749.0. "Thou shalt not muzzle the ox" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Pacifist Hellcat) Sun Oct 24 1993 01:32

Deuteronomy 25:4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out [the
corn].

This commandment is found amid a series of non-agricultural commandments.
It seems to incongruously pop out of nowhere.

Even more interesting is how this commandment is applied elsewhere:

I Timothy 5:18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox
that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer [is] worthy of
his reward.

I Corintians 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not
muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God
take care for oxen?

Shalom,
Richard

It is indeed in the middle of non-agricultural commandments.
The meaning is probably more than simply the literal meaning
of muzzling oxen. Paul indicates this when quoting this as
you noted.
