587.0. "Why study the Bible?" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Peace Warrior) Fri Jan 15 1993 15:14

I think the question of 'why study the Bible?' is a legitimate one, and one
deserving of its own topic.

Peace,
Richard

Dave I couldn't agree more about reading verses "in context." That's
what I like so much about this Inductive Study Bible. It was the goal
of the people who put it together that anyone could use the techniques
that they've given to understand a verse in the context of not only the
surrounding passage, but in relation to history, also the intent of
the author in writing the book, and also in context to entire message
    of the Bible.

I also agree that Scripture can show you new things with each reading.
It's an amazing book...definitely not just the work of men. I've been
in church all my life and I'm still learning, still getting closer to
God. What an Awesome God we have!

Why study the Bible?

Well, first of all, let me explain what I mean by study. I simply mean
"reading for understanding." I don't (necessarily) mean study in the
scholarly sense.

The Bible contains a rich treasure of spiritual insight, history and
tradition. The Bible contains translations of writings long considered
sacred. The New Testament contains the oldest known chronicles of the
words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ.

The Bible is like a roadmap. It is filled with the landmark entries of
sojourners of the past.

The Bible is used by Christians world-wide. It is, therefore, something
Christians everywhere share in common.

Peace,
Richard

It's good to study the Bible, but it's better to eat the Bible.

"Thy words were found and I did eat them"
"MAn shall not live on bread alone but by every word which proceeds out
through the mouth of God" (Mark?)

Your Bible laced with some funny stuff there, ace?

PS I do know what you're talking about. I think it was Jeremiah
    who ate some scrolls, too.

yes Richard, but if memory serves me correctly, they became bitter in his
stomach. Should have used a better quality of rice paper. 8*) 8*)

Really though, God's Word is for nourishment not for mental gymnastics.

I've done the deep scholarly study, the answers didn't surprise me.
It was nice to know things fit. Now I'm more inclined to pick up the
beautiful KJV Bible and read a chapter at random and reflect
on how it may tie up with today, this moment. Other times it's a
place both in time and space I can go to for a different view. It
is a rich source of ideas to apply against daily problems when I
   draw a blank.

No matter if you believe it is God breathed or man written it's
stories are no less remarkable. I also could never remember a
time when some version wasn't immeadiately available.

    Hey Bubba,

You brought this question "Why study the Bible?" up again the other
day when we talked. I think I got a partial answer for you?

            Why does a marine train?

So when it all comes down, they know what's expected
of them and they know what to do. I think it's the
same for a Christian whether it's defending your faith
or knowing what's going to happen in the end times.
A Christian, like a marine, needs to be equipped for
    	    service.

I know what you mean. There were times (during my USMC tour) when I went
to Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish services .. just to cover all the bases.
Quite frankly, had there been a Navajo medicine man around .. I would have
taken council of his faith.
