709.0. "parting words: final sermon" by MR4DEC::RFRANCEY (dtn 297-5264 mro4-3/g15) Sun Jun 20 1993 18:46

Any advice for Dot's last sermon for next Sunday??? Scripture???
Lessons, messages, stories, relevant jokes - all for a parting Interim
to give to a church which is awaiting the arrival of the new permanent
    pastor on August 1st.

Two weeks to travel to Texas!

    	Shalom,

I had a UM pastor in Phoenix who was artful in his understanding and use
of ceremony. He understood how ceremony seems to make things official.
So it is with weddings, funerals, and numerous other rites of passage.

He always made sure that there was some sort of ceremony to bring closure
whenever a church leader was about to depart or change roles.

I thought this very wise of him.

I think I'd give a sermon based on the idea that the Goodbye is a
contraction for "God be with you," that in Spanish, Adios is a
contraction for Vaya con Dios, which means, "Go with God."

I think it's important to recall aloud Dot's most pleasant memories
as interim pastor; funny moments, unforgettable moments, that sort of thing.
Thank yous are appropriate. What she has learned and how she has been
strengthened by the experience would be good.

I would avoid like the plague cliche farewells, like "for every
goodbye, there's a hello." At the same time, I would make it very clear
that Dot is ending this phase of her ministry and looking ahead with hope
and faith to continue in Christ's service. Ask to remain in their personal
prayers. She will whether she asks or not, I'm sure.

Peace,
Richard

Well, Dot's sermon is pretty much done and we give you thanks for your
comments. Her sermon title is: "The Experience of Grace"
She delivered it to me last night as we were on our way to have our
final meal at my daughter and son-in-law's home.

I've always known Dot to be an introvert - yet, her sermon was just a
little more than 27 minutes ... strange, this touch of the Grace of
    God.
