443.0. "Script or Co-incidence?" by USCTR1::RTRUEBLOOD (Rollyn Trueblood DTN 297-6553) Thu Apr 23 1992 22:08

Recently a friend observed to me several of Christ's statements appear to
be direct quotes taken from Jewish ceremonies, most notably those
of sacrifice. Is this co-incidence, biblical embellishment, or use
of `magic words' to gain followers?

Best wishes,
Rollyn

The one that comes to mind first, because I have not read Judaic
cerimonial rites in depth, is the dying words of Christ - `it is
finished' - is a direct quote of the last cerimonial words of the
high priest at a (lamb?) sacrifice.

If there is a Messianic Christian within reach, perhaps other
observations & co-incedences could be shared.

Best wishes,
Rollyn

    Jesus may also have quoted so much from Judaic sources and the Old
    Testament because he is truely the Son of God, the Messiah.

    As St. Paul teaches, Jesus brings to total fulfillment and completeness
    the Jewish law and covenant. He IS the actual sacrificial lamb that
    the Jewish faith only approximated by the "stand-in" sacrificial lamb.

    Jesus was not "appropriating" the position with his words, but rather,
    he was showing the Jewish people that he was now the fulfilment of all
    their scriptures and observances. The Jewish people were (and are)
    so fixed on their observances that they failed to recognize that he
    was among them.

    The Gospel of Matthew was written for the Jewish people with many
    references as to how Jesus fulfilled God's promise to send the Messiah.

 It shouldn't be surprising that Jesus quoted Jewish laws etc. After all;
look at his upbringing while on earth. Your note reminded me of a part my
daughter recently had in our Theocratic Ministry school. In her part she
discussed the account of Jesus, when he was 12 years old; Luke 2:41-50.
As regards your question you might notice verses 46,47. Jesus clearly took
in and retained what he learned so it's not surprising that he would later
quote laws etc. to make appropriate points. This was one of Jesus' teaching
styles. He used that which was familiar to people to make his points. In
many cases it was through illustrations, sometimes through quotes that others
would recognize.
