685.1The Church of the Advent, BostonCOVERT::COVERTJohn R. CovertMon May 24 1993 16:1877
The Episcopal Parish of the Advent has three priests committed to preaching
the Gospel and proclaiming the Catholic Faith in Apostolic tradition. It has
a diverse congregation, rich, highly liturgical worship and a very serious
commitment to music.

It uses Rite I (traditional idiom) at all Solemn Masses, 11:00 am Sundays
& 6:30 pm on Principal Feasts.

It uses Rite II (modern idiom) at Sunday 9:00 am Sung "Family" Mass.

It uses the 1928 Prayer Book at Sunday 8:00 am Mass.

Directions:

The Church of the Advent is located at the corner of Mount Vernon and
Brimmer Streets at the foot of Beacon Hill. It is located between
Charles Street and the River, between the Public Garden and Charles
Circle.

Mount Vernon Street runs from the side of (or underneath) the State
House to the river, crossing Charles St about halfway between Charles
Circle and the Public Garden or Boston Common. Brimmer Street runs
one-way from Pinckney Street (the next street crossing Charles Street
closer to Charles Circle than Mount Vernon Street) to Beacon Street,
entering Beacon Street next to the Hampshire House or Bull and Finch
(Cheers) Pub opposite the Public Garden.

The closest public transportation stop is the Red Line Charles/MGH
stop above Charles Circle. If you are on the platform at Alewife
station (Route 2, Arlington/Cambridge) 45 minutes before a service
begins at The Church of the Advent, you will have enough time. The
closest Green Line stop is Arlington, near the Public Garden.

Approaching by car: (1) from the West, take Storrow Drive to the
Government Center exit, and hard right to turn onto Charles Street,
which is one-way from Charles Circle to Beacon Street. It's also
possible to turn just before the exit onto Revere Street, saving
some lights, but missing some potential parking places. (2) from
the North or South, take I-93 to Storrow Drive to the Government
Center exit, going straight across onto Charles Street. (3) from
Cambridge, go through Kendall Square or along Memorial Drive to the
Longfellow Bridge; once across it turn right onto Charles Street.

Parking is difficult; much of the parking in the area is resident
only. The situation has been much worse since 1 November 92, when
the Boston Common Garage closed for a lengthy repair. On-street
parking might be found on Charles Street, on Beacon Street, on
Arlington Street, Boylston Street, or Charles Street (circling the
Public Garden), or on Cambridge Street, Stanford Street, or New
Chardon Street near Government Center.

Once parked, walk along Charles Street to either Mt Vernon or to
Pinckney Street. Walk towards the river (away from the hill) to
Brimmer Street, and turn on Brimmer Street towards the Church.
