638.0. "In God We Trust" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Rise Again!) Thu Apr 08 1993 20:33

'The lead editorial in the Feb. 20 edition of "World" magazine,
published by God's World Publications, expresses concern about the phrase
"In God We Trust," which has appeared since 1954 on U.S. money. It was
asserted that the phrase was "far too ambiguous to give spiritual
substance to anyone." Moreover, it doesn't identify which God it is
in which we should trust -- Jehovah? Allah? Jesus?

Says "World," America would be better off if all currency were changed
to carry the slogan: WE TRUST THE GOD OF THE BIBLE.'

I don't see that that narrows it down that much. :-)

Don't I recall some biblical episode about Jesus looking at a coin and
saying "render until Caesar that which is Caesar's" Does that not
imply that In God we trust should not be on a coin.

    .2 Patricia,

It also raises the question of exactly what *is* Caesar's?
And also, in a government of, by, and for the people, exactly
    *who* is Caesar?

In Jesus' time, Caesar represented an occupational government
which was particularly unwelcome to the people of Israel.

We should eliminate the phrase from all currency and other government issues, if
any. The phrase was added in the 1950's as part of the fight against atheistic
communism, and was no more true then as now, or ever. We certainly got along
fine before it came along, dontcha' think?

I expect we should also rewrite the Declaration of Independence
since we as a country no longer believe in some of its basic
precepts (or at least we only give it lip service while denying
the foundational truth...)

Re -.1

Collis, the Declaration is not an official government document. We don't need
expressions of faith in our official issue - that smacks of violation of the
First Amendment.
