461.0. "Family Reunion Specials at Walt Disney World" by MKOTS3::NICKERSON () Wed May 24 1995 13:46

I'm creating a new topic as I did a search on "Family" and "Reunion"
and couldn't find a note specifically about this subject. If there is
a note where this would be more appropriate, please let me know and
    I'll move this note.

My cousin and I are heavily involved in our family history and would
like to have a family reunion within the next couple of years to share
our research with the rest of the gang. We were originally thinking of
upstate NY but, I had a brainstorm about having a reunion at
Disneyworld. My sisters and my family are already planning on going
there for the 25th Anniversary in 1997. Before I offer this as an
option to the family, I was wondering if anyone else had done this and,
also, if Disney might offer some type of special Reunion package for
    families. I know there's a department for Weddings...maybe they'ed
    handle this too?

Any advice would be welcomed. I want to get a letter out to the family
by early summer so that reservations could be made by late summer.\

    Thanks!

    Linda,

I'm not aware of any special family reunion packages from Disney or
the MKC. I think your best bet would be to coordinate a trip with
your family members who are interested in going to WDW for the reunion.

If you decide to do this then one person should be in charge of booking
the entire family down there. Usually the CRO cannot guarantee
adjoining rooms but if you have a large group going down AND you book
early you may be able to get rooms close to one another.

Again, I'm not aware of any Family Reunion packages but I'm sure
someone could customize one for you.

Remember, plan early, and have just one person handle the hotel
reservations. Let everyone else take care of their transportation and
    ticket needs.

Caution: Be alert of the difficulties of 'touring' with different
families with different age kids and different interests. example
small kids will want to ride dumbo, the teens space mountain. neither
groups may be willing to wait. Others like me, perfer sitting on a
bench and people watch, while others want to run attraction to
attraction. And I really can't belive it, but some people don't like
Small World. I think Disney holics could tour ok, but if your going to
blow $5Ks on a vacation, you don't need the troubles. I personally
would not go there with my relatives even though I like each one.

There is an area in Fort Wilderness the near
River Country where they seem to cater to groups.

We saw a family re-union in progess there last summer.

My property manager co-ordinates the rental of private homes in the
Disneyworld area for family reunions. They have several homes for rent
in the same subdivision which facilitates impromptu parties as well as
the main event. If you are interested, give me a call and I will put
you in touch with them. Maureen Robinson 404-844-8628

    Ed,

I agree. The larger the group the more diversified the interests.
If this reunion is pulled off it would be best to split up during the
day and maybe meet for lunch or even a...a bash...

...yeah that's the ticket...have a reunion bash at Hoop Dee Doo.

They still talk about the Birthday Bash of '92 down around Pioneer
    Hall.

You might want to check into the Vacation Club. I think they have multi-bedroom
suites that hold up to 12 people. Getting a few of those could work out for
a reunion visit.

I agree about not trying to keep everyone together in the parks all the time.
Making plans for particular meals, dinner shows, and water parks together but
going separate ways otherwise might work out better.

My friend called down about room discounts for big groups, and I believe they
do have them if you're booking enough rooms. I think the number was 10.

461.7Thanks so far....MKOTS3::NICKERSONWed May 24 1995 17:5120
Thanks for the suggestions so far...the Vacation Club was where we were
planning on staying for our smaller family group so I'll check with
    them on a larger group.

We would never try to keep everyone together all day every day.
Personally, I like going with alot of people because if you don't want
to go to a particular spot and your kids do, you can usually find
someone to take them! The age range in the family is mid-eighties all
the way down to some potential newborns by 1997 with several "plateaus"
inbetween. What I was thinking of proposing was "generational
get-togethers" - ie - all first cousins plan a night out, all
grandparents plan a special day, etc. Everyone could stay for as long
or short a time as they'd like. We'd have a core time of 4-5 days for
everyone and then people could get there earlier or stay later on their
    own.

Gotta get going....keep the thoughts coming - I promise to let everyone
know if we go through with this!

I saw at least 1, maybe 2 family reunions there a couple of weeks ago. They
all had matching, bright shirts which proclaimed the occasion. Made it easy
to spot each other in the crowd.

What's wrong with upstate New York? :-)

...bright colored matching shirts... just don't carry a flag! :-)

Good ideas so far. How about having a different group family event
each day, then on your own for the rest of the day?
Such as:
	One nice dinner all together
	One character breakfast all together
Picnic at the Fort Wilderness area or at a water park

And be sure to have someone do a good group portrait!

    RE: last

I love upstate NY! Just with the family scattered from coast to coast
and up and down the eastern seaboard it seemed like a plan! (Plus we
were planning on going to WDW in '97 anyway!) (I DO know you were
    kidding!)

Great ideas - we could have a picture of our grandparents on each of
    our shirts.

I like the idea of a special event each day too.

My sister will be here next week. If I can convince her of this then
we can work out some proposals to present to the rest of the family.
