652.0. "CP and allegory." by VNABRW::BUTTON (Do not reset mind, reality is fuzzy !) Fri Apr 23 1993 10:25

	In reviewing a few topics the other day, I got an odd feeling
	that I was reading a sort of allegory of the Biblical Jesus. I
	felt that, sometime, the way this conference develops, is a mirror
	of Jesus as presented in the Gospels. I'll try to illustrate:

	Virgin birth.
	  - Someone comes up with a *new* idea and opens a topic.
	    (The fact that the ideas, even if new to CP, may not really
	    be original, reflects the discussion on the reality of Mary's
	    virginity).

	Descent from David.
	  - The use of quotes from this or that prominent scholar to
	    justify a claim.
	  - Disagreement on which scholarship is more relevant under-
	    scores the discussion of the two lineages (Mary,Joseph).

	Circumcision.
	  - Some topics come under the knife pretty soon after birth.

	Baptism.
	  - Well, I underwent both baptism by water (after my intro note)
	    and by fire (637). Hi, Patrick! :-)

	Overturned tables.
	  - Plenty of letting of steam in CP.
	  - Strong signs of polarisation (Gays and Christians)

	Parables.
	  - Pharisee and Tax-collector. I seem to see both attitudes
	    in CP.
	  - Good Samaritan. There are several noters who want to patch
	    the wounds of the others.

	Miracles.
	  - Fishes and loaves: There are numerous examples in CP of
	    mountains being made out of molehills;
	  - Water into wine: Inerrancy (a personal view, admittedly);
	    or turning sects into cults (this would be more accurately
	    water into wine);
	  - Healing the sick: See Good Samaritan.
	  - Raising from dead: "Dont forget what you said in <insert
	    your favourite note_id, dated 1991>."
	  - Pacifying the waters: frequent interventions by fellow-
	    noters to clear up misunderstandings.
	  - Walking on water: This note is probably a good example.

	Crucifixion.
	  - (Maybe this is stronger in *the other conference*) The
	    evolutionists want to nail the creationists to the cross
	    and vice versa.

	Resurrection.
	  - Themes which seem to reappear when thought dead (God-
	    breathed, for example).

	Maybe I'm seeing unholy ghosts. Anyone like to add to the list?
	Or comment?

	Greetings, Derek.

    	That man Derek sure has a good head on his shoulders
    	and he knows how to use his brain. I like it.

Sometimes I think it's more like "CP and allergy" (as in: some of us are
allergic to each other!)

    Well, some of us may disagree immensely but I still think it's a great
    forum to express different viewpoints in an uninhibited way. It
    certainly has its drawbacks but sometimes things make one think a
    little deeper!!!
