294.0. "How do you get from home to the airport?" by BROKE::LUND () Mon Jan 13 1992 12:46

How do you get from your house to the airport and then once your
WDW trip is over and you've flown back home, how to you get from
the airport back to your house???

I couldn't find a note dedicated to this topic; or a note that had
alot of response dealing with this topic. Mostly it's discussed
here and there, especially in trip reports... So if a moderator
can find a better place to put it... that's ok with me..
There is a note on transfers from the airport to WDW, but not
    from home to the airport...

I came up with the following options, this is based on going
from Southern NH to Logan (Boston MA)... which is about 1hr
    drive (if you are not doing it during normal rush hours :^) );
and based on an 11 day vacation, for 2 people.

    - Drive to Boston, park your car in one of the PARK/SHUTTLE/FLY
type places and then drive yourself home...

    	- Cost about $99. The best I could find right now was $9/day
    	- How much would parking at the airport cost for 11 days?
    	- If you don't like driving to/from Boston, like us,
    	   this option isn't used.
    	- You do have your own car.

    - Take something like Hudson Bus Lines...

    	- Someone else drives you.
    	- They stop at several other places along the way
    	- Don't count on the time they say is sufficient. They normally
pick a departure time from NAshua that is less than
2 hrs from your flight time. We listened to them once
and got to the airport 15 minutes before our flight,
as they make a number of stops, and we hit traffic.
        - Cost is about 32-34/RT per person; $64-$68 for two.
    	- You need to get from your house to one of their stops and
then leave your car for 11 days. It's possible to
leave it at ZK or at the Sheraton, I prefer the ZK
parking lot if it is 11 days.
    	- The limos leave logan about once an hour; so you may
need to wait up to an hour for another one going
your way. If your flight is late evening; you may
    		miss your last flight.

    - Take a REAL limo!

    	- One that offers share-a-ride
    	- Picks you up from the house and has a limo waiting within
20 minutes of when your flight lands.
    	- If there is noone going to/from the airport when you are
you still get the share a ride price and the limo
    		to yourselves.
    	- Max limit of 4 people in the limo.
    	- They come to the door and bring your luggage out to the
    		limo.
    	- Costs $49 one way for 2. so $98/RT, they take a check.
    		plus a tip.
    	- Ends up close to the cost of driving yourself to Boston
    		and parking.
    	- About $30 more than the Hudson Bus Lines type ride; but
    		(IMHO) worth it
    	- $20 extra to head to Logan before 4:30am or return from
    		Logan after midnight (I think)

    - Find someone else to drive you and pick you up

    	- We have never tried this, except once on a return trip,
because we were coming back from UTAH, and our flight
was late enough to miss the last Hudson Bus Lines. Our
flight was 2 hours late, and our friend had to wait till
    	  1:15am when we arrived.

    	- After that we have choosen one of the other options,
normally the second, but last time we did the
    		limo.

    	- If you wanted to leave your house at 5:00 am to
arrive at Logan by 6:00 for a 7:00 flight on a
Thursday AM, and then your return flight is
scheduled to land at 6:30pm on a Sunday night,

    	     would you:

    		- Find a friend and/or disney-holic to drive you?
    		- What would you offer them for their services
    	   		(door-to-door)?
    		- If you were going to spend $65-$100 for driving
yourself, or taking a limo, what would you
    			offer/bring back in equivalent items
    			from the world in exchange?

    	- If you don't mind driving to Boston and getting up at 4amish
to take someone to Logan and then pick them up on a Sunday
early evening, what would make it worthwhile?

    	   - The chance to see a fellow Disney-holic off to WDW
    		with all their excitment.
    	   - The chance to be the first to see them when they get
back, barely 4-5 hrs after they left WDW, all the
new/interesting things they saw; Catch their reactions
before reality really sets in, before they've had
a chance to find out how far they got behind while
    		they were gone?
    	   - I'll drive you then you can drive me, unless one party
    		doesn't drive to Boston?
    	   - Something or things from the world, negiotiated between
the two parties, something that you wanted but was
out of your souvenir budget, but within the amount
budgeted by the other party to get to/from the airport,
possibly even including some fresh made/baked goods
    		from somewhere in the world?

    Good idea for a topic.

In the past I have had relatives or friends take us to and from Logan
airport. No problems except for the last trip, the person was late and
     we only
made it to Logan 10 minutes before flight time! What a mad dash that
was! I have taken Hudson Bus Lines once - no complaints, I was there
    in plenty of time.

As for myself, I've taken people in and out of Logan airport many times
and am not intimidated by it. I think it could be made worth my while
    to if necessary.

294.2We prefer Park and FlyTYGER::GIBSONMon Jan 13 1992 13:3311
We use the Park and Fly option. It's not quite as expensive as it
looks. They have a weekly rate of $50, so from Saturday 6:00 AM to a week
from Sunday 9:00 PM cost us $68 (1 week for $50 plus 2 days at $9).
Your eleven days would be 1 week at $50 plus 4 days at $9 or $86. The
car goes when you want to go. No waiting or delays.

We have had friends or relatives pick us up several times, but each
time our flight was late or some other complication. I hate
inconveniencing people or making them wait.

294.3Rental car to/from airportSTAR::DZIEDZICMon Jan 13 1992 15:0413
A "non-obvious" "drive yourself" alternative; rather than driving
YOUR car and parking at the airport for an extended length of time,
consider RENTing a car for the drive TO the airport, and another
for the drive FROM the airport. The rental costs for two one-way
rentals aren't much more than the cost to park for a week or more,
plus you don't leave YOUR vehicle in an airport parking lot (and
suffer the ignomities of freezing cold car/piles of snow and the
    possibilities of theft/damage/whatever).

In eastern MA/southern NH it often works out cheaper to rent one-way
than to take a limo one-way.

Or you can do what I'm doing, skip Logan and fly out of Manchester, and
only pay $4/day long term and not worry about your car since everyone I
know who has used Manchester has had no problem.

When I checked into airfare last fall both Logan and Manchester were
    the same price.

In the past I used the limo and rent one way Avis.

re: .3, I hadn't thought of doing one-way rentals; We still have to
drive and then would have to go the night before to rent the car
and then drop it off before cathcing our 7:00am flight. I'll call
and see what the one-way rentals are from Nashua to Logan; unless
    	someone knows.

    re: .4; The northwest non-stop specials are out of Logan for $218RT;
they don't do out of Manchester, we would have had to take a
shuttle from Manchester to Boston; which wasn't worth the time.
The fares currently lowest priced fares from Manchester or Boston
are the same but were in the 360/380 RT per person. So the
$218, with up to $50/person RT from house to Logan is still
    	alot less (268) than the 382/402 current fare (360/380 + 1/2
the $44 for parking in manchester). Yes we could have just
gotten that fare, and then hoped they'd offer a lower rate
and our flights would qualify to be reduced, but not worth
the chance. If we could have gotten a RT fare in the $260
range from Manchester we would have taken it!

    Keep up the good info!

Hmmm..last time I flew someplace (out of Manchester) I checked to see what
one-way rentals would be if I picked up the car the night before. It was very
expensive, something like $50 or more. We ended up just taking a cab for
$20 (we live in Goffstown). Even a limo to Boston was cheaper than a rental.
I would never park in Manchester's lot. I don't know what security is like
now, but about a year ago break-ins were very common.

    Annie,

When your going during a Spring School Vacation week for NH like I am,
which is 1 week after Easter this year, you are very limited to
specials if any, and flying out of Manchester makes sense.

    re. .6

    Jenna,

When I said one-way rentals, I meant to Logan, I'd take the taxi/Limo
to Manchester (I live in Goffstown too) before taking a one-way rental.
As to the security, they have beefed it up over the past year, added
security gates and such. But even then those folks who went on
business that I know over the past couple of years or so and left their
cars had no problem. Either the people I know very very lucking or ...

Since we live in MA flying out of Boston is more convenient for us,
plus there is a chance of a nonstop to Orlando. From Manchester there
is at least a stop, if not a plane change. We usually leave very early,
before traffic is an issue, so we make it from Billerica in 30-45 minutes.

The security at Park and Fly in Boston is very good. We have used it
for years and never had a problem. There is a high fence, it is well
lit, and it is patrolled 24 hours a day.

I would NEVER leave my car in the Logan garage. Friends have experienced
theft, vandalism, and hit and run.

The DEC rate of one way rentals from the Sheraton Tara to Logan and vice versa
is about $31.50.

I use this method all the time when going on a business trip with more than
one person or a personal trip with my family. It is the least expensive method
if you are staying a week and don't have a friend to drive you in/pick you up.

> - Find someone else to drive you and pick you up

There is something to be said about having friends (or relatives) who are
close enough, both physically and emotionally, so that such impositions
are not an issue. While there have been times when the most convenient
methods were to drive in or take a limo, I like knowing that I have friends
that I can count on, and that they can count on me, and not just for
trips to Logan for vacations. So the answer to

>	- If you don't mind driving to Boston and getting up at 4amish
> to take someone to Logan and then pick them up on a Sunday
> early evening, what would make it worthwhile?

is the knowledge that they would do the same for me.

    Annie,

Avis has a really good one-way rental to Logan using the DEC rate. For
the latest DEC rates for Avis, which is around $33 from Manchester to
Logan if I remember can be found in VTX TRAVEL, the Corp number can be
found there as well as in the Car Rental note in here. The nice thing
with Avis's DEC rate is you can use it for personnal travel and the CDW
is included as well. However for the time I going in April/May it was
cheaper to go with the Florida promotional rate for 8 days $149 vs
    $199.

I get friends or relatives to drive me to and from the airport. But then
I live in Colorado Springs and the airport is 15 to 20 minutes away.

My dad had enough experience with late flights that he knows to call
the airlines to see if the flight is on time.

When my parents went to Hawaii, I had the honor of picking them up in
Denver (about an hour and a half away). I kept checking with the airlines.
They had a stop in San Francisco and were delayed. It worked out really
well. I got to Denver a couple of minutes before their plane landed.
At that time, parking for the first half hour was free. (BTW, this was
a late night flight so I didn't have to worry about rush hour traffic,
    etc.)

My girlfriend and I are leaving tomorrow (1/15) - we're flying from
the Worcester airport instead of Logan because it's more convenient
to get to and we don't have to hazzle with the traffic. The
disadvantage is we need to make a transfer in Pittsburgh, only a
40min. layover, it's not too bad. My friend's mother is driving us
and my husband and kids will pick us up.

I've used the Avis solution many times from southern N.H. to Logan. The
corporate rates are very reasonable as previously mentioned. Many times
I've mentioned to the Avis people that we have alot of luggage and four
plus people. In turn they would upgrade the car size and not charge us
for it. It works out to be the best way for us toget to Logan!

294.16Park and FlyWECROW::HILLPeterThu Jan 16 1992 10:4822
This is a really useful note.
I was considering the alternatives wrom Westborough Ma to Logan.

Knights limo would be $60 each way.
2*$60 = $120;

Park andd Fly seems to be the way to go at $7/day (with coupon).
9*$7 + $8 (gas and tolls) = $71

One way rental seems like a hassle picking up and dropping off the car.

There is another approach that is to get the logan express, but again there
would be hassle involved in getting to there pickup point.

I think Park and Fly is winning.

Questions:

	1) Do you have to book a space at Park and Fly?

	2) Does the Airport and Park and Fly ever run out of space at peak
	   vacation times?
294.17AAARGH::LOWELLGrim Grinning Ghosts...Thu Jan 16 1992 13:2249
Here's what we've done in the past:

    1) Hudson Limo or equivalent
        - Pick a stop which has a place for you to park your car
        - Drive your car to the stop the day you leave
        - Have a friend pick up your car if extended parking isn't
          allowed or you don't feel comfortable leaving your car;
Have your friend drop off your car before you return
        - Drive home

We took the limo from the Holiday Inn at the Amoskeag
Bridge exit off of 293 in Manchester, NH and had a neighbor
pick up and drop off our car at her convenience.

    2) Take bus to Logan
        - Use same process as above

We took the bus from the Holidy Inn on the corner Granite St.
and Elm St. in Manchester, NH. We parked our car in their
parking garage while we were gone.

If we were to fly out of Logan again, we'd consider driving
our car to the Park 'n' Ride in Londonderry and making
arrangements to have our car picked up and dropped off.

    3) Take Flight Line limo or equivalent (not sure if they're
        still in operation)

We took Flight Line from Manchester, NH to Logan. It is
similar to the Hudson Limo, you ride in a van which makes
multiple stops, but you are picked up at your house. Our
driver had trouble finding some passengers but we made it
to the airport with plenty of time to spare.

    4) Take a real limo
        - Make your reservations way in advance, especially if your
trip coincides with prom season or wedding season
        - Our limo didn't have seatbelts for the rear-facing seat.
You might want to ask about seatbelts if it concerns you.

We took a stretch limo from Derry, NH to Logan. We had 4
adults and 2 babies in car seats. The round trip cost was
about the same as 6 round trip tickets on the Hudson Limo.
In fact, I think it was less. We were somewhat cramped
but enjoyed the ride. I don't remember what company we
        used.

    re:.16

Once, when we were flying out during the week, Park and Fly was full.
If that happens, they askyou to leave your ignition key and they
double park your car. (I wasn't thrilled about the idea, but it was
late.....). As the regular spaces open, they move your car into a
space, seal the key into an envelope with your name and registration
on it, and put that in the office. When you return, you stop at the
office, they give you the key and tell you where your car is, then they
drop you off at the car. They seem to be very responsible about the
    cars.

My impression is that they run out of space more often during the week,
since business travellers use the services then. Our experience was on
a Thursday. When we left on a weekend there has never been a problem.

294.19ROWING::FEENANJay Feenan, Rdb/VMS engineeringThu Jan 16 1992 20:1621
re:-.1

They have always taken my keys when I use them (about 4 times)...especially when
I'm gone for more than 4 days.

re:.16

Although it sounds like it would be a hassle I've found that there is little
difference between park and fly and renting a car. You have to ride a shuttle
to/from the park and fly lot as well as the AVIS lot. And since I have
one of those AVIS Express Memberships the car is always right next
to the rental office and ready for me when I arrvie (actually I'm a bit
surprised by this...since these types of memberships never seem to work out as
they were intended)...

From Westborough it might be different though since my pickup/drop off for
the car is at the Sheraton Tara in Nashua and I work in Nashua so there are
no hassles picking up and dropping off the car.

Um, I don't think Mom would be too keen on that... :-)

RE a couple back: Flying out of Manchester is great. We did that last Christmas
when we went to my S.O.'s parents (they live in Sebring, but we usually fly into
Orlando). It wasn't a direct flight, though; we had to change in Boston. So
we took a little baby plane from Manchester to Boston (a 15-minute flight)
and took a Real Plane from there to Orlando. We had about a 45-minute wait
between connections, but it was worth it not to have to drive to Boston!
(Chauffeur Mom would rather drive to Manchester than Boston, anyway. :-) )

There wasn't any price difference between flying Manchester-Boston-Orlando
and Boston-Orlando (round trips), either.

FYI, when you call Park n' Fly you get a recorded message with all the
information you need on rates and how to get there. They also mention
that discount coupons are available from travel agents. I didn't have
time to try to get one, however.

Also, when we went to Park 'n Fly last Thursday, the lot looked
pretty crowded, but we managed to get a spot without much trouble.
My impression of their operation is that it's no-frills, but well-run
and dependable. They have to be, they're not the only game in town, ad
their chief advantage over the Logan garage is security and a slight
price advantage. (Though you could conceivably come back and find your

294.26Make reservations at Park-N-FlyCSSE32::GATTONWed Jan 29 1992 16:289
Last year, I decided to use Park-N-Fly during the April school vacation
week. I had used them before with good results. I , even, got a coupon
from AMEX for $1.00 off per day. When we arrived the lot was full! They
asked me if I had a reservation. I didn't. Fortunately there was
another lot down the street that could accomodate us.

So, if you plan on using Park-N-Fly, call ahead and reserve.

294.27Park n Fly and The Logan Express.WECROW::HILLPeterWed Feb 05 1992 15:1919
Logan express works out to be competative on price.

I phoned the number (1-800-23logan) mentioned earlier in theis topic and the prices
are as stated with the exception of a higher price for weekdays.
$4.00 / day parking ($24 for 7 days)
$8 each weekdayas and $5 each weekends on the bus.

The busses run until quite late, so that allows for some flight delay.

Getting there might be a problem though, I think it comes down to wanting to
control my own destiny.

By using Park'n'Fly I can leave for Boston as soon as Rowena gets home from
School (about 3:15ish) and miss most of the rush hour traffic.

I tried phoning the park'n'fly number on the Coupon I have (617-569-1644)
and a recording just gives info and says reservations are not necessary.

Does anyone have a number that gets a real person who will take reservations.

For those of you in the Baltimore/Washington area, the Park 'n Go at
the BWI airport has a Digital discounted rate of $5/day. This is a
24-hour secure lot, and the van drivers help with luggage. Also, if
you are returning and need a jump start, to replace a tire, etc.,
they will also help! Just mention that you're with DEC. We paid $40
for 8 days of parking while away at the World.

    I may be wrong but....

Last time I parked at Logan airport, it was $10 a day or $50 max for
one week. That's reasonable enough to take your own wheels. As far as
having your car vandlized or stolen, what are the odds of your car, I
wouldn't leave my Mercedes (not that I own a Mercedes) there for a week.
You probably have just a good a chance having something happening to
your car at the parking lot at work as you would Boston. I had a car
stolen out of DEC parking lot before.
Another option for those who have a few extra bucks, rent a Stretch
limo. I have seen advertisements for a little as $99. for 3 hours.
It's not that bad compared to some of the one-way rentals, aka; Logan
to Nashua for $75. thats ridiculous!

    re:-.1

Yup, there is a $50.00/week max currently at the airport. Still a
$32.50 one way rental is a deal some of the times. I just returned
from Florida this week where I was training for rowing for a week. I
came in too late for my wife to pick me up and the shuttle companies
shutter when I show up with eight foot oars (they end up charging me
for them). I just rented a car to nashua and strapped them to the
    roof.

Try calling the Airport or local taxis? Manchester Airport Authority
has put out a blue pamplet describing the services etc available, Give
Manchester Airline and Airport Info a call at (603) 624-6556, and asked
    them to send you one.

I assume your referring to the long term parking at the airport, I've
heard from several folks here in Salem who have used it for business
travel that they had no problems. Other however have heard of
break-ins, but I haven't and in the last couple of years they have
gated the area and there is now a full time attendant (at least while
    there's flights).

How many people in your party going? We found it cheaper to rent a car

My last guess would be between $16-$20 per person.

Using the corporate rate a one way rental from AVIS from the Sheraton TARA to
Logan or back is about $32.00. I use this all the time and for me it
is by far the most cost effective way.

    Jay,

That's exactly what we do, but from Merrimack!

Avis from the Merrimack Inn or whatever they call it now.

With an AVIS Preferred Card, or even as a DEC employee, you
automatically get a free upgrade to a larger vehicle which helps.

294.37Free parking at hotels??DNEAST::GENESEO_PAULThu Jul 01 1993 12:5011
Flying out of Boston on the 17th of July for two weeks in Orlando and I
am driving to Boston from Augusta, Me. I really rather not leave my car
at the airport parking lot and I hate to ask someone to spend up to
eight hours twice to drop me off and pick me up. Someone had mentioned
something about motels/hotels around the Boston airport that would let you
park your car in thier lot, shuttle you to and from the airport if you
spend the night at thier hotel. Has anyone ever done this? If so, what
hotel would you recomend and was it worth it? What are the rates for an
    overnite stay?

Thanks in Advance, Paul

RE .37 -- We did exactly that last fall when we went to Hawaii. Our travel
agent recommended a hotel in Revere and made the reservation for us. Now I'm
not sure of the name, but I think it was a Howard Johnson's...? Anyway, it
was about 15 minutes from Logan Airport. If I remember correctly, the cost
was $79 a night. We stayed there just one night and left my car there for
two weeks. They took us to the airport, and when we returned, we called them
from Logan and they came and picked us up. The car was fine (kind of dusty
from being near the highway, though).

It's not exactly the most scenic location in the world, being on a busy street
with a bunch of strip malls and near a major highway (Rte. 1), but who cares
if you're only there one night? :-) The room was adequate.

You might ask a travel agent whether they have any information; I don't know
whether Augusta-area agents will have info on these deals around Boston, but
they might. Or you could call my travel agent at the AAA Travel Agency in
South Nashua (not sure whether you have to be a AAA member, but I don't think
so), Paula Hancock, (603)891-1070 or 1-800-222-7448. She's extremely nice.
Feel free to mention my name... ;-)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I did contact my AAA agent in Augusta and she

I also got a $10.00 off per week coupon the last time I flew for
the company. It was through American Express, just prior to Thomas

It is semi related (please move if there is a better place).

I think this is a great question...bit of info.

The parking alone would cost you about $65.00 for the week at the airport. No,
I haven't done this..

How: Capital $198 R/T thru Shaws Jetaway, since their flights leave at
7:00am (yawn) we're staying over the night before at Comfort Inn,
Revere $85 and includes parking for the week. Has anyone ever
