489.0. "Self-preservation vs Mission" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Peace) Fri Jul 10 1992 20:01

One of the problems with any entity is that once the entity
is set in motion, almost invariably, its prime directive becomes one
of self-preservation and self-perpetuation.

I believe that this instinct of self-preservation and self-
perpetuation sometimes gains greater impetus than the original mission
of the entity.

I suspect this happens even to our churches. When this happens,
to what degree do you see it as a hindrance to the mission of the church?
What can be done about it? Should anything be done about it?

Peace,
Richard

I believe a distinction needs to be made between organizations that
have a fixed goal and when the goal is achieved, the reason for their
    existence is moot.

For example, the Nestle Infant Formula boycott is over, Nestle agreed
to all the terms of the boycott organizers. I got a thank you letter
from them. I had first-hand experience in Africa with the problems of
the parasite-infested water that was being used for the preparation of
    the formula in the 1970's.

The day may come when whales may become an environmental pest as
certain species of deer have. Certainly all the organizations in
opposition to Soviet forms of Communism have no reason any longer to
    exist in their pre-1991 form.

But other organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will
continue to exist as long as there are girls and boys. You can
probably think of other organizations that will always be needed.

Certain churches or congregations can't financially support themselves.
Certain television ministries can't financially support themselves.
That's only the material existence however. There's a church wherever
two or more are gathered in His name.

Each Christian church has a reason to exist until the return of Jesus
Christ in glory. There are reasons for Christian churches to separate
and to be united, but none to cease to exist. The Church's mission
remains unfulfilled until the end of time itself.

Another organization that declared victory and disbanded was the Action
for Children's Television (ACT). The passage of the 1990 Children's
Television Act placed limits on advertising, and requires the
television licenesees prove they served the educational and
    information needs of children.
