713.0. "Gideons?" by JUPITR::HILDEBRANT (I'm the NRA) Fri Jul 02 1993 18:34

We had a presentation, last sunday at church, from a member of
    the Gideons....you know...the Bible people.

Does anyone know about this group? What type of Bible they use?

I think it varies. King James and/or Revised Standard I think. Perhaps
someone who visits a hotel can check. :-) They give out Bibles in the
county jail as well but I'm not scheduled to visit for a while. They
also distribute Spanish Bibles in the jail. The guards tell me those
go fast. I imagine that what ever is the most common Spanish
    translation is what they use.

Don't know much about the Gideon Society, either. I've seen their
Bibles in the nightstands of hotel rooms and hospital rooms.

I've attended a couple churches where the Gideons have financed
the building, one church in particular in which their appearance
at the pastor's office unannounced was a direct answer to prayer.

As far as I know, the KJV is the only English language Bible the Gideons put
in hotel rooms.

No copyright issue (as with the RSV), so it's much cheaper for wide
distribution.

But I find the King James SO hard to read; whenever I pick
up a Gideon Bible in a hotel room I always put it down before
        I've read half a page.

Marc .0,

Why don't you share a little about what the speaker at your church
had to say about the Gideons?

Richard

 I once said I'd never read/own a King James version..but I've found I love it.
I have a little trouble with some of the words, but the Life Application Bible
in King James has a nice little dictionary to help with some of the words..

John 11:39 in King James reads "...by this time he stinketh" refering to
 Lazarus :-)

    RE: .6

    O.K. Richard.

The Gideon speaker only talked for about 15 min. During the talk, he
would produce different books of scripture as examples of the books
they distributed. He would pull out a small green book from a suit
pocket....new testament readings....a red book, a white book,
Bibles..etc. The man was a walking library!
Pulling out the different publications from his pockets was a clever
was to keep the attention of the people.

It seems that the different books are for different places.....i.e.
the green books are given out to college students. The red books are
given out to public school children( he talked about the hassel
given to him at times to give out scripture at schools).

The man also said that the biggest place that Bibles are going to
today, is to Russia.....thousands a day.

The society itself seems unique. Each member pays there own expenses
to meetings, travel, etc. In that way, the money given to the
Gideons goes mainly for Bibles/New Testaments. It seems to be an
    all volunter setup.

The Gideons passed out some handouts on how to donate money to them
. The basic price is a little less than $5.00 per Bible (they have
there own printing house). You can have Bibles donated in memory
    of family members.....

They seem to be convinced that by placing the Word of God in everywhere
they can find...that people will be converted to a Christian life
by the power of the words in the Bible. That is there main driving
force in their society. I.E., the traveler in the motel who just
happens to read the Bible...and then changes his/her life.

    I'll send them a donation.

I know there was a time early in my Christian life where I was quite
thankful there was a Bible placed by the Gideon's in my hotel room. I
used to spend a lot of time on the road, and while I took my own Bible
with me, I found some helps in the Gideon Bible that were a tremendous
 blessing.

    	Just guessing but..

Gideon, with 300 men, defeated an army of 32000 Midionites by
using a trick. He divided the 300 men into smaller parties and
posted each one strategically around the enemy. They, thinking
    	they were surrounded (=outnumbered), fled.

By positioning bibles strategically amongst the "enemy" the
Gideons are, effectively waging "war" on vastly superior
numbers and, they are apparently assured of their ultimate
    	victory.

Even if the guess is wrong, I see close parallels.

    	Greetings, Derek.
