this year. Admittedly, my wife does most of the cooking and
clean up. Invariably, she insists that we starting eating while our
meal is hot. Invariably, we wait for her to sit down so that we can
share a time of prayer together.

We don't watch sports on TV. Give me a sentimental old movie, instead.

Peace,
Richard
