569.0. "A Child's Bedtime Prayer" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Strength through peace) Wed Dec 16 1992 21:36

Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.

How many of us had this as our bedtime prayer as children? How many
said it by rote without thinking too much about it? And in how many did it
arouse a fear of dying in one's sleep?

Actually, it always made me hope I would die while I was asleep, rather than
some painful, sudden death while awake.

I said it as a child. Like John it often made me hope I'd die in my
sleep. Seemed a much better way to go. Later of course I did fear
death somewhat. I was exposed to it young and while most children think
they well never die, I believed that if my mother could die so could I.
And while I knew she was in heaven I thought you had to be "good enough"
to get into heaven. Being that good didn't seem possible. And the fear
did keep me awake more then a few nights. Fortuanatly I found a personal
relationship with Jesus and the peace that comes with it. Death hasn't
held any special fear for me since.

Well, I used to say the prayer in .0 every night without thinking too much
about it. It was a part of my childhood bedtime ritual. Somewhere along the
line, the gravity of what I was praying for came crashing through to my
young consciousness:

If I should die before I wake?? Dying in my sleep had never occurred
   to me!

Hey, maybe if I don't go to sleep, I won't die! Yeah, that must be it!

Well, you guessed it. Resist as I might, sleep inevitably overcame me. My
yielding to it was always just a matter of time.

Peace,
Richard

I don't remember ever worrying about dying in my sleep. But I didn't
want to risk that fear in my kids so I used, and still use, this
    version:

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Please Jesus watch me through the night
And wake me with the morning light
    				Amen

We use (with our two year old)

Dear Lord, bless mommy, daddy, Gregory, Andrew, Audrey, Auntie Barbwa,
Noni (Grandmother), Grandma, Grandpa, help me to be a good girl....
In Jesus Name...AMEN (clap clap clap clap....)

It's really cute because she lies is crib and folds hands, and when I
get to that last part, she says it with us than says Hoorrayyyyy.....
It's very funny because she usually has a pacifier in her mouth! :-)

This one from my mother. Her Christian Science Practitioner Grand
    mother taught it to her.

    Father, Mother God
    come to me
    Guard me while I sleep
    guide my little feet
    Unto thee

    amen.

Almost even works for this pagan.
