There was a Disney section in the Sunday paper (either the Boston Globe or
the Worcester Telegram) that said Disney is buiding a 1 mile race
track somewhere near the Magic Kingdom Parking area.

There will be a car race there with the top drivers. I forgot when.

The track will be far in front of the World Drive Toll Plaza.

The race is going to be held January 28. I'm going for a week and
I can't stand the wait. From the map I recieved from the travel
agent the track looked as if it was pretty close the M.K.

Just wondering - Is this going to be a permanent attraction or
just a one-shot deal?

Definitely permanent, we saw the construction in July and
the Disney Bus driver told us that races are scheduled
    	thru 1996.

I haven't heard anything about a contract with the Indy car circuit
yet. The track is definitely permanent, they will probably have all
the different style car / truck races. 110 more days till I go!

If you check out the WDW web site you can navigate through to see an
image of the track. It will host an an annual Indy 200 race.

It's pretty much IN the MK parking lot(s). One end is close to the Car
Care Center.

Seems like the location could create a lot of havoc on busy MK days, but
I suppose the Disney folks have that all worked out...

481.9Crowd control for race fans?SHRCTR::JPALMASONMon Oct 16 1995 14:354
I am wondering what affect this race on 1/28 will have on the crowds
that week?? We are heading down on 2/1-5, which is supposedly the last
week of the "slow" season. Oh no! We'll be overrun by racing
    enthusiasts :}.
481.10ABACUS::STEVENS_MMon Oct 16 1995 19:2737
-1 : The actual race is on Sunday the 28th so I think you'll be safe.
Most of us race fans get into our race cars afterwords and race home! 8^]

I've got my ticket order in (I'm as big a racing enthusiast as a
Disneyholic!) so this is the best of both Worlds for me!

Anyway the facility is a permanent structure. They are planning more
than just 1 race per year, with different types cars, not just the
    Indy cars.

Tony George, President of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has started
his own Indy Racing League to compete with the established Championship
Auto Racing Teams that are what Indy Car fans know today. They have the
premier drivers, cars, etc. like Al Unser Jr. However, that's another
    note for another conference.

Disney and Tony George, have had a long time relationship. as Disney
normally sends characters to appear in the annual 500 Festival Parade and
at events in the month of May in Indianapolis around the time of the 500.

They expect a complete sellout, and most if not all of the teams
rival league or not, are expected to be there.

I believe this is part of Eisner's current strategy to marry sports,
television (ABC, ESPN) and other media along with the Disney clout.
ESPN will have a studio, with the US AAU also building large facilities
within the park to house their yearly championships and events.

I'll be making a first hand trip report of the trip and will post it after
    I return on 2/2.
