728.0. "request for music for ordination" by DLO15::FRANCEY () Mon Sep 27 1993 17:45

    Any suggestions for the music for an ordination? I'm looking for
    prelude,postlude, special music (maybe with a soloist or duet and also
    perhaps with guitar), processional hymn, hymn of preparation, and
    recessional hymn.

    We favor the songs from the singing Monks of the Weston Priory but all
    suggestions are welcomed.

    We would like to have the music selected by the end of this week or by
    early next week at the latest.

    	Shalom!

    	Ron

    Two songs come immediately to mind, Ron:

    	"Seek Ye First [the Kingdom of God]"

    	"Here I Am, Lord"

    Do you know these?

728.2words for first?DLO15::FRANCEYMon Sep 27 1993 19:1213
    Richard,

    How does the first song go (first few sentences)? Is this a
    well-knbown hymn? If so, I may have it in the churches' hymnals.

    Isn't the second song: "Here am I, Lord; Here am I; send me ..."?

    What aboout some classical, ie. Mozart?

    	Shalom,

    	Ron

728.3Veni, Creator SpiritusCOVERT::COVERTJohn R. CovertMon Sep 27 1993 19:2827
	Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
	And lighten with celestial fire.
	Thou the anointing Spirit art,
	Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

	Thy blessed unction from above,
	Is comfort, life, and fire of love.
	Enable with perpetual light
	The dulness of our blinded sight.

	Anoint and cheer our soiled face
	With the abundance of thy grace.
	Keep far our foes, give peace at home;
	Where thou art guide, no ill can come.

	Teach us to know the Father, Son,
	And thee, of both, to be but One;
	That through the ages all along,
	This may be our endless song:
	  Praise to thy eternal merit,
	  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You would probably prefer the traditional plainsong setting; the first movement
of Mahler's 8th Symphony might be a bit much (and I doubt you want to hire the
musicians and double chorus required to perform it).

728.4any ptr to inclusive lang variant?DLO15::FRANCEYMon Sep 27 1993 20:3019
    John,

    Is there an inclusive language variant or a ptr to one that you may
    have?

    I like Mahler's Eighth very much - and I have a daughter who works for
    the BSO. Hmmm, I wonder ...

    I also have a friend who is a high school band/orchestra teacher (who
    used to have a crush on the daughter above). He and I stayed good
    friends, my daughter has other ideas (and another friend). Maybe we
    could have a high school event or an orchestral group from the school.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    	Shalom,

    	Ron

I don't see any non-inclusive language in the text I posted.

I will not be a party to any denial of "The Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit" as being the revealed way to refer to God in Unity and Trinity.

    John,

    I'm not looking for you to be part of "denying". I see Creator, Christ
    and Holy Spirit very much including Father, Son & Holy Ghost. I'm also
    looking for more modern language rather than thee/thou/thy stuff to
    something that we use in todays speech.

    Thanks for your comments!

Chorus (from memory)

	Here I am, Lord.
	I have heard you calling in the night.
	I will follow, if you lead me
	da-da-da, I can't remember the words....

   Re .2

   Seek ye first the kingdom of God
   and His righteousness
   and all these things will be added unto you
   allelelujah.
728.9COVERT::COVERTJohn R. CovertMon Sep 27 1993 22:017
The problem with saying "Creator" rather than "Father" is that it

     	1. depersonalizes God
	2. denies the role of the Word and Spirit in Creation
	3. rejects Christ's specific direction to pray to the Father.

    Alas.  Another derailment.

    The operative word in first phrase of the Lord's prayer is "Our". How
    terribly inclusive that word is. How terribly PC of Jesus to have
    suggested so freely using it.

 Unfortunately I don't remember the words, but the chorus is:

 Bring them in
 bring them in
 bring them in from the fields of sin
 bring them in
 bring them in
 bring the wandering ones to Jesus..

728.17how about a litle more celebrativeDLO15::FRANCEYTue Sep 28 1993 13:5213
    "bring them in from the fields of sin"???

    Jim,

    Shucks but I just cannot emphasize "sin" during an ordination. How
    about a more celebrative song or joyous song of being together, of
    living together, of meting the challenge to make a difference in the
    world?

    	Shalom,

    	Ron

 I was thinking more of the "bring them in", as fulfilling the Great
Commission, which I kinda thought might be one of the focuses of pastoring.

    The Lord is my Light,
    My light and my salvation.
    Whom then shall I fear.
    The Lord is the strength of my life.
    Of whom then shall I be afraid.

    Though an host of men were laid against me,
    yet shall not my heart be afraid.

    etc. (I'm brain dead at the moment and am not remembering the rest.)

728.20"Happiness" - song from the Weston PrioryDLO15::FRANCEYFri Oct 01 1993 17:3925
    From the Monks of the Weston (VT) Priory:

    "Happiness"

    Happiness is where you are and what you want to be. If you look you're
    sure to find the rainbow of your dreams. Tomorrow's fuller than a
    thousand yesterdays with the vision of a new day in your heart.

    If the clouds should darken you may turn your hopes on high. Sorrow
    isn't meant to shake you from your way of life. Just keep on lookin'
    for the answer to it all with the vision of a new day in your heart.

    Bitter sands may cross the desert of your ev'ry day. Your mind can
    blow away the fears that always will be there. If you can look beyond
    the neon and the glass you will find a new day in your heart.

    Happy those who know the word and make it their own. Truth and
    sincerity will be their only home. Look to the star and find a reason
    to believe with the vision of a new day in your heart.

    Happiness is where you are and what you want to be. If you look you're
    sure to find the rainbow of your dreams. Tomorrow's fuller than a
    thousand yesterdays with the vision of a new day in your heart, with a
    vision of a new day in your heart.

728.21Yahweh - song from Monks of Weston PrioryDLO15::FRANCEYFri Oct 01 1993 17:4836
    From the songsof the Monks of the Weston (VT) Priory:

    "Yahweh"

    refrain:

    Yahweh is the God of my salvation: I trust in him and have no fear. I
    sing of the joy which his love gives to me, and I draw deeply from the
    springs of his great kindness.

    Verses:

    Open our eyes to the wonder of this moment the beginning of another
    day.

    [then refrain again]

    Be with us, Lord, as we break through with each other to find the truth
    and beauty of each friend.

    [then refrain]

    When ev'ning comes and our day of toil is over give us rest, O Lord, in
    the joy of many friends.

    [then refrain]

    Take us beyond the vision of this day to the deep and wide ways of your
    infinite love and life.

    [final refrain ending as below]

    Yahweh is the God of my salvation: I trust in him and have no fear. I
    sing of the joy which his loves gives to me, and I draw deeply from the
    springs of his great kindness.
