531.0. "Is Disney Welcome Centre in Ocala any good? Discounts?" by TROOA::HANDY (L. Handy, MCSE DTN 626-3210) Wed Apr 09 1997 16:08

I will be taking my family to WDW in a few weeks, and I was wondering
if anyone has used the Disney travel services in Ocala, Florida (just
    off I75)?

I read from the rec.arts.disney.parks news group that on a good day,
one may be able to reserve packages at Disney resorts for up
to 45% off the regular rate.

I have my Magic Kingdom club card, but when I tried to
book rooms in Poly, Wilderness Lodge, etc. either there were no rooms
left, or the price was way out of my ballpark!

On top of that, I am losing my shirt with the ~40% Canadian/U.S. $
    exchange rate!

P.S. Any Canadians know where to book Disney resorts in
Canadian dollars? Or does anyone know how to get great rates on
Disney resorts (other than MKC card)?

    Thanks!
    Lyndon

The MKC rooms have been sold out for some time now, according to what I've read
in the newsgroups. You might want to try getting booked in at the All Star
Music or Sports resorts, since they have the most reasonable prices. Your best
chance will be to call each day at 7am to try and get a cancellation from the
previous day.

531.2Ocala information wantedTROOA::HANDYL. Handy, MCSE DTN 626-3210Wed Apr 09 1997 20:0612
Thanks. I was offerred some packages as above, including some w/ the MKC
discounts applied, but the rates seemed relatively high-, ie.
    $1400.00 for 3 nights (including 2 adult + 1 child 4 park hopper passes)
seems a little steep doesn't it? The AS resorts are not really our
    thing (2 very small children).

I am specifically looking for more details about the "Ocala" discounts,
where the discounts are much more substantial. Has anyone else tried
this option? Apparently this option is at Ocala only, and only
    in-person reservations are accepted.

    Lyndon,

I thought I read somewhere that the Ocala discounts fall somewhere
between regular and MKC prices...like about halfway. If you get
any discounts beyond 5% I'd grab them.

MKC discounted rooms are at a premium this year and cancellations
do not add these rooms to the available supply. The CRO has stated that
if a booked MKC discounted room is cancelled the room goes back to it's
    non-discounted price.

I usually don't favor packages but at this point I would suggest
calling some travel agents to see what's available. They may have
scoffed up some MKC rooms awhile back and may have some decent deals
    for this year.

If anyone comes across more information on the Ocala discounts please
    post them here.

    Thanks,

    Mike

My additional suggestion would be to book something before you get there;

If the Ocala discounts can only be purchased at Ocala you run a really good
chance of finding nothing available. Booking something will at least give you a
place to stay and you can always cancel if Ocala does have something.

fwiw,

531.5Book Ahead....Good AdviceDONVAN::SCOPAThu Apr 10 1997 17:2315
I plan on getting there a day before my reservations begin and calling
the CRO to get an onsite room for one night.

For one night I'll take a shot. Scott's right. You should have
    something waiting for you.

In my case I plan to play hardball with the CRO. If they have real
expensive rates for only one night I may just tell them the range I was
looking for and if they can't meet my price then I'll stay offsite.

I'm gambling that the reps will have been taught to give in and book
rooms at a lower rate rather than have the rooms not bring in revenue
    for the evening.
