551.0. "Marcion" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Strength through peace) Thu Nov 12 1992 17:36

Marcion - a man not even mentioned in the Bible - yet the catalyst probably
most responsible for the formalization of the canon we know today as the
New Testament.

Marcion, as I recall, campaigned for the New Testament to consist solely of
the Gospel of Luke and some of Paul's letters.

Peace,
Richard

    Marcion also believed, as I recall, that the Yahweh of the Old
    Testament was different, and inferior, to the loving Father of the New
    Testament. I remember discussing Marcion very briefly with a Unitarian
    minister, who argued that the Old Testament God displayed attributes of
    love, and the New Testament God displayed attributes sometimes
    exclusively assigned to the Old Testament God, and that therefore
    Marcion's view was simplistic. I am inclined to agree, and feel that
    criticizing the God of the Hebrew scriptures too much in that way can
    lead to an intolerance towards the Jewish faith.
