428.0. "Thrill Rides" by BRAT::STEVENS_M () Fri Aug 26 1994 13:51

    In reading Claude's note and Mike's trip report about the TZTOT, I got
    to thinking about thrill rides at Disney. I know this has been
    discussed ealier, but I'm wondering...

    Will Disney begin to incorporate "thrill rides" into the parks? Do you
    think that when/if WDW decides to add a ride similar to the Matterhorn
    in DL that it will be upgraded to compete with coasters in some of the
    other large amusement parks?

    Any thoughts?

428.1No drops for me!GRANMA::JAMESFri Aug 26 1994 15:0315
    IMHO, I hope Disney does not get carried away with the thrill rides. I
    am NOT a thrill ride person. I have done Space Mtn and Splash Mtn only
    once so I can say I have done it. There is no way I see myself on
    TZTOT.

    The draw to WDW for me are the attractions like Pirates and Haunted
    were I can relax and see whats going on. I have tolerated Big Thunder
    three or four times, because my daughter loves it, and I know there are
    things I have not seen.

    I am not saying Disney should not cater to the thrill ride people,
    obviously the market is there, I only hope they also continue to create
    the attractions they became for.

428.2Disney and Thrill RidesWREATH::SCOPAFri Aug 26 1994 16:2432
    Mark,

    Actually, Michael Eisner has been asked this many times over the past
    several years and this has led to the emergence of attractions like
    Splash Mountain, TZTOT, and Alien Encounter.

    I think that Disney's approach to thrill rides will be similar to what
    Sega is doing with Virtual Reality.

    Recently Sega opened a Virtual Reality theme park and one of the
    attractions is a VA roller coaster ride. On this attraction you sit in
    a hydrolic device that simulates a roller coaster ride.

    You wear a helmet that offers you visual and audible representations of
    the ride. I understand that there are monsters that pop up from time to
    time.

    I think we'll see more of this from Disney.

    Of course we may still see Mount Fuji sometime in Epcot. This
    attraction may be a roller coaster type attraction for Epcot.

    Boardwalk is under construction. I'll see if I can get some info on
    the attractions planned for that theme park.

    The Disney Company may be caught between a rock and a hard place
    because on the one hand they want to stick with the traditional
    attractions that offer the entire family a chance to enjoy them
    together yet they can feel the need to keep up with places like
    Universal Studios and Six Flags as they add new thrill rides.

428.3The split personality of Splash MountainUSDEV::HERRINGWed Aug 31 1994 12:5016
   Having recently experienced Splash Mountain for the first time, I can see
   how much it represents the conflict in Disney planning on this issue. On
   one hand it is a pleasant journey through the mythical world of "Song of
   the South," filled with lovable characters and happy music, the traditional
   Disney treat. But that is not what all the talk and excitement is about.
   The signature feature of Splash Mountain is "the plunge". Thrill seekers
   may get bored by the Brear Rabbit preliminaries, while small kids and other
   non-thrill types are forced to avoid the thing all together.

   I agree with Mike on the potential of virtual reality. I consider Star
   Tours to be a step in that direction, and that type of simulation obviously
   has much more opportunity for creative applications. I am not a thrill
   ride fan, but I would do Star Tours again, not Splash Mountain.

428.4VR FlexibilityWREATH::SCOPAWed Aug 31 1994 14:408
    Steve,

    Also VR offers the flexibility of the quick change. This could mean
    that we both could go into a VR attraction but with a push of a button
    you could program one thrill ride (let's say a roller coaster type
    ride) and I could program another (Star Tours type ride).

    Mike
428.5I like it....ODIXIE::ROBINSONWed Sep 07 1994 16:433
    I guess I am the odd one out on the Splash Mountain issue. I find that
    is just the right combination of character adventure and thriller ride.
    I would like to see future Disney rides be similar and mixture.
428.6POWDML::BUCKLEYwhy do we have to fall from grace?Fri Oct 07 1994 18:1514
    Disney has ALREADY started incorporating "thrill" rides into their
    parks, beucase that is what people want!

    Lets reference Euro Disney, which debuted the Indiana Jones Adventure
    ride in 1993, which is essentially a single loop steel roller coaster,
    and who just debuted Discovery Mountain last month, which is an
    enclosed LOOPING roller coaster (no, it's not a Space Mountain clone).

    The French have already forced WED to start installing more thrilling
    rides into ED, and I think the same is in store for the parks in the
    U.S. and Tokyo. Again, it's what the marketplace is calling for.

	Having just returned from WDW and thouroughly enjoying Splash Mountain
	and reliving it on video. I was amazed at how long the ride was
	(10 mins). As much as I enjoy the thrill rides I would not endure the
	queueing if the ride was just the drop into the briar patch.

	I think Disney have gone the right way and provided the thrill but
	given it the Disney touch with the storybook build up. Even after 5
	or 6 rides I still enjoyed the story and spotted little things I missed
	on the previous runs.

    Hello all

    I am going to florida in March and I am looking for some advice on
    which places support the biggest and the fastest rides.

    I hope you can be of some help!

Hi Craig.

DisneyWorld has only a couple of "thrill" rides.

Busch Gardens in Tampa has 6 or 7, depending on your definition of "thrill."
The Kumba Coaster is incredible.

    Bill,

    Cheers for your reply on the Thrill rides at WDW.

    Do you know or does anybody else know where I can obtain some leaflets
    etc on the best them parks around that sort of area. I am staying in
    Kisseme, so I would appreciate any info possible.

    Regards

428.11Tower of TerrorMKLC::SHELTONThu Dec 22 1994 19:314
    Hi, FYI...Having been to Disney in October, I was surprised nobody
    mentioned the "Tower of Terror" at MGM Studios. I don't want to give
    anything away, but the name of the ride suits it just fine! Just a
    hint, it's based on the "Twilight Zone"...
428.12Keep it simple...MAIL1::BLACKMANAs always..High on Life!Wed Dec 28 1994 12:2614
    I'd like WDW to keep things the way they are...just a couple of thrill
    rides. I for one do not enjoy having my stomach ending up in my
    throat! I know that I am part of a minority on this, but the other
    rides should be able to curb peoples appetite for "the plunge". Such
    as a VR ride, something about knowing that I am on the ground, kinda
    helps.

    Also, it would be great if the park can be enjoyed without telling little
    Bobby that he can't go on this ride 'cause he is to small.

    Can anyone compile a list of the rides that have thrills? I want to
    know which ones to avoid.
    thanks

    I would add Body Wars in Epcot to the Thrill Ride list. I was more
    nauseous in that ride than some of the others mentioned.

    Thanks for the information...about Body Wars at Epcot, I just don't get
    it. I must have one of the worst stomachs around, but I liked this
    ride. Is this the ride were you are in a simulated space ship and
    traveling through the body, kinda like the movie? I believe the whole
    thing in something much like a flight simulator. Pardon my WDW
    greeness!

    respectfully speaking, you have to temper any advice on what is
    considered a thrill ride,
    I'm the biggest chicken I know, yet I'd never but half the rides
    mentioned in the 'thrill catagory'.
    each person has their own threshold. I'd never think of space
    mountain, yet find BTR calm and easy to take.
    and star tours, body wars, are only simulators. weak stomack maybe,
    but thrill ride, no.
    Don't avoid anything without trying it first. and the warning signs
    are there to add to the hype.
    just my opinion,
    ed

428.18Movement and PositionSAPPHO::DUBOISTrust in God, but tie your camelWed Dec 28 1994 19:375
It also depends where you were sitting. I believe on Body Wars and
Star Tours that it's not as bad if you are in the center. The edges and
corners have the most movement.

428.19I hope they quit building simulator rides.HOBBLE::SWEATTSat Jan 07 1995 14:4310

    	Almost all the simulator rides make me ill. The movements are
    simply too extreme.
    	However, I do like most of the thrill rides at Disney. While a
    country carnival may have a roller coaster that is just as thrilling as
    the Space Mountain, having that coaster in the dark with all the
    visual/audio additions really makes the ride special.

	Watch out for Back to the Future...I strained my shoulder and back
muscles on that ride. I was in the front, on the right hand side against
the door. I kept getting slammed into the metal...next time (sure I'll go
on it again!) I'll sit in the middle!

    Hi,

    I loved all of te simulated rides, didn't try any real thrill rides.
    My wife did and loved them also. Back to the Future was very rough, I
    kept hitting my head on the back of my seat, (I was sitting in the
    back). But, Oh what a great ride it was.
