533.0. "Disney voices" by GEMGRP::PARMLIND () Wed Apr 30 1997 15:15

I have a question about the actors that provide the voices for
Disney animated films. But first an explanation. My kids are
bi-lingual (english/swedish). We own a fair number of Disney
films that have been dubbed in Swedish. We find it's a good
way to keep the kids hearing Swedish on a regular basis.

The thing that bugs me is that the number of actors providing
the voices seems to be really limited. For example, I hear
the same voice on The Lion King (Lejon Kungen), The Little
    Mermaid, Pocahontas etc.

Does this happen in English too? I must admit I'm not that
familiar with the movies in English.

    Thanks for any insight,

    Elizabeth

Not for the lead roles. John Smith's voice was Mel Gibson, Mufasa was James
Earl Jones, Robin Williams was the voice of the Genie, etc. I can't think of
any major overlap in the full length features with the exception of the Aladdin
trilogy.

It sounds like they have a limited pool of people to draw from when dubbing into
other languages.

while we are on this topic, and this may have been covered before...

how come a song in a disney movie is sung by the person supplying the
voice for the character...but if the song goes mainstream a different
person sings it?? (i.e., vanessa williams redoing that song in
"pocohantos", and celine redoing the song in "beauty and the beast")
why doesn't the singer just voice the character and then the song
doesn't have to be done over....

Actually, this isn't always the case. The speaking voice and the singing voice
are frequently 2 different people. The voice of Aladdin didn't sing Aladdin's
songs, though Robin Williams did both the singing and speaking voice for the
Genie.

My guess as to the other part is that you'll get better air play time for a song
with a *known* voice than you will for the sometimes unknown person that does
the singing in the movie.

maybe vanessa and celine don't have time to voice-over movies, or can't
get the money they'd like from DISNEY.
