185.0. "Online Bible" by CVG::THOMPSON (Semper Gumby) Thu Mar 14 1991 14:03

A number of other conferences (CATHOLIC-THEOLOGY, and the other
CHRISTIAN conference) have pointers to on-line Bibles. But I suspect
that others may not see them there or want to go looking for it.
So this note is for discussion of the availability of the Bible
    on-line. Particularly on the EASYNET.

185.1DECWindows BOOKREADER Bible - KJVCVG::THOMPSONSemper GumbyThu Mar 14 1991 14:0576
Here is CVG::WORK1:[THOMPSON]BIBLE_README.TXT. It is my standard everything
you want or need to know about getting and using the DECwindows Bookreader
version of the Bible. The location and use of a prepared command file for
copying the relevant files is several paragraphs away.

The Bookreader version of the Bible (A King James Version) requires
DECwindows and the DECwindows Bookreader application that comes with
DECwindows. It also requires a DECwindows workstation or DECwindows
terminal. There are a number of ways to start the Bookreader. One is
from DCL using the command RUN SYS$SYSTEM:DECW$BOOKREADER. The other is
from your applications menu. If it is not defined in your applications
menu you can add it from the CUSTOMIZE APPLICATIONS MENU. Use the
RUN command above as your Menu Command:

If have trouble reading the Bookreader files (are getting an error or the
Bookreader is hanging) make sure the BOOKBROWSER PAK is installed. A command
file (called BOOKBROWSER.COM) is on the CD on-line documentation CD
that you may have. If you don't have this command file but find you need it
send mail.

There are several locations you place the Bible files. If you have
write access and the system managers permission you may place them in
the standard DECW$BOOK: directory. This may not be possible or considered
optimal as there are many files. You may place the files in any other
directory and define the logical DECW$BOOK: to point to them. Assuming
you are placing them in DISK$FOO:[MYAREA.BIBLE] you would use the following
command to do this:

$ DEFINE DECW$BOOK SYS$COMMON:[DECW_BOOK],DISK$FOO:[MYAREA.BIBLE]

This assumes there are no other directories in the search list. This command
will only define the search tree you you. If you want to set it up for all
users you will need privileges and use the /SYSTEM/EXE qualifiers.

At this time you can copy the files you need to what ever area you want. The
command file: CVG""::WORK1:[THOMPSON]BIBLE_COPY.COM will copy all the files
you need. It defaults to copying to DECW$BOOK: but you can edit it to point
to any other location. The command file uses FTSV the network spool copy
by default. If you do not have that tool installed remove the line that
defines the copy command. NOTE: The various files take around 90,000 blocks
so getting them all may tax your resources.

The next step will be to make sure that a DECW$BOOKSHELF file points to
the Bible files. Three DECW$BOOKSHELF files are copied to your target area by:

CVG""::WORK1:[THOMPSON]BIBLE_COPY.COM.

They are:

KING-JAMES.DECW$BOOKSHELF
NEW-TESTAMENT.DECW$BOOKSHELF
OLD-TESTAMENT.DECW$BOOKSHELF

There are several ways you can add these. If you do not have write access
your best option is probable to RENAME KING-JAMES.DECW$BOOKSHELF (still
in your target area which should be in your DECW$BOOK search list) to
LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF. This will cause the Old and New Testament entries
to show up at the bottom of the Library window that the Bookreader will bring
up. Or you can create a LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file that contains a line like:

SHELF\KING-JAMES\The Bible (King James Version)

which will point to the KING-JAMES shelf which will point to the Old and New
Testaments. If you have write access to your system wide
DECW$BOOK:LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF you can just add a line to that file. Or
to an other existing DECW$BOOKSHELF file in the tree.

You should now be all set. Send comments and/or questions to CVG::THOMPSON.
I'll get to them as time permits.

		Alfred Thompson

Final Note: A number of the larger books of the Bible come in two parts.
This is because I ran it to some hard upper limits in the number and size
of index entries. The BIBLE_COPY.COM file and the DECW$BOOKSHELF file it
copies will copy all needed parts.

    Alfred,

What if you don't have all that windowing capability? I'm on
a plain ol' VT220, for example.

Also, would be interested in a word_search capability in an ON_LINE
    BIBLE. Any recommendations?

185.3It's all out there I just have to remember where :-(2B::THOMPSONWhich side did you say was up?Thu Mar 14 1991 21:5313
    Richard,

There is an ASCII program and database on the net. I used it to create
the Bookreader files. I'll try and find a pointer to it. Or perhaps
I'll package it myself. There is, I believe, a word search capability
that works with it. I'll look for that. The Bookreader version with
it's rather large concordance style index has spoiled me I'm afraid.
Still there are a lot of people without DECwindows I guess. I'm working
on a term paper due Saturday right now but if time permits I'll see
what I can dig up next week.

For those of you without DECwindows capability I present the
	following directory: LSTARK""::LSTARK$DUA0:[PUBLIC.BIBLE]

This directory holds an RMS Indexed file BIBLE.KJV and two
programs that use it. BIBLE.EXE which displays verses and
CONCORDANCE which looks things up for you. Sources are also
available there. There are two .MEM files that explain how
these programs work. I didn't write them and can not promise
to support them but if you mail me questions I'll try and help.
To answer the first question I'm sure I'll get: No I don't know
which files are optional and which ones you need but you can
use BIBLE without any of the CONCORDANCE files. Also I think
you only need CONCORDANCE.EXE and BIBLE.KJV to use the concordance.

BTW, Please don't call me by phone with questions. Also LSTARK is
my little VS 2000 so try and make these copies after 17:00 EST
	and/or on week ends.

				Alfred

I have a public domain concordance for the Atari ST. This public
domain version includes only the KJV of the Pauline epistles. You can
contact the company that produced it, Spiritware, for the full KJV
bible. Also, I'm not sure, but I believe that they (or perhaps another
company) sell an NIV version. I have run the program, and it is very
easy to use (it uses the GEM interface).

If anyone has any information about MS-DOS, Mac, or Amiga concordance
programs, please post information about them here.

Christian Science Reading Rooms sell an on-line concordance to the
King James Version. I'm sure it runs on MS-DOS, not as sure about
Apple. I'm working from memory, but my initial reaction was that
it was fairly expensive (however, it does include full Bible text
and some wonderful search and print features).

I was looking through the back pages of an Amiga magazine today and
spotted a couple for that machine, though I didn't investigate either
in any depth. S.O.G.W.A.P. publishes one for the Commodore C=64/C=128.

I've seen PC based Bible packages in a number of book stores both
religious and secular. I haven't paid much attention as they tend
not to be supported by my Rainbow. :-( A number of versions including
the NIV (which I'd love to have online) are available. There are of
course copyright concerns with bringing most of them on the EASYNET
though. I've thought about suggesting that DEC publish online
Bibles (I understand that KO may know someone who holds a couple
of copyrights) but I suspect that the ROI may be too low.

185.9Bookreader Concordance Now Available !!CVG::THOMPSONWhich side did you say was up?Thu Mar 28 1991 20:0134
Assuming you've actually using the Bookreader Bible you've
probably run into a situation where you wanted to look up a
reference. Now if you knew what book the reference was in it
was fairly easy. You just used the index in the book. If you
didn't know what book it was in you had to go book by book.
Or wait until you could get to a paper Bible. Or you just
gave up. Well that may all change for you now.

An online whole Bible concordance now exists and can be yours
for the cost of copying about 77,500 blocks worth of files to
	your local DECW$BOOK: device.

The concordance consists of a BIBLE_INDEX.DECW$BOOKSHELF file
and 25 letter books (no "X" entries right now. Should there be?).
You may copy all these files using the command:

	$ COPY CVG""::DECW$BOOK:BIBLE_INDEX*.DECW* DECW$BOOK:

Although I'd use FTSV (SPOOL) as this will take a while. Then add
	the line

SHELF\BIBLE_INDEX\Whole Bible Concordance (For The Authorized Translation)

To the top level Bible DECW$BOOK file. You should then be all set.

Unfortunately you can't click on one of these entries and jump
right to the verse in the Bible Book itself but at least you
	can find pointers easier.

Comments on this and the Bookreader Bible are always welcome.

I now have an NIV Bible and concordance installed on my Atari ST at
home. The concordance program is produced by Spiritware, which is
associated with the Fifteenth Avenue Bible Church in Seattle. I admit
that I have not used a software concordance before, but I am quite
impressed with the user interface (which takes advantage of Atari's GEM
windowing environment) and speed of this one. You can search for
keywords and get back a list of verses in one window on the left side
of the screen; by selecting any of those verses with your mouse, the
relevant section of the Bible appears in a second window, with the
search words highlighted. You have control over which books to search
(or use the entire Bible if you wish), and you can also (if you wish)
bring up any book of the Bible without doing a search. You can select
and save relevant verses to a file for later use.

There is a demo of a Bible search program for the Macintosh, recently
posted to comp.binaries.mac and now apparently available on the E-Net
through the notesfile ROUTES::MACONLINE (note 2155). I downloaded it
to my Mac emulator on my Atari, and I was extremely impressed. The
demo comes with the King James version of the Gospels; you can order
the full Bible version from the developer. I'm not positive, but it
appears that the daily Bible verse utility has been turned off in the
demo (at least I couldn't figure out how to access it from the menu.)
The software will create multiple separate windows for various pattern
matches, and you can build your own permanent topical indexes out of
    the verses that are found.

Here is the introduction from the help text:

Hello, my name is Kim D. Geiger and you are reading the
documentation for a great Bible program called Berean Bible Search.
Berean had it roots in the IBM-PC in 1988. I looked at a few of
the Bible programs on the market at that time and decided I could
write one that was better and ask less money for it. The name
Berean came from the scripture in Acts 17:10-11 where it says those
from Berea "...searched the scriptures daily". Berean for the
IBM-PC was finished in 1989 and has since blessed many people .
Because I am in full-time ministry myself, I don't have a lot of
money to spend on advertising, so Berean has been spread around by
word of mouth, BBS's, and has made its way into a few shareware
libraries. I still think it is the best one for the best price on
        the market.

Then, in 1989, I got turned onto the Macintosh. In fact, the
ministry I work for changed gears and decided to get Macintosh
instead of IBM for a network. What a machine the Mac is! So I
decided to rewrite Berean for the Mac. It has been almost a year
and well over 1000 hours in the making but I am well pleased with
the final result. I hope you are as well. Given the Mac
interface, I was able to do a lot more with the Mac version.

Berean is offered as a shareware program with a suggested price of
$50 for the program and the first version; $20 for each subsequent
version. Being in full-time ministry, however, I know what it is
like to be tight financially. Therefore, if you cannot afford the
full price, I will give you the program for whatever you can
afford. I have already sent out copies of my IBM version for less
than the suggested price and will continue to do so. If you can
afford the price, however, please send it. It will help me to end
the program to those who truly can't afford it.

If you like Berean, tell your friends about it. There is a version
available for the IBM as well as the Mac. I have a demo available
for both computers which is a copy of the full program, but with
only the four gospels. If you have questions, problems, ideas, or
wish to order a copy of Berean, please write me:

Two other things I forgot to mention about this package are that it has
an approximate match feature on searches (which I haven't tried out), and
a facility for defining the fonts for the verse names, verse text,
    highlighted passages, etc.

Subj:	CBRS retrieval-by-mail: simple prototype now available

A simple retrieval-by-mail interface to CBRS is now
implemented for retrieval from a text database consisting of
the text of the King James Version of the Bible.

You request a search by sending an electronic mail message to
lgp30::bibleserver with the word "find" (or "search" or
"query") in the subject line. The very first line of the
text of this message must be the query in the CBRS "internal"
query language*. Any additional lines are ignored.

If you send a message to lgp30::bibleserver with the word
"help" in the subject, it will respond with an overview of
this query language. To get you started: form-insensitive
word match is specified by enclosing any form of the word in
        apostrophes (single quotes).

        Two starter examples, the query:

        	'sanctify'

matches "sanctify", and "sanctification", as well as other
forms. To require two or more words occurring in the same
        sentence, follow the following example:

        	sentence ('vision', 'perish')

The results are sent by return E-mail to the sending address.
Please note that not a lot of work has gone into this yet.
The results are essentially the output (slightly modified) of
the demo_query program shipped with the CBRS field test kit,
plus an excerpt of the documents (each chapter is a separate
document in the CBRS index) centered around the hits.

I intend to put more thought and work into this (hopefully in
that order!) to see if this can be made into a useful adjunct
to other, more highly interactive methods for document
        retrieval.

I welcome all suggestions as well as help in making
        improvements and mounting other databases.

        More to follow.

I have rebuilt the DECWINDOWS Bookreader Bible. The reason for re-building
was to add and process additional index entries. The new indexes have more
words for a total of perhaps 5,000 new entries. If the current indexes
are meeting your needs there is no need to take a new copy. However, I
added entries for a number of words that I had tried to look up over the
last 9 months. I am always willing to add entries for others if informed
of a need BTW.

        Alfred,

Have you tried this in conjunction with the new
BookreaderPlus, which is now in internal field test?

The reason I ask is that BookreaderPlus supports full word
searching of the text (as well as index).

(For information on the BookreaderPlus Version 1.0 IFT, see
note 2.5 in the VIA::BOOKREADER conference.)

Nope, haven't had time to yet. And I don't control the s/w installed
on the CVG cluster so it may be a while. I think it may be installed
on our "sandbox" cluster but haven't had much free time lately.

I have recently updated the Bible software archives I keep with new and/or
expanded software packages for the PC. Some of these are windows based while
others are DOS. I haven't tried all of them out yet. I've been using an
earlier version of God's Word For Windows and really like it. I'm in the
process of upgrading my home system now. I just wanted to pass this
information out to other people who may be interested.

All the software below is available from
    LSTARK::LSTARK$DKA200:[PUBLIC.BIBLE.MSDOS]

most, perhaps all of it, is also available from TRINTY::PD1:[MSDOS.BIBLE]
which also has a few things I haven't copied.

Feel free to pass this on to others or to post in in relevant notes
    conferences.

ftp site sunsite.unc.edu, but I can't get there right now. Even when I
can get there, getting the files is very slow. It would be easier if I
could get them from a DEC directory.

    Thanks,

What translation is it? I already have the KJV in text format online.
If it's worthwhile, I could snag it.
